Thread title says it all. What is the cringiest thing that has happened to you because of chiptune? (Do not confess to crimes, I don't want to hear how you robbed a bank while listening to unreal superhero).

I'll go ahead and get us started. Today, I came in to work at 8:00 tired as usual (twas a Monday after all). Anyways, I had brought my cassette player but was currently listening to "the worst video game OSTs of all time" on YT to cheer myself up for the day ahead.

Normally, my boss is working from home on Mondays, but he was in today. As I was listening to this absolute garbage

I hear his footsteps approaching. I didn't have enough time to turn off the cellular device. So he comes in and sees my cassette player and starts talking all nostalgic like about the good old days when tapes were all he had and whatnot. Meanwhile, I'm just trying not to laugh at loud with the absolute cacophony that is currently blasting in my eardrums. Eventually, I couldn't take it any more and had to reach for my phone and turn it off while he was there. I would not wish this situation on my worst enemy.

I used to post Beepbox/FamiTracker stuff to SoundCloud years ago, and someone big liked one of my songs when I was first starting out so then I got embarrassed and deleted everything, including the project files. Save for a handful of wavs, all of my very early stuff is completely gone.

so like in 2013/14 i found hertzdevil's megazun videos and thusly found out about famitracker. i was like "wow lemme try this, im hyped, can't wait to sound awesome just like this rando on youtube" so i tried to make a cover of nuclear fusion

from touhou and uhhhh it was BAD bad, even if it was my first experience with doing music at all i had no sympathy for myself. i purged that shit from my computer immediately and deleted fami... until almost a decade later when i joined botb and reinstalled it on my fancy new laptop. lol

i once started a chiptune group at my school that met during lunch. the only people who joined were two of my friends and some random kids who were big undertale fans who seemed to hate showering and social interaction and assumed we were using a daw or something. i broke out furnace or something and a ton of them left. we only had like one meeting and that was it

once caught in public not hyper aggressively repping chiptune,, every time i think of that day i die a little more.

The first ever original chiptune song I wrote in FamiTracker 12 years ago... I was so inspired by Shovel Knight that when I heard the OST was made with FamiTracker it got me to start learning it again.

I was so proud of myself that I sent the .ftm to Jake Kaufman's professional email thanking him for inspiring me to make what was essentially a ripoff of the Black Knight theme. never got a response though.

There is now a part 2 to my woeful tale.

So... on Monday, after my shift, I lost my wallet at work when I went to go to the gym. Naturally, I've spent the last 2 days worried sick about it. I emailed housekeeping, habitually checked my bank account, the whole shebang.

Today, around 3:30, I found my wallet inside my office chair, in the crevice where the back of the chair meets the seat (it was really far in there). I DMed my boss on MS teams about the silly situation and got back to work.

As if I hadn't learned my lesson from last time, I put on that same stupid Genesis spiderman song to try and keep the silly energy going. Then, my boss came into my cubicle to look at where I had left my wallet for giggles. Instinctively, I popped out an earbud but I lost grip of it and it rolled all over the ground. This is now the SECOND TIME my boss has caught me off guard to that STUPID SONG. It's basically his theme song at this point.

I burned a CDs with Kitsune² songs and played it on the car sound system. My mother was very perplexed at the music.

i started making music in middle school. around 2016-17, I got into beepbox. I'm talkin OLD beepbox, before FM was added. I was there for that shit. I cut my teeth on that shit. i hardly use it anymore though

i used to share my old pre-botb music with my entire class. before class started, the teacher would sometimes allow me to subject everyone to such torture. eventually I got better at music, so it was no longer a torture device, but my reputation was always an overexcited bleep bloop musician throughout the end of middle school and early into high school. In high school I started doing modshrine compos a bit, but I ended up givig up on it a year or so before I joined botb.

but something good did come out of it. my sister is friends with many of my old high school classmates since we're only a year apart. one of these friends actually was super inspired by me and made some actually damn good music after trying it themselves, but eventually i stopped sharing my music before class eventually so they sort of gave up. i think that's neat. i hope he listens to my first album if i ever finish it, though his excitement for my music is a bit... much for my socially awkward ass LOL

guhh i used to make "chiptune" with lmms (literally just raw tripleoscilators) and SOMEHOW one of them ended up as my most popular video on my yt channel. made an entire new channel and heavily restricted what i upload there so that wouldnt happen again

