what brought you here?

there was a cool conversation in chat last night where people were talking about the sometimes convoluted ways that they landed on the site. i think a lot of people have different stories to tell, so let's hear em!

i'll start: i joined to participate in a weekly allgear series - i had never used trackers and didn't have a particular interest in doing so, but after just a couple months on the site i started digging in, and the rest is obviously history. i'd listened to music in this scene for years and years, particularly thanks to ubiktune, but it had never really crossed my mind as something i'd wind up doing myself... even after my college classmate (who has an old account here) gave me an LSDJ cart that i had no idea how to use.

Found this site on a YouTube upload, linked the song in the description. Initially, I created this account for downloading songs. But then, I started participating in OHBs. I did have some hiccups here and there but I had fun and never stopped since.

i cant believe this thread doesnt already exist somewhere??

in summer 2016, when i made my first original mpt-compositions and uploaded them to one of my yt channels, Robyn suggested to me that i shld check out battle of the bits.
i opened the page, was confused by the design, and left again.

in nov 2017, i wanted to get the source file of this entry (it was linked in the youtube upload of the song), and since botb required you to create an account to download source files, i created an account. i downloaded the file and left again.

in february 2018, robyn posted a track on her twitter (this one) and put the link to the botb entry page on there, too. so i ended up on the page AGAIN, remembered that i had an account, logged in and uploaded my first entry.

it still took me 3 months of sporadically checking the site to realize that OHBs existed and to make me fully addicted, but yea you can say that robyn is the person who rly got me into botb, while tex is the person who is actually responsible for my account creation date

So my history with botb is a bit interesting.
I knew of BOTB as far back as 2013, when i was 12 years old. I discovered the site through chiptune people along with albums like 2a03puritans which I used to listen a long time ago.
And i lurked in the site time to time, in fact i have a few downloads from BOTB dating back to 2018 on my computer.

However I didn't think of joining the community itself much later around 2022 when I already was learning how to compose myself. My exboyfriend told me to join BOTB again. I made this account on August 2022...... then i forgot about it xwx.

It wasn't until much later in early 2023 when Hanna Lee (who i miss the presence on this community a lot) encouraged to actually be active and submit something here. So i submitted my first entry during that year's Spring Tracks. I did okay for my first try i guess, but i was later told that BOTB is more about participating in the community rather than winning.

I met so many wonderful people here since more than a year ago, and I'm really grateful to be part of Battle of the Bits :3

on reddit, someone made a throwaway reference to this site. i looked around for a couple days and vibed with the site, and thought it seemed like a good excuse to try finishing music (after having tried and given up multiple time in the past couple of years), so i joined and figured i could try making some NES stuff.

a couple months later ive now made like 70 tracks, which is nice (although none of them are NES lol. ill get around it eventually i swear)

A while back I wanted to make a game with gb studio, which comes with its own version of hUGETracker. Researching it made me go down a rabbit hole of chiptune trackers, which eventually led me to furnace and all of its cool demo tracks. Wanting more chip, I went to the chiptune subreddit, which currently as of writing has a pinned post explaning that this site had changed it's domain from .org to .com, with a link to said new site.

Curious, I made an account and joined a few ohbs, and realized how fun this site is. What really made the deal for me though was relistening to a lot of those furnace demos and realizing they were made by fellow botbrs. The rest was history, really

Hopeless Romantic is one of my favorite songs of all time. Back when i was a n00b at music I wanted to see if there were source files for FoD's songs because i EAGERLY wanted to be like him lol, I found some and I specifically found Hopeless Romantic here! I thought the site looked fun and saved it in the back of my mind.
One time i was feeling particularly bored and demotivated and remembered this site was a thing, so I thought I might aswell give it a go, thus my first entries came to be

As an additional note, I joined the site on and off until Candy Tunes, from where i started joining battles much more frequently and yeah now im here lol

Around 2022, I learned about bytebeat through ZIKBAKGURI on Twitter. I was looking through demos on the greggman website and some of them seemed to come from this mysterious site called "battleofthebits.org".

