there are a lot of cool things i really like about this site, but my most favorite thing might be the variety of musical styles. so many different people contributing their stuff on here and it feels like everyone has their own favorite genre and style, it almost never gets boring to listen to new (and old) entries.
additionally, themed battles (major and minor) which forces people to write stuff outside of their comfort zone.

i'm also interested in other peoples favorite botb-things! c:

(i know, there might be a thread about this topic already, but im too lazy to search for it.)

For me it's simply getting to hear lot of music, improving as an artist and always learning new stuff. Pretty straight-forward answer.

Personally, botb has given me a fresh perspective on my music again, I think it's really easy to get into the trap of just thinking that your music is absolutely amazing and just never letting yourself improve, if you've got no reference point. I felt like I was in that place before botb, where I thought that everything I made was great even though there was still a lot of room for improvement.

I haven't been making music for very long (on and off for about 1-2 years) but I think for the few months I've been on botb I've improved more than I did for the entirety of last year. This community is so lovely and supportive that I always keep coming back to make more stuff and taking part in more ohbs/majors <3

(sorry if I said more than one thing lol)

There's so many things I love about BotB, I could do a big write-up about what this site has personally done for me. I was thinking of doing that after Winter Chip XIV ended but forgot to get around to doing it...

But one thing I love about BotB is the variety of different formats to go for. It's a lot of fun to explore other tools with different restrictions in place, and those limits inspire me to get creative and find the best way to make x soundchip sound good. This site does a good job at encouraging exploration, especially with how the battles are organized.

But in all seriousness, aside of what others have already said, it's also the uniqueness. It's probably the most peculiar and most fun one among all vintage computer music and arts-centered places with specific charm to it

I'm not much of a butt person myself

oh, you mean botb? Well I think I can honestly say that my exposure to chiptune writing/FamiTracker has actually impacted on my writing for live instruments. The ability to have micro-control over every single note and waveform, and the amount of detail that you can therefore put into chiptunes, has led to me experimenting much more with mixing instruments/sounds, and I also now think a lot more about the small details and putting colour variation into every single note rather than just treating the whole melodic line as if it needs to be played the same way all the way through. The pieces I wrote in my second year of my masters degree would not have been the same at all if I hadn't been exposed to botb.

botb is a quite interesting case study for testing the actual tools and their features (specially the lack of them), and help improving them

the community is quite motivational (even when it doesn't seem like at first), making us curious about being more risky and experimental, and is quite surprising how far any of us can motivate back

scoring looks like coming from a random number generator, which is actually cool! :D

in the end we might get a quite great and interesting portfolio we had no idea we could make them at first, even when their average might sound totally crappy

Aw man, I have to pick one thing?

One of my favorite things would be all the different formats this site hosts

Because of how many there are to pick from, you're bound to find the ones that suit you the most, there's even plenty of non-music formats to persue if you wanted to

This site's also the only place that still makes music for some of the more obscure formats, which made me really appreciate them because of how unique they are

And because of how talented people are on the site, they put out some of the best music ever made for these formats

1. music! so much music! hours upon hours of bangers waiting for me to listen to with even more music being uploaded every day, not to mention the variety of music too.

2. gamification! having the tism, i have this habit of gamifying my life and botb does this almost flawlessly with badges, levels, classes and my chievo system (even though it's unofficial)!

My all-time favorite inspirational quote (attributable to game designer Mark Rosewater, but probably also other people) is "Restrictions breed creativity."

I love this site because it leans into that attitude in several different ways: time restrictions, through XHBs; chip and other format restrictions, forcing me to work with limited tools; and bitpacks, which can put any kind of additional layer of restrictions on top of these.

Maybe that's cheating, because I brought up 3 things, but what I appreciate is the thing they have in common: they are restrictions that breed creativity.

This place is jam-packed with great, inspiring music and art with a huge variety of styles to the point where it feels like you could never truly plumb the depths of what's here. And the gamification and constraints built into every aspect of the site really make for great "replay value." But my number one favorite thing? I think it's been mentioned a lot in this thread - the sense of community. Our artistic efforts, even among people with different skill levels, bring us together in a cool way. I feel a kinship with a lot of people around, even some people I haven't interacted with directly in chat or elsewhere. I'd agree with Jredd in saying it feels like home.

