LunarMagic is a romhacking tool for Super Mario World, which lets you create your own levels and more for Nintendo's Jump'n'Run-Classic from 1992.

Tools

You should get LunarMagic
, which will be your main tool to build levels and change the overworld etc.
Next, you need a SMW-Romfile (which will not get linked here, but i'm sure u can do googling). Use a US ROM!
A SNES-Emulator is also handy for testing your modifications and playing back other submissions.

There are some helpful tips over at SMW Central. Check out their FAQ at https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=faq&page=1219827-level-editing

General Rule for the format

- all custom elements like new sprites, music etc. shld be made within the batol time
- no covers allowed, no leveldesign-covers, no music-covers within ur hack

Restrictions on submit

DO NOT UPLOAD YOUR .smc OR .sfc FILE (AKA: NOT THE ROMFILE OF THE GAME!) THIS IS ILLEGAL! You MUST submit a .bps or .ips patch!!!
Use the tool FLIPS
to create a patch of your hack and submit the resulting .ips or .bps file.
.bps is preferred.

You can also use File->Restore->Create IPS file inside lunar magic to create a patch.
EITHER WAY, YOU MUST do FILE-SAVE LEVEL TO ROM FOR YOUR CHANGES TO WORK.

Playback (for voting)

For playing back submitted entries, use FLIPS (see above) to patch the entry with a real US region SMW-Rom and run the resulting file either in an emulator of your choice or on real hardware.
If you have trouble playing a patch (such as a black screen), try adding a header to your original Super Mario World ROM. Lunar Magic will ask to do this if you open up an un-headered SMW ROM file. This should only be an issue with .ips files, as the .bps format mitigates this issue.
An unheadered file will show up as exactly 524288 bytes, while one with a header will show up as 524800 bytes.
