Considering 71.523% of entries are late, it would be a nice feature for those who don't queue up the submit page in advance in order to avoid having to frantically navigate the site in the final seconds. Might want to cut it off after some period though or you'll see -1357128 point scores.

submitting late is part of the BotB Culture, but here's an idea
maybe if you submit late you have a 10% chance of your entry becoming "dis is the beep", the legendary song that changed zx beeper music forever

but of course taking someone else's song would be wrong so you'd be voted down! see you guys should just make me owner of the site i know what's up

The score penalty is fine in concept, but perhaps it could initate after a certain amount of time. Nobody wants to see a person entering a compo 20 minutes after it's voting time with no repercussions. No, maybe there's a 5 minute period after the compo ending that you could enter/resubmit safely in. (because yes, you're rushing and you upload the wrong thing, or made a mistake in your export), After that spare 5 minutes, the penalty would then kick in. That's the most logical way to go about the concept of score penalty, and keeping the late submitting parties satisfied.

Or you could take my previous idea and integrate it into the site as planned.

Wouldn't that in effect just be the same as increasing the compo time from 60 minutes to 65 minutes?

Altering how the score penalty works wouldn't make any sense, IMO, since as-is it's the thing that makes an OHB an OHB; mucking with it would remove the incentive to actually finish+submit in an hour. I know I'd use all 65 minutes as "normal" compo time if they were there. :P

I think the system's totally fine how it is now (allowing late submits in general is a great thing since it prevents critical fuggups), 'cept I do agree with the addition of a 'Late Submit' button.

5 minutes is a lot of time too. I could sympathise with a 1 minute or 30s cut-off time maybe though - internet connectivity problems can be a cruel thing sometimes, or saving problems or unfortunate circumstances triggered by the gods of fate. But yeah, I'm of the belief that ohc's should be as close to ohc's as they can be, and a penalty is.. well.. the cost of time. It's all fun anyway :P

On the topic of the original post, I am in favour of a late-submit button though. Softens the blow for people who are unfamiliar with the workings of botb (and myself because I always forget the link anyway).

What about a penalty points live counter, on the button or on the late submit page? That would espacially be interesting for Moot, who use to hand in his entries like 15 minutes late (haha)

Yeah, the rigours of the 6-in-60 used to push me waaaaay past the limit. I'm just too ambitious a lot of times!
Sometimes there really are legit reasons for not being on time, as FoD mentioned and others - sometimes internet/computer problems/rendering issues.
Our friend SketchMan3 certainly has had those issues a lot of times...
May as well take some of the pain away by adding a late submit button.

I have been making a serious effort to be on time lately! It really is the ideal thing, I think that goes without saying.

I'd actually like the extra cutoff time. 2 or 3 minutes, maybe even 5, after the 60 mark to submit, and afterwards the submission form is closed.

That way, there's precious extra seconds to submit and whatnot for those shitty Internet situations, and the sub form getting closed afterwards means no ridiculous 15-minutes-late stuff. It's a way to keep the time limit enforced, but to be kind and friendly towards the competitors at the same time.

That's another good way to go about it. The problem is if someone is actually over the submitting time, has an entry to submit, but it's closed, that'd be kinda sad for the guy who was a bit too late. It's a rough way to go about it. At the same time, I hate seeing 15 minute late stuff, egh.

imo the current system is fine, an ohc is an ohc, 60 minutes, no more than that. i doubt puke's gonna change that, and in my opinion the amount of points lost for uploading a short time late is, most of the times, irrelevant (yes there have been times that people lost ohbs because of a few secs, but i dont think its necessary to change how the penalty system works only because of these few cases).
i'm all up for the 'late submit' button tho, it'll help ppl like me who forgets the 'trick' (even though its basic) a lot.

Okayhere'stheplan.

One minute late: there is one late submit button.

Two minutes late: there are now two late submit buttons. One of them works. The other one brings you to kittenwar.com.

Three minutes late: there are now three late submit buttons. One of them works, one of them is kittenwar, and the third one takes you to this video: /watch?v=XdofmoYcJNE

Four minutes late: none of the buttons actually work.

Five minutes late: Two of them work, but you have to be really quick about clicking one of the correct ones, or else the buttons disappear.

Basically, the later you submit, the more difficult it will become to actually submit.

This is in no way a serious suggestion, please ignore me, I'm being silly and impetuous.

i still think the late submit button is a good idea
and the penalty counter somewhere that someone mentioned here so ppl will know how many points they are losing for submitting late
maybe even a 30 sec / 1 min extra time for those who have bad internet connections or other problems considering but as i stated in my other comment i dont think thats very relevant

get the hint?

make the late submission penalty log-linear w.r.t. time (or quadratic) so that the penalty remains quite small for the first 3 minutes or so but grows faster onward

you cannot make that penalty stepwise constant and you cannot probe how bad the botbrs' internet connectivity is

what about

penalty = -0.22*minslate^2

the penalty is only -0.22 points off for a minute late (which isn't too bad for ur2slow internet and most differences in scores between entries by this much are usually caused by things like INF anyway) but around 5 mins that goes to about -5.5 points penalty and then say if you are like 10 minutes late then you get a -22 point penalty!

if you are an hour late you get a -792 point penalty! wow!
