From my experience, Mastodon kinda stinks, so I don't use it.
I've compared it to Linux in the past, both in the sense that there's a lot of instances (like there's a lot of linux distributions/variants), and in the sense that people expect you to know how to use it and almost belittle you if they see you're frustrated with it rather than earnestly helping you.
The instance I was/am on is riddled with these pro-AI fanatics that I just plain dislike, and someone's reply was "lmfao you're on that instance?? of course there's going to be those folks there, find a better one" as if I was supposed to know that from the get go?
So... I just don't use it anymore. I don't really have the patience to keep browsing through instances and finding one that 1) has a lot of the people I know, and 2) lets me more easily follow other folks without having to copy a link or whatever, which stinks. If it works for others, awesome, you should continue using it, but it didn't work for me unfortunately... alas!
