jesus!! 1 MONTH already. i have been doing... OK in school. i definitely need to pick up some slack, but it's not terrible, all things considered; especially given i'm finally in the New Room Downstairs. :) the moving process took a couple weeks to get sorted, so i wasn't able to focus on my studies much, but i plan to get back to it with better focus now

i still have free time, just not enough energy for botb. however, i do have enough energy for vidya games. i'm in the mood to play indies, any recs? i personally want people to play the mindwave demo because i just discovered it and it's awesome, that's MY rec

Hypnospace Outlaw, a wonderfully charming old web inspired story simulation game and probably my favorite game of all time

If you end up liking it, also check out Slayers X (a fun boomer shooter spinoff that I eventually learned BOTB’s own BubblegumOctopus composed for) and wishlist the upcoming sequel, Dreamsettler!

i second UFO50, especially if you like retro style games. insanely consistent quality across so many different genres. i got 50 hours on it and i've only beaten like 18-20 games lol. not to mention you can make decent progress in many of them without spending too much time in them, if you ever end up strapped for time.

other things i've loved recently:

Anodyne 2, Sephonie - i went through the whole Analgesic Productions and these are the games that stuck out to me. great exploration, interesting ideas for platforming in both (especially Sephonie, although it can be janky), and some pretty entertaining stories.

Slay the Princess- more a visual novel than a game, but the crazy amount of choices it gives make it feel like a proper game. excellent writing, lovely horror, beautiful art, the sorta thing that's easy to get obsessed with.

i do think UFO50 is the best value though, and i'd up it above Anodyne 2/Sephonie in terms of enjoyment (Slay the Princess is equal tho and fully worth it, but technically speaking UFO50 is like the best game related purchase ive made in a long time)

Balatro or vampire Survivors have managed to consume hours of my time like crazy (I played like 10 hours of Balatro today).

A few other Indies I can recommend are Shovel Knight Dig and Cave Story.

Now some I used to play on my PS Vita and should be on PC were: Risk Of Rain, Deadbolt, Titan Souls, Papers Please, Iconoclast, FEZ.

Oh shit I almost forgot TUNIC, you gotta play TUNIC, it is such a gem

Your Only Move Is Hustle. It's a turn based fighting game. TURN BASED FIGHTING GAME.

You can buy the steam version that has an actual community if you have cash, or I can whoop you in the free itch.io release that only 12 year olds and broke Brazilians play. Just rattle my profile anytime and I'll wombo combo you at a moment's notice

Seconding / thirding some of the above:

- Slay the Spire
- FTL
- FEZ
- TUNIC (a serious contender for my favorite game ever -- great music, great visuals, great boss fights, great puzzles, and a lot of elegant design based on hiding secrets in plain sight)
- The Witness (another serious contender for my favorite game ever -- somewhat polarizing, but if you like first-person logic puzzles it's the cream of the crop)

Others:

- Whenever Slay the Spire comes up I also feel the urge to mention the hipster alternative, Dream Quest -- the actual first roguelike deckbuilder, which came out 3 years earlier, and which I think is just as good. It has the highest ratio of gameplay quality to graphical polish I've ever seen (as all the illustrations were done by the developer's kids).

- The developers of FTL went on to make Into the Breach, which I might like even better. It's presented as a turn-based tactics game, but it's more like a procedurally generated puzzle game. Combats are very short on small boards, and you know what each enemy will do the turn before they do it, so you can try moving them around so they fall into traps or hit each other.

- Something FEZ, TUNIC, and The Witness have in common (and one of my favorite things in a game) is that figuring out the rules of the game is part of the game, making the whole thing feel like one big puzzle rather than a collection of small ones. Another game that captures that feeling is Cultist Simulator. The game takes place entirely through moving around cards on a virtual table which represent various aspects of your life. If you play your cards right, you can form a cult and start working with eldritch forces, but the game is deliberately cryptic about how you get there, making for a neat experience of stumbling across secrets through trial and error.

if you like metroidvania games, and you like roguelikes, then i recommend A Robot Named Fight

it's like if super metroid crossed with doom and was also a roguelike

it was also developed pretty much entirely by one guy - doesn't get much more indie than that

i don't think i have EVER heard someone else talk about that game who didn't hear about it through me, it is tragically underrated

also the risk of rain games are amazing and everyone who suggested that is incredibly based; ror2 might just be one of my favorite games of all time

My personal top picks off the top of my head:

- UFO 50: Variety pack of 50 games reminiscent of old arcade and 8-bit console games. Most of them are pick up and play. There's bound to be something that tickles your fancy in there.

