You can also set the OHB to be a 2HB for game jams if you wanna do Glorious Trainwrecks BotB Edition too

Yes, file size limit is a concern. I'm guessing the only thing to really consider is game assets like audio and graphics. So somewhere between 7.5 and 25mb?

Stencyl left me behind a couple of years ago because it now requires Java 8 and thus Mac OS X 10.9 (ironically, based off of the way the utensil was going, I was already losing interest), and I have no interest in GameMaker these days...

I will probably contribute in my most traditional role: as a musician. However, track counts are probably going to be limited for memory and time reasons.

i'm not too fond of the format being html5 (or at least every game jam being restricted to html5)
maybe there could be different game jams with different formats (some html5, some c#, some asm maybe????????????)
maybe there could be more general "game" format and the limitation should be in the bitpack
those are just suggestions though, game jams would be a great addition to botb and im glad this will exist!

The issue with posting compiled programs is the potential of spreading malware through them. HTML5 doesn't really have this problem (afaik JS doesn't mess with your system?) and the source for the programs will be readily available for everyone to see.

I like the idea of game jams btw, I should git gud and enter one of these.

Doesn't matter, a clever / malicious botbr could compile a version with malware but still provide the non-infected source code. When presented with both, users think "Oh they provided the source, the executable MUST be safe!! ^O^" and now their boot sector is in the 8th circle of hell.

HTML5 is a great, and really the only format for this to be under. There's so many great web frameworks (if we're allowed to use em) for programming games, and javascript is such a versatile language for this sort of thing even without a framework.

I'm open to trying different platforms, but I think sticking to html5 as the single platform this go around will help keep things a bit simpler.

We could have a different one another time for, say, 8bit consoles, but I think that would drastically reduce participation.

To be specific, GameMaker: Studio with the ability to make HTML5 games is not free. However, one is still free to make Windows games with a GM:Studio splash screen on it.

obv this alienates those that don't use Windows though :x

Sorry I didn't post on this sooner. With the final extension of SC6, I was thinking that the 3rd & 4th of September would be the ideal weekend. But then I was second guessing myself; should it wait until after the major? Don't know.

I'm pretty sure I know how to handle multiple BotBrs on an entry and have all points/boons distributed equally between said entry's participants. This isn't really a "clan" implementation as it would be on a per entry basis, but each involved BotBr would have a single assigned point type/class. Codist, Grafxicist, Mixist/Chipist etc.

I do have a theme I want to do tho.

Requesting .SWF as an official entry format. Many people are already familiar with Flash, it's a simple web-based format, could be used for gamejams and also for stuff like animation OHBs. I imagine it would have some potential. What do you think guys?

Chipping in:

I don't have Flash installed, Flash is completely unnecessary these days aside from Flash game sites, and Flash isn't a part of HTML5, so that'd have to be a different battle.

I would definitely be keen for game-making 1hcs... or 2hcs, if that's what Glorious Trainwrecks uses then I would trust the experts on Quality Game Making™.

There's quite a few here who can code in QBASIC, and it's a decent target for a 1hc as we found out. General DOS could actually be quite fun, come to think of it, the rule is "it must run in DOSBox" of course.

For HTML5, the only targets we care about are Firefox and Chrome. (That's right, Safari, you're inferior. Go sit in the corner. Right where your Airpods belong.) Ideally you'd want to make it work on both. But I've realised that it's probably easier to just have both installed.

Although there are some obscureish Linux distros (CRUX I'm looking at you) where Chromium refuses to work at all. Considering I have at least one computer which doesn't use CRUX, and if you're really stuck then Wine should work, this should not be a problem.

As for the filesize limit, my recommendation is to work out how big a Unity export is, and if it's not too big then add a few MB of headroom. Of course, the alternative is to cap it at 1MB and encourage people to code an engine properly - after all, you've got a whole week, and if I can code a PS1 game in 3 days then you can probably code a fairly simple HTML5 one in a week.

But yeah, after reading the posts, HTML5 is definitely the right format to use for the first game jam.