Earlier, I discovered Bubblegum Octopus and after listening to the album Big Battles in April 2023, I learned that it's a compilation of various BotB tracks, which definitely piqued my interest! Although I was probably too overwhelmed to join at the time...

Finally, after submitting a track for last year's Christmasasaurus album, I learned that some of the other featured folks are also from here, which finally inspired me to join!

I've never been part of an online art community like this before, and I'm eternally grateful for it! So thank you ZIK and BgO! ^^

the chain of events that led me here is surprisingly long actually

i first started getting into chiptune (and music production in general) in june of 2020 when i picked up famitracker after listening to a FoD song, and for about three years i rolled with that, making songs that were mostly mediocre as i had little to no experience with music production

i think it was in mid-2023 when i found flde, and through his works, learned of furnace - though it wasn't until a few months later that i actually got my hands on the program and started messing with it

i went looking through the furnace demo modules and found a song from abstract 64, and it blew me away, so i tracked down his yt channel and followed his works for a few months before finally joining his discord server - and it was there that i first discovered botb

i created my account in march of 2024 to download a few entries (mostly from a64) and promptly forgot about it

then in july, i was watching the results stream of the famicom grandprix in vc with a few others in a64's server, and after watching dami land FIVE SEPARATE ENTRIES in the top 7, pixel and rstx decided to collab on their next entry specifically to combat this Menace, and they roped me into it as well

i was just recovering from a massive burnout, and i also had absolutely no experience with collaborative songwriting, so admittedly i didn't contribute as much as i would have liked, but i'm still proud of what i did, especially since it was my first entry

when i really got involved with the site was when i submitted an entry to spoopy eight last month; i hadn't written an original song by myself in over a year, and it felt really good to be back at it again

shortly after that i found an ohb that caught my eye - it was one of the battles in tex's ym2151 + segapcm series - and decided to give it a shot despite massively doubting that i would ever be able to make something passable in such a short timeframe

if you had told me a week prior that my first ohb entry was going to win bronze (let alone with a 10 point penalty), i'd have called you crazy

it was at that point i decided i was here to stay

considering everything i just said, i have three people to thank for my presence here:
  • Fearofdark - got me into chiptune and greatly inspired my songs
  • FΛDE - indirectly led me to discover furnace tracker, and through it, abstract 64
  • Abstract 64 - taught me how to fm, helped me recover from burnout, and led me here

and three other people to thank for helping me settle in:
  • pixelated & Roostersox - can't thank them enough for being willing to collab with Some Guy
  • Tex - i would not be nearly as active here were it not for that one ohb

there's like 20 other people i want to thank but this post is way too long already lmao

I first came upon it while searching for zabutom tracks back around 2008 but I had no idea what it was let alone how to make chiptunes
later on when I had started using famitracker I wanted to find a way to post tracks online. In 2011 8bc was dead by then but a spiritual successor ucollective was around. some really good tracks were on there that so happened to be entries that people had made for botb competitions and often the tracks would leave descriptions about what the majors were, and that's my introduction to the site proper.
It's funny to think back then, I only knew how to make nes and zxbeep stuff.

Back in 2000 I joined a site called GuitarWar.com with a couple troll entries (I was a kid lol), then shortly after joined ReasonStation.net and had a few DnB tracks that stayed in the top 10 on the charts (overall for a few days each, and in the "drum n bass" category for a few months). Years later joined RocBattle.com where I was lucky enough to make my way to the top 10 charts again from winning battles, and met a lot of cool people in that community. And after that I entered a few Talent House competitions that were kind of fun and extremely competitive.

So when I started getting into making Sega style music/chiptunes, I wanted to find a battle site for Sega Genesis tracks, and a quick googly search led me here. A site that immediately confused the fuck out of me, but quickly started to feel like home.