- Hades: Top notch hack-n-slash rougelike with a fun Greek mythology theme. Presents itself well with nice visuals and some storytelling elements. It also offers a lot of playstyle options with different weapons and builds if you like experimenting. Highly recommend if you're into fast paced action and rougelikes.

- Celeste: THE quintessential pixel style challenge 2D platformer. The platforming is very tight and well tuned. Music is great as well.

- Robo Quest: Fast paced FPS rougelike reminiscent of the modern Doom games, where you navigate and shoot your way through rooms of mobs and bosses. Very much a "flow" type of game. You can also play co-op!

Honorable mentions:

- Neon White: Very neat FPS puzzle about speedrunning. The story and presentation leans into anime tropeyness which may or may not be a detractor. Lots of figuring out the optimal route and executing on it if you're into that.

- Braid: 2D platforming puzzle game with time control elements. Lots of clever stuff here. Also, Soulja Boy
.

- Pseudoregalia: Short but interesting N64-esque 3D platformer. It's a metroidvania with backtracking and upgrades that open up your movement abilities.

The Witness - great puzzle game, but also quite pretentious. Don't go in expecting a gradually-unfolding mystery like The Talos Principle, or rewards beyond the journey itself.

Gorogoa - a very short and quite easy puzzle game, but also quite possibly the prettiest video game ever.

TIS-100 and Shenzhen I/O from Zachtronics - those are pretty hardcore, for people who want to hone their assembly programming/engineering skills. (For a similar but more educational challenge, try Nandgame.)

Oquonie - an alien-language puzzle game from the team that made the Orca livecoding sequencer and Pilot synth. If you like this sort of stuff, try also the Flash game Tork.

Samorost trilogy and Machinarium - short but very stylish adventure games from Amanita Design.

Night in the Woods - charming walking simulator about friendship, mental illness and the decline of the Rust Belt. It also has mystery horror elements, but this the game's weakest aspect IMO.

Dang. No indie fighting game players. I find it really weird how little overlap the chiptune community has with the FGC, seeing as most big name fighting game franchises started in the 16-bit / 32-bit era and are often praised for their music.

Looks like I gotta build this bridge myself then. Grab an arcade stick or remember what a D-pad is (that little plus sign on your controller) and play these indie fighters:

- your only move is hustle (you actually only need a mouse for this one XD, highly recommend)
- skullgirls 2nd encore
- rivals of aether ( either one IDC)
- divekick (2 button game. Literally impossible to misinput)
- Brawlhalla (not actually I hate this game XD)

if we're talking more underground stuff, i love Sylvie
. probably an acquired taste for a lot of people, with the rather simple graphics, occasionally questionable music choices, and leaning into a lot of design choices that would normally be labeled bad, like more difficult to control movement physics or kazio difficulty. but if you're willing to accept the jank for what it is, she does an excellent job designing games around these choices, as well as often forgotten trends in game history.

Sylvie Lime, Clockwork Calamity in Mushroom World, and Sylvie RPG are some of her more approachable games, but she has made A LOT of shit (a fair amount is playable in browser, too). very entertaining rabbit hole to go down if you vibe with her stuff

Gonna throw out a few other weird games. Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they've really stuck with me and are perfect for somebody:

24 Killers
- A bizarre RPG that takes heavy inspiration from my favourite game of all time, Moon. A fun balance of snarky humour and earnest passion.

Polymute
- A small puzzle game about a shapeshifting wizard and a unique control scheme. Gets a lot of mileage out of each form.

Strawberry Cubes
- Okay I have no idea what to say about this one. It's like a Metroidvania that broke. I don't know if there's even a way to complete it, but it's fun to soak in the vibe, wander around, and find new rooms.

