Preston (he/him)
I mostly like to compose for the NES.

Currently I am working on my debut album... stay tuned, it will hopefully be out before next summer!

If you're ever near Flagstaff, Arizona, let me know and maybe we can meet up!

Do you have a favorite state flag? Mine is Maryland's.

@VirtualMan
Maryland's flag is pretty neat. I had to look them up but I kinda like Washington's; green is my favorite color.

strong metroidvania opinions:

- Super Metroid and Castlevania Symphony Of The Night used to be the genre-defining games, but now there is another - the genre is now a TRINITY and Hollow Knight is the third piece. It so overwhelming fulfilled the requirements of the genre *and* contributed to expanding it. Nothing else comes close to those three. It's basically the second coming of jesus.

- Nonlinear platformers are not metroidvanias! metroidvania requires that the same item / ability you use to get to a previously barred area also have traversal and combat applications. Even if it's something simple like a dash ability - you can dash across gaps, you can dash past traps, you can dash to dodge enemy attacks, etc. Each 'key' is also a movement / combat ability, it's never 'just' a case of "use silver key to open silver door."

- on a related note, areas that require future traversal abilities to unlock, should stick out to the player the first time they pass through - it doesn't have to be 100% explicit, but it does need to catch their attention, and maybe even prompt them to imagine what kind of future ability they *might* need to get through that area. The player should pick up a new ability, and then think OH now I can go back to THAT PLACE and get through!

- Thou Shalt Not Deny The Player The Chance To Save After A Boss Battle

- There is actually such a thing as too many fun different weapon types (see: shovel knight, and axiom verge, two games which I nonetheless love dearly) - 8 weapons is already almost too many. DOOM Eternal is *not* a metroidvania, but it gets this absolutely correct in my opinion - you should always know what weapon you need for the situation at hand, and it should never feel like a pain to haul it out and put it to good use.

- maybe more?

edit OH also instakill spikes / bottomless pits are a sin

Hey there! Nice to meet you. Idk how to reply your comment on my entry so I reply you here :)

For my entry, I use 1xLSDJ v.4.6.6 without any custom samples patched in it, just a basic LSDJ :)

Hi! Nice to meet another accordionist/chipper. I love to mix the accordion and Game Boy sounds; I do that frequently when I perform live. They actually blend really well. I'm going to have to properly record some songs that really take advantage of that.

And now I'll check out Detektivbyran! Thanks!

I love Wintergatan! I actually discovered them before Detektivbyran, but maybe like them a slight bit less for the sole reason of having less discography.

Re: Houston Tracker - I'd never even heard of a TI-82 producing sound before, but I'm not surprised to hear such a tracker exists!

(and honestly, that's probably the only good reason to buy a TI calculator nowadays)

Developing a tracker for something should be a new version of "can it run Doom". I want to be able to track on my microwave.