The best battle site and community I've been a part of. Thanks to everyone making it still awesome over the years.

So I've definitely known about BotB for a while - I got my start on SoundCloud when I was a teen, and the name showed up a few times.
The earliest example I can think of was Petet's Naiad's Lament, but I'm sure there were a few others before that.

Fast forward to earlier this year, and a few people from a Discord group I'm in recommended it (hi, Dami and Snuggly!).
I really liked the OHBs Dami hosted on Cohost, so the idea of doing more of them sounded really fun!

I'm not sure why I didn't sign up sooner. I think I was under the impression that BotB was an elite group of artists, and I wouldn't quite stack up.
But y'all have been really welcoming, and I'm excited to spend a lot more time here!

- I played Celeste, and when playing through the "B-side" levels (which are soundtracked by guest remixes of the original themes), I heard Maxo's remix of the first level theme
, and immediately thought "this is one of the greatest things I've ever heard".

- I sought out all of Maxo's other music, which included a contribution
to STAFFcirc vol. 3⇋
. STAFFcirc caught my attention, especially "Switched-On Kapustin" (as my brother had introduced me to Kapustin's etudes a few years before), so I started diving into their other compilations as well.

- As I started investigating the work of other STAFFcirc musicians on Soundcloud I saw Battle of the Bits mentioned repeatedly. Curious about getting involved with groups that were making music like STAFFcirc, I checked out the site, found the interface impenetrable, and bookmarked it, thinking "maybe I will come back here someday".

- Later, STAFFcirc put out an open call for track submissions on Soundcloud, which eventually became STAFFcirc vol. ω
, and I sent in a track for that. Shortly afterward, I also got involved with the Sample Pack Contest
-- these were both outlets for me in the depths of covid lockdown.

- Once I was in Discord servers with people from these collectives, I started hearing about Battle of the Bits and the concept of one-hour battles more regularly. At the time I was building my music-making confidence, but still working very slowly and infrequently, and I began to think "maybe I could use some practice making something in an hour". So, 2 years after I first started dipping a toe into this scene, I finally made an account here.

Think I talked about this but I had been doing modcompos on the modshrine IRC prior, which I found via the OpenMPT forums. When watching GST Channel
's music compilations of chiptune and some BotB tracks from past Summer and Winter chips were featured, so I thought "hmmm maybe I will try this! I kinda enjoyed music competition those couple times and they've stopped doing them there". I believe I had known about some other competitions existing but I didn't really have an idea of where to find them. If I hadn't seen Winter Chip running at that exact moment idk if I would've joined. probably would've brushed it off as not my thing

Beepbox Discord originally then I found myself listening to some chip music and noticed some are BotB submissions. I found it a bit intimidating for a while after my first submission in 2021 when there was a Jummbox Battle. Returned recently in October 2024. Now I am starting to branch out from Beepbox (I won't abandon it, I am also making a mod of Ultrabox because I want to make it better).

I do wish I found BotB far sooner, perhaps even stuck to it in 2021. I can't change the past though.

I think the first "modern" chiptune i ever heard was the Shovel Knight soundtrack, which i became completely obsessed with (still am) when i played the game in 2022. Then on March 4th, 2023, I found Famitracker when looking for a chiptune software to make music for my friend's video game (funnily enough I didn't even imagine that such a software existed). It was like a godsend; probably the most pivotal moment in recent years of my life. I finally began composing again after 4 years of lacking inspiration and being unable to find a musical medium I like.

After several months of learning Famitracker I stumbled across this video
on YouTube, in which puke7 mentions BotB at some point. I made an account but then got confused and scared off for a few weeks until I saw Battle of the Karts and couldn't resist entering.

