Do all channels need to use echo, or can I omit 1 or 2 channels from using it? I'm asking because I've got some samples that sound like horse shit with the delay enabled lmao

Galak Sea, the easiest way to create a SPC file (the format needed for this compo), is to use the tracker of your choice, like OpenMPT
, to compose a song in the .it format.
You can only use 8 channels and can't use some of the commands and there are some other limitations, but that's part of the fun.

Next, you should download smconv, which can convert your .it file to a .spc file. The download also contains a txt file with all the necessary information on how to do the conversion, how to use the echo and what limitations there are exactly.

If you are confused by the whole thing, just copy your .it file and the smconv.exe to the root directory of one of your hard drives (for example D:. It's just a little but more convineint this way), open your task manager, go to File -> Run new task and run cmd.exe.
In the command window simply type "D:" to go to your D drive and than type "smconv.exe "Name of your .it file" and it will create the .spc file.
You will need something like SPCPLay
to play it back.

If you want to use the awesome SNES echo, which you should, simply put something like this in the comments of yout .it file (You can do that in OpenMPT):

[[SNESMOD]]
edl 5
efb 85
evol 80
eon 1 3 4

The numbers after "eon" determine which channels use the echo, in this case channles 1, 3 and 4. There is more information on the other settings in the smconv help file.

I hope that wasn't too confusing. Someone else surely will be able to explain it better.

Had a small explanation written out but NerdMcBoon pretty much covered it all!

Also for completeness, if you're super cool/special, you'll know how to program for the SPC700 which itself is an entire (co-)processor. That's what the "crack the code" part is referring to.

Also, if you want some classic samples from your favorite SNES games, you can download a whole bunch of SPCs from games here
. I'm sure there are other sites, but that one should get you going.

This
tool will let you convert the SPCs to .it files. The it files are usually a horrible mess, but it's good enough to extract the samples.

Have fun!

MPT's default keyboard layout is trash, which is probably what you have right now. Try changing it in the settings (setup > keyboard > import keys > choose something with ft2 or w/e).
After you're done with that, everything should be fine. MPT runs exceptionally well under wine.

an aside relevant to snes echo itself and production botbr's: I recently discovered this newer attempt at snes echo as a plugin https://impactsoundworks.com/product/snesverb/

probably the best sounding attempt to my ears, at least as a standalone effect, tho still a bit too clean, bland, and 'daw sounding' perhaps. to date the one plugin that got the echo right was the c700, but it's not setup to allow you to apply the echo on anything else but the internal sampler/emulator

it's one of the most unique plugins in my collection, that's for sure, and I love using it a lot

I hooked zircon up with Harumi to help out with Super Audio Cart back when it was still in development, specifically with the SNES related stuff (specs and whatever) so there's that too, although I don't really know the details in what went on I know at least this plugin is based off the effect in the sample library

would depend. every option has their own limitations, depending on your song it may be more practical to use one method over the other. i don't know the exact specifications of c700's export, but at least from what i've heard, there are definitely both advantages and disadvantages to using it over snesmod, particularly dealing with size issues.

of course none of that will ever beat mml but that's beside the point ;)

I looked up the C700 sound driver code myself. It comes in two varieties: one using only the SPC700 sound chip, and one that streams data from the SNES (and thus is undumpable in .spc format). In both cases, it's mostly delays and DSP register writes, with direct writes to RAM also being an option. This means that the SPC700 program is very small in filesize, but it also means that pitch bends and vibratos work about as well as MIDI for filesize efficiency (in MIDI's case, it has a kind of "auto-vibrato" feature, but I'm not counting that): you have to define the tick steps, and then watch your filesize shoot up (then again, I may be overstepping the converter's bounds... but I'm a hacker at heart, and I could just simply create my own custom music without having to pre-record it first). So SNESMod and MML (actually the Super Mario World sound driver AKA AddMusicK) still have the advantage with pitch bends and vibratos... and repetition. That's another big catch: there's no proper "RLE-like" compression here, either (or even sub-routines/patterns for that matter like what AddmusicK/SNESMod have).

For what it is now isn't the perfect solution, but it's a native tracker/software thing for it I guess

I think when it doesnt have a realtime dumping but more like an analyzer afterwards after everything has been played and whatnot will help but god knows if that'll happen and when

But I guess having a sorta low tickrate (I know FL can set that, pretty low as well) and slow tempo also help reduce the size, but this is just making assumptions

after that trainwreck of mml conversion and illness (i'm still not 100% well), i just want to take some time to recover (both psychologically and in terms of school) and also spend time with my friends and family. besides that, i also have to get a few more personal things out of the way, like projects i've put on hold because of this.

I would like to some categories with clear meanings. I've already voted and I don't remember if I interpreted wizard to mean compositional wizard or SPC wizard. Or did I use tight for compositional skills? It is, I suspect the opposite of shambolic. Cosmonaut? A literal one? A metaphorical one? There's already spacey. What does it mean?

I don't think having arbitrary/nonsensical categories hurts anything, but having a few categories with a clear definition would help inform people of why their entry did well or fell short.

voting categories have always been open to interpretation; they are only nonsensical if you decline to interpret them! imo the beauty of this is that as an entrant, you will not be overly penalized for not focusing on a specific aspect of composition that is not applicable to your music; and as a voter, you are free to interpret categories as things that are important to you personally, rather than as more "objective" qualities—in the end, enjoyment of music is subjective, so subjective scoring metrics seem fitting to me.

(i understand that this can be confusing or frustrating at first; many a n00b has inquired or complained about this issue at some point or another)

edit: also you can straight up disagree with my perspective and that is fine too

I tend to ignore the voting categories when I vote. I consider the overall score of the entry more important than the individual categories.

@Jangler: It's not a big deal to me either way as I could comment, "the poor loop points in this song distract from the outstanding songwriting" or suchlike.

@Jimmyoshi: I tend to consider the overall score as well.

@Jimmyoshi: exactly, and having several voting categories enables fine voting, such as having theorically overall scores of 4, 4.2, 4.4, 4.6, 4.8, 5, etc...

If you really want to do that ^^'

i like to use mental images to determine my votes

"spacey" i'm floating in space, is this song playing
"tight" my pants are on too tight, oh man the struggle. is this song representing my feels during this difficult time
"wizard" i'm at hogwarts, is this song playing
"cosmonaut" see this is different from spacey because this implies movement, i am SOARING thru space. is this song playing
"such pants cutlery" i am eating a 3 michelin star meal using only utensils found on or in my pants. this song is playing. how satisfying is this experience