As an 11yo i used to play chiptunes on the car radio during family trips, they shortly got interrupted after the start due to nobody else tolerating them haha

Back in high school I played around with Famitracker and made a few songs I was pretty proud of, but they weren't very good. I didn't use the effects column at all, or any instrument macros besides simple volume envelopes. For some reason I refused to learn anything else about the format or use any expansion chips or try any other trackers. I didn't really listen to other chiptune (besides a few game OSTs) and I certainly never looked at anyone else's modules. I shared a song I thought was pretty good on the Famitracker forums, and got one reply with some nice constructive criticism that I didn't really understand and I never replied for clarification.

I would then continue to dabble in making little Famitracker ditties once in a while without really bothering to learn anything deeper than the very basics of note placement. A little later I'd use Famitracker to make a walk-on theme for my band and some bgm for random YouTube videos I made.

Then in 2013 my coworker started talking about how he was making a game, so I made a sample song and he liked it so he offered me a paid gig. The project never went anywhere and I got so bummed I didn't touch any chiptune for over 10 years. I even found this site back then and wanted to battle but I didn't understand it and didn't want to learn I guess. The lost time haunts me!

my old famitracker music was still before the era when i learnt what scales are so it was mostly bullshit and a few covers with sunsoft bass but it also had absolutely ATROCIOUS triangle kicks bro you do not need that C-6 with 266

also it took embarrassingly long to realize why my n163 could only handle 1 wave at a time and it was because of a position setting that was right infront of me but never thought to check

My cringe confession? Well, let's say I discovered "chipthrash" a few years after the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak...and it turned out there hasn't been many new artists since 2018 or so.

Nevertheless, I was inspired by its thrash-metal-like heaviness...and kinda made some of my own. What can I say? I love punky metal tbh.

My second entry is the most embarrassing thing I've ever composed and I hate it, but no more than my old Mario Party covers at least all of them are gone now because i lost them while formatting my device

I feel like an idiot regarding formats. The closest thing to art I make is usually crappy collages saved into a JPG format. Same for photos as well.

One thing for sure, I should draw my own stuff more often...as well take more photos.

Regarding chiptune cringe however, I do confess that I did not learn how to organize my LSDJ/M8 project in a certain way until recently. Most of my peers start at 00 for blank chains and whatnot. I remember using 7F in some of my early LSDJ project. I also don't know how to do live performance using LSDJ.

In fact, when I showcase my chiptunes on any stage, I just hit play, say cringy emcee-type hype lines, and just dance around. That actually happens when play LSDJ tunes at some open-mic venues and even when I'm in an actual lineup.

My actual confession, simply put, is that I don't know how to use live mode on LSDJ and I still don't know how to use it properly. I just compose and play in song mode nowadays. I do apologize for the long ramble. I just had to render a PNG out of a JPG image today just to enter a battle with some art. lmao

another confession, something i'd rather not talk about now since i am a proper chiptuner, and something that would probably draw the ire of every single person on this site.

Back in 5th grade, I was interested in video game music. I listened to what i could of old nintendo games on spotify. however, listening to the same old mario music was boring, and i wanted to listen to more
at that time, AI was a novelty. everyone in my class was fooling around with suno ai, and i joined in and gave the ai prompts to create chiptune.
yes, this is very embarrasing. yes, most of the things the ai put out were shit. yes, i regret doing this.

One of the cringiest things for me is the demo i submitted to become part of STAFFcirc and lilypad... apparently it was good enough at the time, but looking back, it's gotta be one of the goofiest and poorly mixed songs i've ever made and I'm shocked it even got recognized

Anyways back on like, my second time submitting an OHB here, I used furnace tracker for a .xm file, not knowing it couldn't export .mod/.xm/.it files... so i lost the battle by not being able to submit any thing. i'm still proud of the entry regardless...