I guess the interesting thing about my story is I didn't know anyone on BotB at the time of joining. The only chiptune I had heard was NES and Gameboy soundtracks, and Shovel Knight. Of course now I feel much more caught up with the chiptune scene, but it was a very cool experience joining as a complete outsider and learning about this awesome niche internet community.

as said @kleeder, this thread is cloned somewhere else indeed! xD
i arrived here 3 times:
- 2005 - an university friend said me that botb website was recently created, but i didn't create an account then (i'm not sure if he was @locks)
- 2014 - i was bored in the christmas and created an account (probably for downloading some .mod files? i'm not sure...)
- 2020 - @MrGamer reminded me in a retro-related facebook group about botb, and that i actually created an account here - he also promised some collabs, but nothing happened since then - and for some reason i started trying to submit some entries out of curiousity

long ass short:

I created a new Soundcloud account because my old one was getting stale. I was sorta done listening to dnb and various electronic genres (related to geometry dash and Rythm games).

fuck shit, i remember very wel the first tune i heard through sifting through artist and artist from my old account and i ended up with: Bolts by Lucas Ericson. I then just let it play(similar songs)(algorythm and shit) and fuck shit, i just found my new favorite genre and thus digital fusion was engrained in my head.

Fast Forward

through listening to various popular artist that posted their music on SoundCloud i was intrigued that they all had this similar style even though they seemingly seemed so unrelated to each other. i couldn't find where the music originally came from for quite some time but, after some time i found a song that mentioned BotB thus here we are now.

https://soundcloud.com/user-823497578-866525133/sets/bolt

GOD DAMMIT WE NEED TO PUT UP MORE LINKS SO PEOPLE CAN FIND BOTBBBBB!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got into chiptune music with DefleMask in 2019 (influenced by YouTube and video games). In 2023, I switched to using Furnace and other programs. Near the end of 2023, I had heard of Battle of the Bits by comments and descriptions of YouTube videos. I was fascinated by this web site after discovering it.

I wanted to make music for my games, and thought chiptune was a nice fit. I started to learn to make it in DAWs, and listened to a bunch of it on Soundcloud to get the style I wanted into my ear. I think BotB came up a few times in descriptions, but didn't think much of it since I was not interested in competitions.

At some point, I remembered the UFO 50 music teasers
showcased a tool that didn't look like a DAW, so I looked it up and learned about Deflemask
and then the history of trackers
through cTrix's channel (debuglive). I fell in love with the stories of people sharing homemade modules in the 90s. I had an amiga and a MS-DOS PC growing up, so it felt like a childhood I completely missed and I really wanted to experience it. I picked up Deflemask and Renoise, but ultimately didn't get them and fell back into DAWs because they seemed more powerful.

The next year, I stumbled upon a Jackerson track
and really liked it. It mentionned BotB in the description and, at that point, I had seen it a few times, so I knew that quite a few of the people I followed had participated there. I got curious and clicked on the link.

I ended up spending a lot of time on the lyceum, blown away by the quantity of formats, and how people were still making and sharing new modules to this day. I picked up a few formats, waited for a major I felt I could participate in, came up with a username and registered.

Now, I am participating in the tradition, living an experience I thought long gone...

I first discovered BotB through the works of HertzDevil, which put the existence of this site in my mind for a very long time.

Later down the line, around late 2019 to early 2020, I decided to look for advanced midi techniques and landed upon the MS-GS page on this site's lyceum.

Then fast forward to 2022, when I saw fusoxide upload something new to their SoundCloud and decided to read the description, which later led to me deciding to finally make an account here.

I could've joined earlier however I knew back then that my music skill was insanely lacking. Like, put two clashing notes in the bass region, muddying it kind of bad.

I wasn't even expecting that my skills would've developed any further, yet here I am, in the flesh and in the digits...

Technically speaking, HertzDevil was my intro to BotB, as several of their submissions to winter chip majors got charted for Clone Hero a few years back, and those charts were pretty popular for a time.

For me in specific though, my good friend Thingerthing would occasionally talk about this site, and back earlier this year in the summer I finally bit the bullet and decided to try it out.

Been doing allgear XHB's and majors ever since!

