The Fairchild Channel F was a video game console released in 1976, and was the first home console to use rom based cartridges.
The first tool for creating music is Sleizsa, which was developed by BotB's own b00daw.
Sleizsa is an mml-like compiler which has one channel of sound. It uses MESS to emulate the hardware.
Afterwards, irrlitch project made his own Channel F driver, based on the aforementioned one. It's called Sleizsa Duo, and, instead of a mml compiler, it features a xm converter.
Protip: To record sound directly from MESS, add "-wavwrite filename.wav" to the command line that initiates MESS.
