A cover chain is a phenomenon, where a cover submitted to a previous Decadent Decade battle (or one of the few Cover XHBs or Advent Calendar cover days) is covered again in a Decadent Decade battle later.

Cover chains can theoretically keep going for several decades if done correctly. This can lead to slow changes of the entry if every new iteration adds their own touches to it.

Let's start with the most important part: Creating covers on Botb.
This is usually not allowed, since entries require you to submit original stuff. But there are rare exceptions. Let's look at the ones until 2025:

The first Decadent Decade was running from 2015-2016, allowing people to cover entries submitted between 2005 and 2015.
There were a few Cover XHBs mostly held in 2020 before they were declared illegal practice. But the entries from those battles remain.
There was a cover day as part of the BotB Advent Calendar 2024.

Therefore we do have some covers of BotB entries on the website. All of the examples were submitted between 2015 and 2025, which is in fact within the coverable range of entries for the second Decadent Decade, running from 2025 to 2026. This allows for covers not only of the original entries from this time period but also of the cover submissions.

And that's it. As soon as you cover an entry which was already a cover of an entry, you created a cover chain.

If the think this further, it means that you can cover those cover chain entries again in Decadent Decade 3, and cover chains from DD3 again in Decadent Decade 4 and so on... Of course, as I'm writing this, these battles are literally decades into the future and who knows if we will still create music on this website by then. But the possibility remains, giving us the opportunity to cover entries even from the first decade still by using the cover chain loophole. But an important thing to note: If a cover chain is abandoned, it can never be restored unless a future battle allows for covering ALL entries, and not just the ones from the previous decade. Be careful!