Here's all the gems I found amidst the slop on itch.io:

https://anuke.itch.io/mindustry
My favorite RTS. Has an actual well thought out campaign. Fast paced without being bland/simple. It uses a conveyor system to move resources to turrets and factories. Copying and pasting of blocks for reusable schematics. Also there's programming blocks which you can use to tell your units to do things. It's got a lot of servers including some for competitive multiplayer.
And most importantly.... COMPLETELY FREE

https://ivysly.itch.io/your-only-move-is-hustle
I will not stop being Ivy Sly's advertisement man. This game is just... mwah. Exquisite. Once you master free cancels, you're pretty much better than 90% of the playerbase instantly. Also, wizard can taunt mid-combo :D

https://da-flarf.itch.io/under-gunstruction
PLAY MY GAME NOW. Dungeon Crawler speedrunning game with advanced movement mechanics such as slide-dashing and damage boosting. The music is 100% authentic chiptune, with the first track being SNES and the boss theme being Genesis. It was made in a week so that's why there's no pause or options menu :D

I forgot to mention I suck at platformers, so any super punishing ones I'll be a little more wary to play / finish, but I'll be glad to give them a shot for sure. Well, after I finally get the mounting bracket for my 2.5" SSD I ordered for my laptop.

Here are games I've already played, mentioned or not:
Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe (finished)
Eastward (got it on Switch while it was still exclusive lol. started, did not finish, plan to)
Stardew Valley (played extensively on Switch, and have seen most of the content.)
Terraria (Beat Moon Lord in a Normal world)
OFF (Started, did not finish, plan to)
Undertale (finished)
Deltarune (finished up to Chapter 2)
Katawa Shoujo (one route only. really need to play that again for some other character's routes)
Wargroove (Played it, wasn't actually all that crazy about it despite liking Advance Wars...)
A Short Hike (Played it on switch, finished it)

i would love to give self advertisement for my own game, but that is lame and dumb

anyways heres where i list touhou games (:<<<<<<<<<<

touhou hisoutensoku, touhou antinomy of common flowers, and touhou sunkern fossil world (or whatever other people call it) are pretty fun games. they arent developed by the series developer (ZUN) and they arent a shmup, but they are very fun. (tasfro is small enough to be considered indie i think)

if you want to start out with a shmup touhou game, i recommend touhou 7 perfect cherry blossom, its easier than the other games (but not too easy!) and it has every important feature that you need. (also dont be afraid to play on easy difficulty!)

if you are willing to try something a bit harder, touhou 10 mountain of faith is my favourite, its music and characters are cool.

if you just wanna chill, play touhou mystias izakaya. its a fangame that has a really nice amount of content for its price, and is just really nice to turn your brain off and play.

edit: also touhou luna nights is amazingg

tl;dr touhou fun, pick a good game tho

As a companion to The Witness I also recommend the parody game "The Looker":

It's funny, clever, and you can tell it was made with genuine love for the original.

if you liked A Short Hike, Lil Gator Game is another cozy 3d platformer with satisfying movement and a very cute story. i imagine a fan of one would like the other, although i actually think Lil Gator Game has the edge in terms of writing.

if you like walking simulators (and are fine with horror) indie dev Kitty Horrorshow has made some incredible short walking simulators. most of her itch.io stuff is free, although ANATOMY, which is perhaps her best accomplishment, is 3 dollars. imo a lot of the modern PSX analog horror throwbacks being made these days don't usually hold a candle to the incredible atmosphere and bizarre writing Horrorshow accomplished.

If you want something high-octane, then I have to recommend Orbo's Odyssey! It's a short collectathon/3D platformer with an insanely fun movement system. Only takes a couple hours to complete, but there's all kinds of secrets to find and the movement is just that satisfying! Honestly check out Feverdream Johnny's games in general!

(also Cruelty Squad)

note: since you liked katawa shoujo, you may like these visual novels: subarashiki hibi, saya no uta, and Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi. those all have some disturbing content but if that's not a problem they're all entertaining.
