this is not a hill im willing to fully commit or die on, but an idea i genuinely think could be cool.
i always tough midi formats (MSGS, sc55, mt32, XG) sat awkwardly in the chipist class, they don't really feel like chipist but also would be hard to qualify as mixist. i believe there also exists a particular affinity for MIDIs, as in, they are something which attracts specialists and afficionados. i think it'd be fun and it also takes a bit off the already massive chipist class which encompasses a lot of the site's formats, making it kind of samey. a MIDIst class would introduce a bit more spice and also give those same afficionados a cool looking icon to be proud of. i sure as hell would love to have that

ive also seen the discussion in regards to subclasses. i dont really have much to add on that regard other than i think it sounds kind of fun and awesome, i haven't seen a full fledged proposal but i would like to spark discussion on it.

if there's a sequencist class, shouldn't more daws or midi things become formats?

if we get Sequencist class we could also make mariopants and moai into Sequencist formats. and other such formats where the main draw is sequencing fixed sound patches

I'm definitely on board with a Sequencist class over just a MIDIst class, following cyclar2's definition of "sequencing fixed sound patches". The various MIDI formats never felt very Chipist to me, and there are also some Mixist formats that don't really fit under "sample-based music".

With that definition in mind, I agree with djtakataka: famistudio, jummbox and pxtone should definitely not become Sequencist formats. Maybe mariopaint should also stay Chipist, since it adheres pretty strictly to the SNES game's limitations, but that could go either way in my opinion.

I would like to raise the following formats for Sequencist, that haven't been mentioned yet:
• klangfreude - Not only does this not use samples; it doesn't even have other waveforms beyond sines!
• musescore - It has lots of available sounds, but not custom ones. (Excluding VSTs and soundfonts, but those aren't BotB-legal anyway)
• panda - Only has 8 unchangeable instruments!

(That being said, I'm not familiar with klangfreude or panda, and trackers might not be particularly fitting for the class, so take those with a grain of salt.)

Together with mariopantse, midi, moai, mt32, orgmaker, sc55 and xg, I think Sequencist would make for a very interesting class. If it gets added, I'll try my worst do my best to become one!
