Every week, one of the less common formats could be available for anyone with boons to host, as if they had the badge that week. Many people here don't enjoy bothering the admins, and this could be a way to encourage badge progress in obscure formats.

some of us just don't like bothering others, maybe a thread with people who are willing to host different kinds of battles would be cool too!

OHBs take place sporadically - and always by a suggestion in the chat containing the words: "can anyone host an OHB?"

i read the first part of the post and was about to say "wow thats kinda rude" and then clicked the link and it all makes sense :V

on the other hand, not everyone can be that self-assertive. for these people, i think one of two things would help, a way for them to avoid the fear of being an inconvenience ot others, and/or assurances that it's fine to be a bit pushy

I think the bigger issue is that an obscure format usually brings low entrant counts, which means the hostist increases the risk of losing their boon deposit. From the same article linked by A-zu-ra:

There is also a 750 boon deposit required. If fewer than 3 BotBrs participate in the OHB, the deposit will not be returned. At all. Don't even ask, BotB's gonna get greedy at you. >:(

Therefore it's favorable to only host ohbs for obscure formats if the hostist knows they can get enough people to agree so that they don't lose their boons.

I totally get where people are coming from with this.

But I actually think the current system works rather well, to be honest. Sure, it can take some time to get the OHBs you want, but a little bit of patience should not be too much to ask for.

Just don't be afraid to ask on IRC/Discord! Most people here are really nice and will be glad to host stuff for you.

And the site is inactive? What? Have you seen the OHBs lately? I mean, how many more could there possibly be? The formats have been rather diverse too. There was a freaking photomash OHB yesterday.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who actually really likes the RPG aspect of this site. I think it's fun to hunt for badges and stuff, and I like putting the work and patience into it.

Just in case the sentiment remains for anyone...
People afraid of losing boons, consider this:

If you host a battle and it gets one entry, guess what? You bought a gold medal and probably badge progress, but WAY more impressively.. you wrote and released a frickin' song in an hour! So many musicians that I've explained OHBs to can't believe people do it, and on the level that we do.

Personally, I compete in every OHB that I can, because I'm on here to get better at writing music, to become less afraid of messing up, to improve how quickly I work, and because BotB is also a game that is fun. I even try for formats I know I am absolutely not good enough with to finish something in time, just for the IRL experience points. 750 cyber-dollars ain't no thing at all!
