what if we go crazy and put the mp3 render limit (and allgear filesize limit maybe) up to 25mb?
renoise and html5 already hav 25mb limits.

we live in 2023 now, botb is an adult, maybe its time to risk something!!

the reason i ask: disk space doesnt seem to be SUPER important to botb anymore and renders are *the* way to experience botb submissions. they also get used for bandcamp and youtube.
if someone makes a 8 min banger, it feels wrong to listen to a low-bitrate render of it on youtube or bandcamp even if the source module plays it on HQ

agree. If a site that gets as much traffic and uploads as discord can do it i don't see why renders can't do the same.

i would certainly be more inclined to submit longboys if i didn't have to reduce them to like 128kbps or less. in that 'art freedom' respect i'm all for it

this raises all sorts of questions though--

- raising the render limit *only*, as in *not* allgear or other mp3-formats, means that one could submit a source file in a major and then upload a much larger filesize render than if they simply submitted mp3. is this ok? would it necessitate new rules around submissions?

- raising the limit for both renders and mp3-formats is confusing too. does allgear get special treatment? if not, raising the limit for wildchip and/or fakebit is even weirder, because source files can be submitted, and this drastically changes the possibility of what can be submitted (for example a 25mb .vgm instead of 10mb). technically this also applies to allgear in majors. does this stuff matter, since mp3 is the focus of these formats and any source is just "bonus"? i guess it might actually be fine, but it is worth mentioning!

- there's some historical entries that are uncomfortably low bitrate, like bluenoc's huge Dungeon Synth II collab.. ok, if we disregard allgear and the other mp3-formats, can renders be replaced for super long tunes so that their bitrates can be higher? or is this retconning too much? if they are on a bandcamp compilation, those old versions are already distributed and available.

1) wildchip has a 7mb limit iirc, so u can already upload a larger render than source *shrug
fakebit wld be the same as allgear, i just didnt want to list all the mp3-only formats in my post
2) i wldnt hav an issue with allgear or fakebit allowing a 25mb sourcefile submission either because it doesnt rly matter there. in your examples case: the vgm format wld still hav the 10mb limit and a fakebit vgm submission is still a fakebit submission
3) too bad for the historical entries, i wld say. for non-mp3 submissions from the past, i already replaced poor quality renders of old entries before anyway (some old nsf renders had a shitty bitrate) even tho they already appeared on compilations or in yt videos. or i replaced them with hardware renders after they got bandcamped etc.
in that case u have at least a better version for the radio and for peoples archiving/downloading-convenience on botb itself

nah, if we're gonna go lossless we should at least compress it to a flac or something wav is super duper duper wasteful and slow to donload.

this being the result of the thread is truly the best timeline.. i'm excited to be able to send in bigger stuff to a bunch of formats like pxtone, mptm, vgm, hes, and of course beefier mp3s. thank you so much!

You attracted my attention, because before I started getting lazy about making them, I made higher quality renders of some of the stuff I had made and put them on box.com and posted either via comment or description. Not all of my higher quality ones are compatible with the site because of filesize reasons, though.

These tracks have a higher quality render I made that I think would qualify for the site (note for damifortune: the hardware option is also open)...

These ones don't qualify because they're over 12.5 MB:
