pretty close race between mod4k, snes and pc98 over here. so much so that i kinda don't wanna choose. i probably have the most fun with mod4k consistently.

spc is my pick because I get to work with a piano roll and samples from snes games. I only did the format once (as of this post), but had a lot of fun with the results.

I like the sgen soundchip equally, but I didn't get used to the Genny VST as much as I did with the C700 one.

ah spc too! I want to experiment more with one note songs!

Apart from that, nsf and furnace are good too (but the way I'm using furnace feels more like a mixist tool)

Furnace is fun, especially SNES and FM chips.

I've been exploring SPC workflows but haven't found one I like a lot yet. modNk seems really fun and I might try those soon, as I finally got OpenMPT to scale enough that I can use it.

hard to say as I'm still not that familiar with all the formats, but the chips I really want to explore more are the FM ones, such as YM2151, pc98, etc.

nsf_classic - I still have a lot to learn about nsf expansions though.

that said, maybe it's a bit of a cop-out BUT the format I like the *idea* of the best is
Wildchip. I want to get good enough that I can pull in varying voices from disparate chips and make something coherent out of them.

I have a lot of practice with tools (maybe Furnace?) and a lot of learning about chips themselves to go before I reach that point.

oooh that's a good question... honestly midi and mt32 are quickly becoming some of my favorites, even though im still very very new to them. i love having a bunch of finished sounds i dont have to faf around with, so i can just focus on arranging it all in a way that sounds ok! other than that i love nsf and modk, and i also like hes, sms and spc altho ive barely done anything with those three

these days vanilla (not classic) NSF.
- 80% chip to 20% samples: perfect proportions V
- clean and elegant V
- three (to four if you're patient) tonal channels, you can arrange literally everything without oversimplifying it V
- sound design is secondary to composition, exact reversal of SID; ah you've guessed, i'm not good enough at sound design XD V
- detailed volume control possible; yes that's common BUT NOT ON SID haha V
- excellent editor (i dream of FamiTracker handling every format possible) (Sega Master System is already covered) (Furnace will do, but only if it's able to spit out execs) V
- freshness factor, i'm only a beginner V

I love FM synth. PC98 is probably the winner of all the formats we have, but my favorite FM chip is one that never really had a lot of FM use - the SCSP used in the Sega Saturn. I want the soundtrack to Stellar Assault SS to be the soundtrack to my life.

I've often used FamiTracker, BambooTracker, and OpenMPT, so I'm guessing those formats are probably my favorites. I'm also really hoping to try out Furnace to see how it works and sounds, though.