For sure has to be the variety of music. I don't really find anything like what I have here, elsewhere, without deep searching for niche results.

I should elaborate that I don't just mean the genres or formats, but the unique style and sound each BoBtr has. It's not something I can simply explain, but compared to the playlists littered around youtube, you just can't beat the quality of some songs, and especially not the ideas that spawned them.

It's hard for me to pinpoint one particular aspect that I love the most about BotB, since mine's all about how the site executes the idea of bringing songs to the user.

The UI and UX being not overly focused on pleasing to literally everyone on the planet, thus implicitly nudging the user to pay attention and requiring some degree of intelligence and persistence on their part. Even past the registration phase.

BotB also showcase a wide variety of entries, with no obvious distinction of what are the most desirable ones. It sounds counterintuitive at first, but it works in its favor for two reasons:

- We can't inherently agree on what constitutes the best song ever
- Overexposure of the "greatest" songs will make us more likely to (dis)miss on the more esoteric ones

As a result, most users who end up being involved in BotB would wind up forming a tighter-knit community, churning out many more interesting entries you'd otherwise have a much, MUCH tougher time finding elsewhere.

The community.
I'm nowhere near as active as people are here, and I'm crap at making music, but I peek into everyone's interactions and entries and I find it beautiful how people are talented, creative, easy to talk to, and overall so friendly. There are few places on the internet nowadays that are nice and pleasant as BotB, and that makes it much more special.

Obviously not my only favorite thing, but the site itself!

The way the site looks is an absolute vibe, that and the whole leveling deal where you earn experience for doing stuff (such as liking other people's tracks, making your own stuff, or leveling in certain stuff) makes community interaction even more encouraging!

That and the fact that you can make your own color scheme just adds to it!

Quite honestly shocked that I haven't checked this place out sooner!

Best thing for me has to be the constant little incentives to make music. OHBs get my creative juices goin real fast and the long format ones are a nice, slower paced place to really put effort into a tune. There's almost always a challenge to look at to get me going

Having been here for a few months now, I really appreciate the balance of support, but also competition? A lot of people said very nice things about my Winter Chip submissions, but in the same breath, I didn't get gifted really high scores because people want to be polite. It feels like a good line to walk where folks can share what they like about your work, but also (directly or indirectly) encourage you to keep striving for better!

music competitions on botb online helped to shape my confidence in music. i go back and see how & why i didn't win this or that battle, and i can improve my music from that open feedback.

it also helps me to stay creative so that i can have good samples and patches on hand for OHB and other similar battles.

I love the freedom and uniqueness in this sight. From the peoples personalities, their style of music, and the variety/design of thia site. This is one of the things that helped me realize how important it is to be yourself and find your niche. Truly greatful to have found this area 🥰🤝

My favorite thing about this site is listening to how people interpret the provided bitpacks. It's interesting to hear people's styles.

you know, i've never actually replied to this thread because i found the idea of picking One thing overwhelming. how do i even do that?

but i think the best answer i could give is the fact that it provides, holistically, this fertile creative ground that's earnest, unpretentious, welcoming; people can learn here, they can experiment and express themselves without pressure, and as long as the community continues to nurture that - which it quite broadly has since i've been here - it'll remain a powerful wellspring for people to draw from and create art.

that's the biggest reason i stick around. that means a lot to me.

I've already posted so consider this my 2nd thing but noteworthy to mention

I'm ten years into making stuff here (and 12 overall elsewhere) and yet I'm still learning about new stuff/formats that I haven't tried before. It's a testament to the variety and scope of creativity that is available to be encouraged about from a platform

One thing I absolutely adore about Battle of The Bits is that because it kinda got stuck in a older web feel and design that dates back to 2011/2012 (this current version at least), it sort of accidentally ended up becoming a participant of the indie and old web revival in a way.
Like, this website looks and feels so fucking oldskool, and we can still use our own animated profile pictures like it's 2005 without any paywalls nor arbitrary bullshit (other than levels limiting pfp size).
It honestly gives this website a much needed comfy aura and feeling that it would never have if it followed modern day conventional internet design trends.
I do not feel welcome at home when I open up a page full of flat design and "Alegria" fake people on it, but i feel fully at home when I see this website, it's very oldskool feel and quirks.
