pxtone (pronounced "pistone") is a music editor from Studio Pixel of Cave Story fame. Essentially the spiritual successor of Organya (the sound engine used in Cave Story), its interface is similar to that of a DAW, but with similar limitations observed in s3xmodit formats, even down to the potential for filesize limited categories if the format is popular enough. The work flow of pxtone might be reminiscent of s3xmodit and other tracker-based music production: you can add samples and tones (known as '[b]voices'[/b]), but said samples are bound to '[b]units'[/b] with which it is possible to switch between different voices, making units more akin to channels in a tracker rather than instruments. Unique to pxtone is the ability to add synthesized voices from two supplementary programs that come with pxtone: ptVoice and ptNoise. ptVoice is primarily used for melodic timbres while ptNoise is used along with some external samples for percussive sounds. pxtone is available '[l[http://studiopixel.sakura.ne.jp/pxtone/[here]. Documentation of pxVoice is only in Japanese at the moment, and there doesn't seem to be any detailed documentation for pxVoice (Studio Pixel gave a simple explanation that basically amounted to experimenting with values), so advancements in those will come as someone gets the time to translate whatever materials are available (and figure out how the hell pxNoise actually works).
