I had an odd idea recently. What if someone holds a series of music competitions, and artwork competitions, then the winning entries from each get turned into an RPG or some other type of game. It's just an idea. I have coding experience, but really anyone could do it. I just think it would be neat to hold competitions on this site, where the winning entries are turned into the soundtrack/assets for a free video game.

technically we've had series in this vain before (see ultimate hum) but not this extensive before. you'd need the proper hosting requirements for it (badges in allgear/wildchip + visuall, as well as _b750) but i'd be down to do all that. gotta allocate some time to it ofc but i'll see what i can do :D

Cool, I'll farm some badges/boons to see what I can do! I really like this idea, and it was inspired by ultimate hum.

personally, i'd be a bit cautious with this. making a game is no easy feat and if the promise is to take these assets and put them into a game then people should be confident in this and the ability of whomever will be putting those assets together.

however, if it's your own boons (or you find people to host for you), you follow all the hosting rules/requirements etc. then I don't see a problem with this.

i have a couple of ideas for collaborative tic-80 projects that I *may* be looking to run in the future

My own response is that I was aware of a game project called BOTBMon (Pokémon-like game with BOTBers as the Pokémon) by kfaraday and a few others (goluigi I think was one of the contributors), with a few more contributing music... but the music wasn't done through a series of OHBs. It was done via 64k .it files, though.

I don't remember about the graphic assets as far as how that was created (guessing kfaraday did them), Jangler's Joogle (RIP) was involved in getting stats, and it was a collaborative process on how the game would shape up. I ended up as one of the species (I think they took them from the mightiest BOTBers list, with me making the cut), and I have a surviving asset of my own Pokémon sprites, as well as a few others.

This was also way back in 2013-2014, and was never completed. I ended up continuing to create a few extra pieces of music as entries on this very website in 2019: one for Summer Chip IX and three for the S3XMODIT Gauntlet.

Sounds like fun! It should be achievable, with tightly-defined expectations and scope. A fully or partially visual development environment might encourage more people to get involved (such as GB studio, gdevelop, defold, scratch, etc).

I had one thought for a lower-stakes way to try spinning this up:
What if the initial goal was to create a micro-game or interactive game-like moment, with a single interesting concept, mechanic or mood? It would function like a window into a game world, featuring the music and imagery.

These mini-games could either be super simple, or small slices of something much bigger, but they would be *finished* quickly either way. If people enjoyed the process enough, new ones could be devised.
There is more potential for diverse experimentation in sound, image and game design using this approach I think. The ideal scope would probably be similar to a typical 2-day game jam at the most, just in terms of hours invested for development.

Finished games could be posted to itch.io or something, been wanting an excuse to play with GB Studio... :-)

You know something? A WarioWare-like approach is not a bad idea, now that you've got me thinking...

I actually have a real DS and the actual game and I have WarioWare DIY Showcase via WiiWare (one of the few things I bought before Wii Shop's demise). The big problem that I have is that I'm not willing to do console mods, firmware or otherwise.

I like the idea of a warioware type game with multiple minigames. but i don't think it should be in warioware diy.
