And why? What about it makes it your favorite?

My favorite at the moment is BoJack Horseman, and I'm currently on the season finale. It is overall such an excellent and emotionally complex storyline. I love the realistic dialogue and characters, and I'm kinda sad it's ending lol. It's such a great dramedy, and there are so many clever details I love about it.

digimon! almost all of the mainline! besides ghost game and adventure 2020 (i still have to watch tri), the characters and stories are pretty great and exciting. and i love how evolution in this series works. you may have heard the "dog evolves into cat into angel" statement about digimon, but trust me its so much more interesting and theres actual world lore + reasoning.

my favourite seasons of digimon is probably tamers (it had a particular combo of all the factors that make a show great!!) plus a rather dark feel), followed by appli monsters (modern situations and AI relevancy), followed by xros hunters part 3 (arresterdramon!!! my boy)

tldr digimon. check it out

Revolutionary Girl Utena, probably. the fascinating and messy characters, the bizarre music (particularly the duel music lol), Ikuhara's ability to make the most out of an obviously limited budget with some brilliant and surreal visuals, and the general amount of thematic and allegorical depth all astound me. it's analysis of the idea of "chasing something eternal" and how that gets linked to gender roles and patriarchy feels are wonderfully radical, even compared to shows it inspired 20-25 years later. i could go on and on, but i'll just stick to saying that i think it's the most brilliant anime, even compared to the other artsy anime from its period (one helluva statement, i know, but i'm sticking to it).

also feel like i should mention (partially because i think its contrast in tone next to demented-ass Utena is funny) K-On! as my go-to comfort show, and the only comfort show i've had that i've never really lost interest in. it manages some great characterization despite the light plot, and the direction and animation are top notch, particularly S2 (i like S1 as well, but S2 is where Naoko Yamada really found her voice as a director). granted, i actually think Yamada's only gotten better as a director since (The Heike Story is underrated as hell, and Liz and the Bluebird is perhaps her best work), but i think the laid-back tone of K-On! particularly resonates. so yeah, it's between K-On! and Utena, i suppose.

(edit: oh and also K-On!'s music rules. i've had Pure Pure Heart on repeat while driving more than once lol)

i liked bojack a lot as it was coming out, all the more so because there were a lot of loving references to the actual city of LA, where i lived for many years. very dark show though! not a great depression watch lol, but it's some bold and deft writing to just present these deeply flawed characters and tell a messy story about them without forcibly cleaning up the mess, you know?

i'm torn between answering nichijou (the most uproarious and wonderful 'slice of life' of all time that was given a blessedly high budget and a lot of love) and the tatami galaxy, which is both beautifully animated and a great story with an incredible arc/climax and memorable characters. virtually anything masaaki yuasa has had a hand in is golden

Exactly, dami! BoJack is such a great deep dive on depression, and it’s like things that happened seasons ago come back to haunt him even when he tries moving on. You just feel bad for him, and everybody else around him, really.

Also, my brother and I just watched Breaking Bad for the first time, and that’s the best show I’ve ever seen by far. But it’s not my favorite at the moment lol

Bernd das Brot. (Night Loop of a kids channel in German television)

Very fond memories of pre-school/elementary school me staying up late and just laughing away at the "funny bread man".
Heck, I still occasionally watch recordings of the original episodes on YT.

Of the past several years, the first show that comes to mind is Detectorists. It's a lovely slice-of-life dramedy about the lives of members of a local metal detecting club in Britain. The characters are lovable, quirky, and relatable. The relationships and plot points are not too complex, but meaningful. Well written. This one was an instant hit for me.

Bonus: I secretly think about Roz's vocal and lyrical style when I hear the theme song by Johnny Flynn
, whose other music is also good, see The Wrote & The Writ

Scavengers Reign goes absolutely crazy—it’s one of the most uniquely told stories that i’ve ever seen and someyhing that i’ll probably be thinking about forever. if you like weird alien life and can handle a pinch of gore then just go into it blind, trust me.

Arcane is also *very* well written. if you want action that’s actually meaningful for the characters involved this show does that sort of thing perfectly.

yes! I actually just watched Scavenger's Reign because of the animated short film Scavengers on YT, and then I found out they turned it into a Netflix series. I really liked it, the worldbuilding was so unique.

@Mikaboshii > Oh I was gonna start watching it tonight, I hope I'll like it too!

I loved Bojack Horseman, I watched it one or two years ago, it sure leaves a strong impression!

As a personal fav, I would pick an anime called Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World
(the 2003 version, they made stuff after this but I didn't watch it).

I watched it some time ago so I forgot part of it but I remember I loved how it was well written, with some twists I wasn't expecting. It had a kinda dark and dreamy aura. I'm also quite fond of stories about people going on a journey and this is one of the main topics here!

