When I export my .mid file from bosca ceoil, the instruments sound completely different to what they sounded like in-program and when I export the .wav file. I only used instruments from the midi section - is this just normal with .mid files?

I've only just finished my midi submission for winter chip so I need an answer before the entrance period closes

i haven't used this program so i don't have a direct answer for you, but the specific MIDI soundset you want for the botb format, MSGS MIDI, is the Windows default one that you will hear if you open a midi in Windows Media Player, aka "gm.dls" aka "windows midi soundfont"

it's possible the program you're using is using sounds other than those, as there are lots of other general MIDI soundsets besides MSGS. this is just "the most common one" because it's come bundled with Windows for like 25yr

if they aren't the right instruments at all, it could be a couple things... if you're getting all acoustic grand piano specifically, program change info isn't being set. if they're just not correct, try matching the numbers up with the left column on here and seeing if that exports more like what you wanted if they are different

What do you mean by "matching the numbers up"?

The instruments aren't all grand piano, they just sound different and wrong - but the instruments listed in the midi sections are exactly the same as the ones in the MSGS MIDI. I made sure to check beforehand, heh...

i mean the Patch numbers in the lyceum list i linked. they're in a specific order so if you were hearing completely the wrong sounds, like a trumpet instead of a synth or something, you'd want to make sure the patch number in your program matched the one i linked. (e.g. "string ensemble 1" = 49)

but it sounds like you verified that already if i'm understanding right

if they just sound different, like not the same trumpet but definitely still a trumpet, your program is prooobably just not using MSGS MIDI sounds. the .mid export unfortunately is the one to pay attention to, however it sounds in windows media player

Well, then… I guess bosca ceoil isn’t a fit program for producing midi entries after all! That’s one submission down the drain, wonder if I could refactor it for fakebit…
