The ModPlugin was originally developed in the mid-90s by Olivier Lapicque as a plugin for Internet browsers to listen to tracking files (such as .mod and .it files). From this plugin, he developed the ModPlug Player and the ModPlug Tracker. ModPlug Player can play a very wide variety of tracking files, and uses many different audio effects, such as graphic equalization, reverb, and Surround Sound. Although it is still available, the Player is not open-source nor is it being developed.

ModPlug Tracker became completely open-source in 2004, allowing the actual application to be developed and the code altered for the correction of long-standing bugs and the implementation of new features, such as the advanced use of VST plugins and alternate tunings. (source: OpenMPT wiki

Two camps on trackers exists; Impulse Tracker and the likes (producing .it modules) and Fast Tracker and the likes, including OpenMPT (producing .mod modules). It is possible you come across some strong hostility or favorism, so n00bs you're warned.

MODPlug/OpenMPT (Open ModdPlug Tracker) is a windows module tracker, supporting several modules:

To open and play there are even more. OpenMPT has its own native module type, the OpenMPT format (.mptm), can save midi files, export audio as .wav, and has other interesting features such as VST support.

Modplug has some quirks in its audio reproduction... so if you use it, expect to be harassed by other BotBrs for your n00bitude.

Not only that, it saves in their very own and INCOMPATIBLE .mod format making playback "shaky" and weird on standard players. So if you think this is a good tool to compose, let people know you use so that they find this tracker to play back or ignore you for being n00b xD

Always always use "compatability export" and don't do 64 channels or VSTs in your .mod, listen to your track in xmplay before submitting and you will probably be ok
