Folktronica isn't so much a genre as a tag for electronic music that utilizes "folksy" acoustic instruments. The term has been applied to Ultramarine, Beth Orton, Four Tet, Efterklang and frickin' Avicii; artists that don't really have much in common stylistically.

I'm used to it being applied specifically to 2000's IDM/Glitch with strings, mallets, guitars, reeds and such like mum, Patrick Wolf and The Books.

When in doubt, do bleep bloop + melodica.

When I think of Folktronica, I think of some local swedish ones.
We have Nordman, who got known in the 90s with tracks like these:

Förlist

Then we have Väsen, that collabed with Snarky Puppy :D
Shapons Vindaloo

And Mats Wester from Nordman along with Olov Johansson and Mikael Marin from Väsen, had a project called "Tunga Saker" before they founded their respective bands, which made this single notable track xD (can only find it on spotify for some reason...):

But Wintergatan is probably the most known ones (remember that viral Marble Machine video? :D) - according to critics they are also considered a Folktronica band, but imo even if they have a lot of Folktronica tracks, aren't confined to just that genre. The tracks the critics probably judged them by was probably these, which I think falls into the category:
