Similar to mario paint.

Download link: http://www.mariomayhem.com/downloads/mario_paint_composer_download/index.php

Submissions could be in either .txt format, or .zip format (if a different soundfont from original is used).

Battles could have a specific soundfont to use, for example. I know that myself as well as a couple other botbrs (christerious, phazon, lob31 have all used it) have our roots as composers in this program, so I'm sure it could become a fairly popular format. (There is also interest from others who have not yet used the program).

Drawback: There is no direct export, so rendering to .mp3 could prove difficult (but still possible, some people such as myself have the equipment necessary for high quality recordings).

I actually downloaded this before, and it functions on my computer. I could technically record this using Wiretap Pro, although the program appears to be a Director MX file, and I may have some synching problems when playing the songs.

Actually, the program is discontinued according to the official website: http://www.unfungames.com/mariopaint/

can we also accept that japanese clone as listed somewhere in the lyceum

can we also accept savestates from every rom capable of music making

can we also accept each mml dialect as separate formats

can we also accept pretty much every piano roll editor format out there

can we just directly support stepmania files as a format

can we accept matlab scripts and mathematica files

i.e. just delete this and stfu and gtfo

This site is not dedicated for those "tools" that bear zero resemblence to chiptune, if you still want that then go host that YOURSELF at where you were 4-5 years ago with your worthless anth clutter

Where I was 4 or 5 years ago, was where I was because I had no experience as a composer yet. Mario Paint Composer is a viable format because it is straightforward, user-friendly, and hosting battles would take very little server-space, as the program saves songs as text files.

There is plenty of room for restrictions within the program, restricting tempos, dictating which instruments should be used, mandating volume control be exaggerated or ignored, etc.

I suggested this because RaphaelGoulart thought it could be fun. That is what this site is about, yes? MPC is a fun program. That is the reason for my suggestion.

Mario Paint Compose utilizes sharps and flats, and lets you have limitless notes per beat. This is a travesty. Y'all lucky rainwarrior made the extended feature for MarioPants. Besides, they discontinued dev on MPC
, what you want is Retroband.

Limitless? No, the limit is five notes per beat. But yes, accidentals are allowed.

i understand the idea of including mario paint composer, but it seems a bit too advanced to be included under the mario paint category. i mean you can include soundfonts, there's increased note count per beat, ridiculous tempo, and a more broad tonal scale, so including it under the botb mario paint format seems to be a bit of a stretch because at the end of the day, it's basically a soundfont composer. i personally like having mariopants as our go to for the format. with its emulation of the original mario paint music tool, it forces the musician to be more creative which is something i think should be focused on above anything else. we even utilize the extended bar count now, so i say we just stick to the pants!

The amount of notes is sorta limitless given you can just turn the speed all the way up to 11 and spam notes everywhere, but there's no sustain (at least with the default soundfont, ignoring the last 2 instruments), and with some select limitations (i.e no tempos beyond X, only the default soundfont) it would be fun. I am slightly biased given I used it a bunch a few years back, and it's understandable if people don't want it to be added, though I was under the impression that there weren't really many restrictions to what formats could be added to this site... just depends on interest. Though really, MarioPants is sufficient for me.

tothejazz, what we're suggesting is a separate format for MPC (since we all acknowledge it's not actual mario paint, but a different tool based on it)
i dont think that it being "a "tool" that bear zero resemblence to chiptune" is a valid issue since this website is not ENTIRELY dedicated to chiptune (you can take any of the several recent allgear majors such as usability, Metal II, Detroit IX, etc. as examples), and we even have the wildchip format on which "fakebit" stuff is accepted, besides other formats that aren't chip specific (such as our beloved s3xmodit) - so why not? thats just my opinion anyway
and if this end up not being implemented, well, we can always host allgear ohcs on which the bitpack says you must use mpc or whatever, but idk, like lil anth said, i suggested it because it might be fun and THAT's the real purpose of the website, isn't it? imo its not a bad idea c:

Edit: I'VE MADE A THREAD FOR THIS
I am going to revive this thread because I think this could be worth revisiting 10+ years later, considering the tool itself that was suggested is probably considered retro in the same way NES and whatnot were during that time.

Before I used FamiTracker, I was dicking around with Mario Paint Composer and have made some songs that I didn't get to upload or even archive because I was like 8 or 9 and that wasn't really a consideration I had.

I think this format could very well serve a similar purpose to what nsf+ is to regular nsf - a greatly extended and more feature rich take on Mario Paint's composer thing. It adds accidentals, a couple of extra sounds, an arranger that works similarly to OpenMPT's pattern system, wildly increased speed ranges (usually referred to as "dickspeed") and note volume.

As for soundfont features, I actually want to vote against using any external soundfonts for such a format. The only accepted one should be the one such a tool comes with, however, speaking of tools here for a second, I wouldn't recommend Mario Paint Composer. It is no longer available and not maintained. I believe Super Mario Paint is its successor, which has a GitHub page here: https://github.com/DC37/Super-Mario-Paint

It adds even more features, even more sounds, and runs via Java meaning it is available cross-platform and is still maintained, free and open source. It also has a manual, although obviously our own lyceum will cover the basics too.

I realise that the community at the time really didn't want an extra format for this, including puke7, but I did genuinely want to bring it up again and wager whether community perspective has shifted into genuinely wanting this as a format, as I think it'd fit in today when we also have formats like moai and whatnot.

Would love to hear everyone else's thoughts on this, really.

I checked out Super Mario Paint a few months ago and thought it was pretty cool, I would support it being a format!

You might want to start a new thread for the format request since it's a different tool though
