I... am ashamed.

I got started writing music when I noticed the Mega Man fangame crowd growing, and I started thinking about making my own. I got to designing the characters and writing most of the music, but not much further than that. I wrote the soundtrack again and again, but I never learned to program so my endeavors were essentially useless... except that I learned to write music!

I was a video game music fan, especially of SNES music. This fandom inspired me to try to make my own video game songs. My beginnings were from MTV Music Generator 2 on the PS2 back in 2004, and I found VGMix early on so that I could attempt to make remixes. I was originally going to record my MTV Music Generator 2 and Digital Hitz Factory music and release them that way, but I couldn't even remotely find a good recorder (The songs were not recorded until 2013, up to 10 years after they were produced!).

So instead, I hunted down a music making application for the Mac (I was using Mac OS X 10.3.3). I started with Harmony Assistant, and on that very first remix I released, I got a recommendation from Nario to use Modplug Tracker. I couldn't use Modplug because I was using a G3 at that time. A year after that first remix (which was done in late 2004), I discovered Schism Tracker when it was very young. The rest is history going throughout the years... ^_^

my father is a musician but as a kid i wasnt really interested in music, i only picked up interest again after knowing chiptune (thanks to ytpmv lol) and then i saw a lot of famitracker vids and decided to try to learn it and after watching a little bit of danooct1's ft tutorial (1st part) to learn that i had to make instruments to make the notes sound, THIS
was born
then after making some more stuff golgi presented me battleofthebits and here i am, but i guess that goes beyond the question lmao

d63: As a troubled child I would draw in order to try to emotionally cathart. Guitar sort of took over drawing when I discovered campfires, "extra curricular activities", and guitar jams. At the end of highschool I began being interested in emulation and dumping. Emulation of old systems spawned an interest in the music of those games. I remembered recording the soundtrack for Art of Fighting on SNES on tape so I could listen to it with a Walkman in bed in my middleschool years. When I graduated highschool I began to mess with pxtone, NerdTrackerII, Fruity Loops, and Magix Music Maker. A few years later I became comfortable using FamiTracker; and then FamiTracker spawned my interest into other forms of electronic music.

[EPILOGUE: back when i was about 11-13 i was on Starmen.net, trying to make Earthbound fangames. i did programming for a few and spritework, all of them never finished and always forgotten. i downloaded FL studio to try and make music but just wound up making crappy soundfont-replacements for midis. I even used GXSCC. this was me before i tried to seek music.]

it was mexicansunflower (meckz)! he covered a tim follin song down to the nes-sound(possibly with danooct1? don't remember) and i was like "wow how was this made" and i found danooct1's youtube, where i discovered famitracker

it was a FT nsmb cover possibly by meckz that made me use famitracker

so i spent about two years on the FT forums making really bad music and mostly troll posts, up until i saw a jrlepage song on there (i remember it having to do with a jungle or something?) and since it was for an ohc, it was linked to battleofthebits. i checked that site out and got into it, loving the community and the music -- and i still do now.

when i joined BotB, i only knew how to famitrack. but, ever since then, ohcs and formats have pushed me to my limits, forcing me to exceed them and try many other formats as well! so overall, without BotB, i would've never become an expansive musician and probably would've still been making joke songs and bad attempts in FamiTracker rather than perhaps doing good songs in FamiTracker, OpenMPT, and even some beats in Ableton! see, i'm really happy i joined botb because it made me grow as a musician and i'll never forget that

so to recap, danooct1 and meckz made me want famitracker, i tried it, made some songs on the FT forums for 2 years until i found botb thanks to jrlepage and became a better musician as a result (thank u botb and puke for making it)

My mother is a musician and singer, and my dad attempted to be a guitarist when I was very young. He ended up giving his guitar to me. I played music from the beginning. It was all around me. In the house there were always records playing, and I always liked to go to church and play the instruments. I started to get serious about music when I was around 11-12. This would have been around 1994. I was always into Nintendo and loved the music. I started making "albums" around this time, on cassette, overdubbing using the sound-on-sound method. I got better at bass and guitar, and eventually really took up drums in a big way, won some awards in High School for drum competitions. My band in which I played drums won our High School talent show our Senior year playing "Under The Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers, a performance which was memorable for the stoned, drunk singer that we'd canned the week previously hilariously taking the stage and attempting to sing, and getting dragged off stage by the Principal. Good times.

