So this topic is actually one of my personal bugbears.

I used to buy into the whole "drink 8 glasses of water a day" thing and would dutifully bring a big bottle of water everywhere and chug it all the time. Especially since I used to live in Colorado where everyone tells you to "stay hydrated!" because of the altitude. Eventually I started noticing my mouth was feeling dry and I was getting headaches. I thought maybe I was dehydrated and started drinking even more water to compensate, but it just got worse.

Finally, only after many months, I happened to read online about somebody with the same problem, who realized they were actually overhydrating. Symptoms of which include... dry mouth and headaches. Sure enough, after I cut down on my water intake, the headaches and dry mouth went away.

Now I don't hydrate up to any particular target, I just drink when I'm thirsty.

The latest research indicates that people only really need 1.5-1.8L of water. It also depends on many factors like your age, weight, diet, how much you exercise, etc.

So my advice to everyone would be: listen to your body and do what's right for you.

(It's probably also a good idea to replace sugary drinks with water, but that's kind of a separate topic!)

tagging onto what agargara said, when you pee & sweat you lose not just water but electrolytes like sodium and potassium. if you rehydrate with water but not these electrolytes you are likely to find you won't feel much better - waterheads make this mistake all the time. this is why medical rehydration fluid is not just pure water but a saline solution, and sports drinks contain salt and electrolytes.

next time you've worked up a thirst and no amount of water seems to be helping, try pairing it with a salty snack. i bet you'll be amazed at how much better you feel.

I'm actually so glad that this is a thread. I've had troubles with staying hydrated since like ten years old. Oddly enough, I just get so engrossed in what I'm doing and completely forget to drink, or don't even care to. But when I do lock in and drink throughout the day, my stomach just hurts from drinking too much and doesn't leave me room for food.

I started setting 30-minute timers on my phone and drinking like a quarter cup each time (like just those red plastic cups). I would say I now drink six to seven cups a day, so that's going good.

I usually drink at least two water bottles per day. how much does it hold, 32oz maybe?

So maybe I'm drinking about half a gallon a day?

i usually have a big cup of tea with breakfast and 2+ more cups of tea with lunch or through the afternoon, then go water bottle mode the rest of the day. yesterday i had a lot more tea because i made some for a friend and we also got tea at a restaurant! i love tea!!! but i am forever and amen drinking a large enough quantity of tea or water (or occasionally coffee) that i have to piss a million billion times throughout the day, so i guess there's a trade-off.

@agargara, you are right to bring up that point about overhydration! a well needed warning for this kind of thread

for my personal experience, if i am using the computer all day, i tend to ignore my body’s signals. it’s become a habit now, so in my case i DO actually have the opposite problem of underhydration

in my case if i don’t pay attention to my water intake, i get a lot of dandruff and feel very lackadaisical

in general people who use the computer often should make sure they aren’t neglecting the sack of meat they exist in!

perhaps the ideal way to measure your ideal personal water intake is to go on a long hike and see how much water you drink! then maybe make your daily target 50-75% of that (to account for the fact that you are probably not doing long hikes everyday). i am definitely promoting ADEQUATE hydration, and i think it’s very easy to forget if you spend most of your time doing focused, sedentary work

probably another sign of over hydration is if you’re constantly going to the bathroom and your urine is just completely clear. if it has a very faint yellow tinge it’s probably fine. if it’s like bright yellow or completely orange then you need to drink more water (ironically i tend to fall in the latter camp…)

@roz also great point about electrolytes, i forgot about those recently. i used to add some lemon juice and himalayan salt to my water. i might need to start doing that again.

when i wanted a super electrolyte boost, say after a long bike ride or mowing the lawn, i would drink a glass of very salty lemon water