If we're limiting to strictly TV, then Star Trek DS9. That show knows how to build a story, characters around it and how to RUN with it. It's extremely good. And sad, but still really good.

But, if we're also considering non-TV/internet series and stuff, then anything the guys over at Technical Difficulties did and still are doing. Hilarious shows with a great, funny cast - they're always a joy to watch, especially after a hard day's of work. Could go through owt in a day's work, put them on, and it's suddenly worth everything you've gone through there.

My parents raised me on Monty Python's Flying Circus, Star Trek, and Doctor Who, because (I'm surprised how long it took me to realize this) they are huge nerds. So I'm nostalgically fond of those shows.

Nowadays I don't watch a lot of TV, but two shows which I really enjoyed were Flight of the Conchords and Over the Garden Wall.

Flight of the Conchords (about a pair of struggling New Zealand musicians trying to make it in New York) has a lot of totally deadpan humor stemming from characters taking bizarre social situations in stride, which is a combination I love, and has some genuinely funny pastiche songs (since the leads were a musical-comedy duo in real life) on top of that.

Over the Garden Wall (a Cartoon Network series about 2 brothers' surreal encounters as they wander through a mysterious wood, with a kind of Alice-in-Wonderland flavor) had unique and carefully crafted aesthetics. It felt distinctly "American" -- patching together folkloric imagery and music from a variety of time periods -- in way I've never really seen before, which is funny considering that most of the media I experience is American. And its setting was just the right level of spooky, conveying the sense of an uncanny and unpredictable place, but one that often isn't as threatening as it looks at first glance. Most importantly, it's short and tells a satisfying self-contained story, only ten 11-minute episodes. (I don't have a lot of patience for long-running shows -- Flight of the Conchords is also just 2 seasons.)

I don't watch many shows or movies, so my opinion is not that valuable here, but my current favorites are...

Animated: Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Steven Universe
Live Action: The Expanse

I like The Clone Wars because I love the Star Wars universe but a lot of the movies kinda suck. When it comes to sci-fi I love when it still has a grungy aesthetic; I absolutely hate Star Trek's aesthetic, it's far too sterile (sorry to the above star trek fans). The Expanse also has cool sci-fi world building, but the ending is very rushed because the show lost funding.

Steven Universe is one I'm currently watching with my partner and I love how endearing all the characters are, plus great music and art. We'll probably finish season 5 within the next week!
Over the Garden Wall and Arcane are next on my list to watch.

Dammit, I wish i could be able to express lots of words of love and admiration to a series the way many of the botbrs here do. All I can say is Steven Universe and Sailor Moon XDD

(maybe I'll add some explanation later? it depends if I'm capable of express words that makes sense)

Edit: I forgot to mention that also love Drawn Together, or as I know it: "La casa de los dibujos" (I don't love it the same way I love Sailor Moon and Steven Universe, but when it comes to hang around with some of my cousins or my brother, is a great series to watch together with lots of dark/black humor and excellent Voice Actors like Gerardo Reyero, Lalo Garza, Evelyn Solares, etc)

OH GOD I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT INFINITY TRAIN AAAAAAAAAHGGGGG!!!!! This series is so underrated. I really loved the story and the aesthetics that the series gave, plus I always liked when the main characters change per season (kind of like JJBA), making each season have its own identity. Each episode feels different from one another because of the train gimmick and its variety of wagons(? rooms?) with new and different worlds to explore. I'd say my favorite season (or book) so far is season 2 (I haven't seen season 4 yet).

@Francomanx Infinity Train was done so dirty and deserved so much better! the middle seasons especially resonated with me, the characterization was top-notch and it really felt like there was so much potential with its crazy-ass worldbuilding. but then yeah, it got obliterated from legal existence. what a shame.

and now its showrunner is gonna run the Among Us TV show. so there's that, i guess lol

i've never looked into future plans for Infinity Train, but it did feel like they were setting up a plotline with Amelia and that turtle girl (i forget her name) in Book 3. very frustrating that we aren't gonna see that, they already had a pretty fun dynamic.

and yeah they are working on an Among Us show lol. they made a trailer a couple months back and the cast is hilariously stacked (Elijah Wood, Patton Oswalt, and Yvette Nicole Brown, among others). i have no idea how i feel about that lol

I'll always have a special place in my heart for Dream Corp LLC. It's such an weird premise for a show, but one that seems specifically tailored for me. Basically, it's an absurdist workplace comedy set in a dream therapy facility that is just one big OSHA violation, with a fun and unique cast of characters and really cool psychedelic rotoscoped animation!