I was a music major in college, and I went on from there to Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, OH to study music production and engineering. Somehow I ended up in Florida, and after a few years of working a day job while doing music on the side, I finally made music my full-time livelihood.
That's the short, short, short version of my musical journey. :)

i got started makin bubbles near the ocean floor. one day i made a big bubble and it was bigger than everyone else's bubble so that made them mad and they chased me away and told me not to come back. it was lonely for a while, but everyone else beyond home was always impressed with my big bubbles so that was always something that made me feel a little better, nevertheless lonely.

one day i couldn't take it anymore and did 30xPerfect entries and shot up past the moon and landed a sick tailslide on the startrail near mars. of course i lost momentum and plummeted back to earth and crashed on the beach. i was so sad from loneliness i figured i'd just sit there and wait for something, anything to happen. one night some crackhobo was walking along the beach and tripped over my limp carcass, spilling all his crack into my face and nose. it was some sorta majickal crack maybe, cos i shriveled up into an 11 yr old boy and ran away toward the city.

i was very hungry and came across a nice suburban neighborhood and decided to go into one of the nicer houses to see how it looked inside. i walked into the kitchen and started makin a pb&j when my parents came home and said welcome home son! i was so happy i chirped the happiest chirp ever and they were very impressed with my musical abilities.

mom said, jsr honey go get the famitracker i think he is ready : )) so dad taught me how to use it and i got real good at it in no time. sometimes my fans would send me new music makers in the mail and i got good at them too.

anyway that is my story. i like makin music it's pretty fun

Wow! I've got two: The first is that I was thinking about a friend around the same time that she sent me a text message (but I had my android off so i didn't get it until now). The second is that the question of the day for today is "What's a weird coincidence that's happened to you?" and I'm posting this just a few minutes after noticing the first weird coincidence mentioned above.

Wow.

DAY 63: What is your least favourite word?
Any French word with unncessary complications drives me nuts. Stuff like accueil, which has the annoying property of containing a CC followed by a U, neither of which is pronounced the way you'd normally pronounce it in any other word. I also dislike post-reform spellings (e.g. new ognon vs. old oignon, new évènement vs. old événement, and a handful of others).

In English, "serendipitous" strikes me as particularly ugly.

DAY 64A: What is your view on the "half full/half empty glass"?
The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

DAY 64B: What is the first thing you do when your computer has booted?
Usually I launch Firefox, do my daily Facebook-Youtube-FT Forums-BotB browsing routine, then move on to other miscellaneous stuff. Sometimes I'll even open Famitracker, write down a couple mediocre patterns, and close it back up again.

DAY 64C: What is your handwriting like?
It's decent, I guess. Nothing fancy or incredibly stylish, but definitely legible.

DAY 64D: What's one of your habits?
I really like to share new stuff that I learn about in my daily life with other people, much to their annoyance and dismay, I think. I'm very curious about stuff that most would call trivial, so while I tend to have lots of things to talk about, I'm also pretty boring at the same time, incredibly enough!

DAY 64E: What is the scariest moment you've ever experienced?
I was too young at the time to remember it clearly now, but I vaguely recall sticking keys in an electrical outlet as a toddler. All I can remember is seeing a bolt of blue lightning, being propelled against the wall opposite, and my dad rushing out of the piano room to find his son completely terrified and with a very subtle hint of burning smell.

DAY 68: What was the last song you listened to?
Brahms' Symphony No. 4, Op. 98. Don't think this is in any way fully representative of all I listen to. You wouldn't believe the wide variety of genres that I enjoy listening to.

Day 69: A man and a woman walk into a bar. They start talking to each other and after a while they decide to go to her place to sleep with each other. A couple of days later the man calls the woman and asks if she wants to go for a date. She agrees, and in the following weeks, turning into months and eventually years they grow stronger as a couple, buy an apartment together and start contemplating marriage.

On their wedding day, the woman, obviously nervous about the wedding, asks her bridesmaid: "Do you think we're doing the right thing?". The bridesmaid immediately nods and says "Yes". The woman looks at her bridesmaid for a while and says "So do I".

So the man and the woman get married, have kids and live happily ever after. The joke is that all the characters of this story are lobsters.