I really don't remember, it's almost as if I stumbled across this website one day and my whole world was rocked!
I had always been a real chiptune enthusiast before BotB, but I feel the website has strengthened my artistry in more ways than one! I might have also been drawn into the website due to recognizable artists from module archive websites. (modarchive, modules.pl)
Now that I'm thinking about it, at the time I wanted to find a source of masterful chiptunes beyond YouTube, and here lies the treasure trove.
I've basically been battling bits since I joined!

In a word, Super Famicompo. (wait, that's 2 words. Dang it!)

Being a member of SMWCentral since 2021 (which I joined purely to make SMW Music), I started participating in SFC each year, and quickly noticed some of the participants being from outside SMWC. Naturally, since BotB was name-dropped, I came to the site to see what it was, but at the time wasn't too interested and quite honestly had 0 idea what was going on with the UI or how to navigate or anything about the site, so I gave up trying to understand quick.

Fast-forward to 2024 where I guess I had slowly accrued a better knowledge of the site, and eventually looked deeper into it around the time SFC6 was starting up (as if 1 chiptune contest wasn't enough for me, haha). I especially took interest in damifortune's "YEA VIDEOGAME" series since it was SNES sample-based composition challenges, and when I check what the latest one was (#149), it was a Fire Emblem game of all things! (I like Fire Emblem if the pfp didn't give that away). Naturally I said "welp, I can't let a chance like that slip away from me again (not knowing dami's already done all 3 FE games for YEA VIDEOGAME lol) and signed up the day before my birthday to jump on the next battle, and the rest is history. (well, 5 months of history, at least, haha.)

A YouTube video of Velathnos' Super Anthropomorphic Space Turismo. I was looking for authentic SNES music, found the video, and ran into Battle of the Bits that way. It was the 11th SNES track ever submitted, going by my own track listings (the first one ever submitted was a Wildchip, presumably predating the entire format). My first track I ever submitted to the site was the 16th.

I think this is the entire sequence of events

* Watching Sonic X reruns on Saturday mornings (??-2014)
* Buying a Genesis at a garage sale (2015?).
* Became a fan of Genesis soundfont midislap and other similar offerings (2015?)
* Joined Sonic Retro (2015) and became interested in romhacking. The technical discussions there shaped my passion for understanding retro soundchips at a low level
* Found Rolf Bakke's C64 oscilloscope views, then acrouzet's (2016?)
* My growing understanding of the technical side of real hardware made me forsake midislap forever (2017?)
* Downloaded Deflemask and made my first song (2018)
* Joined the Deflemask Discord (2019?)
* Joined Chiptune Cafe at some point. Didn't stay long because I quickly got sick of people spamming #general with "pee" over and over (2019?)
* Started following ZorroTracker development, which eventually crashed and burned, and then someone posted a link to the Furnace Discord and I ended up there (2021)

Between Furnace and Chiptune Cafe, there were a lot of botbrs floating around. I found out about botb in 2020/2021, but didn't join right away (social anxiety/busy/etc.)

Then:

* Finally joined BotB, specifically for the Musical Jokes major, because I felt like I had come up with a decent entry (2022)

I think i arrived in the site for the first time around 2020 when i was listening all the songs of nu11 in youtube. I listened so many times Suppressed Feelings
but never noticed the links in the description of the video until a year later. When i clicked the link, I was soooo confused about everything and leaved inmediately.

Around 2021 revisited the site for reasons that i don't remember rn. I started to understand (just a little) some sections of the site, and i was thinking about creating an account, but in that time i wasn't creative enough to compose my own music and I've decided to leave again.

In 2024 revisited the site again because of a song that i found on soundcloud that was pretty catchy (I'll link the song here if i find it), and saw the link to the site again. After thinking for a while I've decided to create my account (because after all, what's the worst that can happen?). I'm so happy to finally be here in the site (despite that I'm not that active because I'm pretty lazy)
