I just spent the last thousand years rewriting the this Lyceum page. Perhaps this page should be somehow pinned for n00bz so that we can eliminate a lot of redundant questions, and it might get more people actually involved with the site!! <3

Also re: the Lyceum, there is currently no way to edit the categories that a particular page belongs to - not a huge problem but some pages seem to belong to a lot more categories than what is needed.

It would also be nice if I could link directly to a category page, i.e. a page with some sort of description and a list of all the pages that belong in that category.

And last (and probably least), it'd be nice if the Lyceum editor page displayed the same Firiki(sp?) toolbox that the comment poster does.

Sorry for all the feature requests <333
Perhaps this should be left until a better time!!

i think this page should be featured on the front or something for n00bs so they don't ask a bunch of questions and there are less first time mishaps

good job ipiiiiii

Perhaps, in light of recent unfortunate events, I should add a "common courtesy" section?

(I also added a small thing in the misc section regarding spam threads)

When I signed up, I had no idea what a "lyceum" was and how it was functionally different from "barracks".

good job!

lyceum in general: if any of you clever catz wants to help me with the firki markup we can copy the stuff from aanaaanaaanaaana.net/dogumentation to the lyceum

:)

edit: i also have a vt2 and sid-wizard tutorial around somewhere. i lurrrrrrrrrrrrrrve writing manuals so if theres any particular bit of software that you think needs to be written about on the lyceum (and you dont want to write it yourself) tell me about it~

not gonna do openmpt/famitracker/renoise etc because they are insanely complicated

Sorry I've been ignoring this. I like the direction but would also like to give it a once over and clean it up a bit. There's some funny stuff that's cute and some that's superfluous/noisy. Just wanna make sure it's succinct as well as charming.

puke7: Of course!! Anyone should feel free to change anything about it!!

ant1: There is a page on Firki Markup, but I don't think its too well organised... I'll see what I can do later.

I've updated the n00b page as well as the OHB page (found at OHC) to reflect the new OHB hosting rules.

I am currently in the process of rewriting the class pages so that they're all consistent and informative and nice. Afterwards I'll fill in the format page so that that is useful too <3 ALL DONE!! <3 but SID and Renoise format pages need to be written. Indeed, most of the format pages need to be rewritten. I'll doo that soooooonnnn

I also found a bug with Firki - any type of tag within a list item tag will break the list:

'[ul['[li[This is normal.]'[li[Let's get 'bold' oh no now the list is broken!!]'[li[This is normal.]]

becomes

  • This is normal.
  • Let's get '
  • bold oh no now the list is broken!!
  • This is normal.
  • ]

I'm not sure if these kind of requests should be posted here, but I'm a "n00b" so I just assume that I can do that.

I think it would be pretty neat if you could click on a link somewhere in your Profile (maybe the class & level thingy, just below the username) and then you'll get a short description of your class and your level (what I can do and other important stuff that I should know) instead of clicking a few million links just to find out what I can do here.
Yes, the glossary section has been helpful, but I'm still not sure if I know everything that I should...

The site hasn't been very kind to me when it comes to a proper introduction. Yesterday, it almost felt like I should have known all the rules before joining BotB, which is the reason why this place felt a little... limited for me. But I don't know, it's probably because of my current level and class, or maybe I'm just incredibly stupid and don't know how to navigate properly...

This site isn't as confusing as it was yesterday, but still, I think the introduction could be improved, even though it's not a HUGE problem...

    Thanks for reading!

Oh yeah, Warheart, I've been meaning to tell you for ages: get in IRC

irc.esper.net #botb or use the chats link above
IRC is literally half of the website activities, if not more ahahah

I know what you mean about the harsh introduction, it's not a very easy learning curve and it took me a while to understand the site, let alone bond with its community. That's what I aim to change though!! <3

    ^ fo real doe

Yeah, I remember my first days here. I was as confused as a...something that gets confused a lot.
It took some helpful peoples on IRC showing me what's what before I really felt comfortable here. I have watched a lot of people who are now well-established on BotB go through the same confusion.

I definitely appreciate any effort to make it easier. No need to dumb anything down for n00bs' sake if there's an easy guide to understanding the unique terminology and systems that make BotB such a fun place to be.

    Also, dogs.

Okay, over the coming days I plan to rewrite each of the format pages to be a little more helpful. Some of the pages have a lot of words detailing the technical specifications and all, which is great though not extremely useful. A more accessible page would be one that is useful in a pinch - I'd like it so you are able to go to a format's entry and quickly know what you need to know in order to create an entry (e.g. for the occasional rare formats in OHBs). This would include:

    1) What features/limitations the format has (e.g. number of channels, type of synthesis) and so on.
    2) Links to the format creation software, including a short description and what operating system(s) they are compatible with. It would also be nice to detail a rating for each software based on its popularity/ease-of-use (a rating out of 7, of course). If BotB has any tutorials/effects lists/etc. for any of the tools, they should also be linked.
    3) Links to the format playback software. Similar to the above.
    4) Perhaps it would also be wise to provide links to songs that would serve as "good examples" of the format - we could use submissions to previous major battles that got 1st (or very high) in its respective format.

I am posting this here to remind myself as well as to alert others on what I am planning on doing. Unless somebody says otherwise, I'll start planning (but not implementing) things that Have To Be Done.

I will, of course, need to gather many opinions on the rating of trackers and "good examples". If people think this is a good idea, I'll do it over IRC.

    I'd appreciate any input!! <3

I'm back from my inactivity and not really busy with other things like music or building computers so I'll have another stab at the Lyceum!! <3

Cause really I looked at the Sunvox lyceum page when doing Spring Tracks II and it is not helpful at all hahahahaa. Maybe that's why nobody uses Sunvox around here :^)

Interrobang Pie, I traced it back to the Sunvox (format) article. There were some unclosed tags. I'll take a quick glance at the firki interpreter code, but I doubt I'll find the exact recursive nightmare memory hogging source.

edit: I added a line that should help cancel the loop when it fails. :X

Hmm, that didn't work because I've just managed to break it again ahahahaha!! I'm super sorry about all of this </3

Perhaps if there was an offline, safer program that could interpret Firki so that lyceum pages could be tested before they are uploaded... though making it would cost time that one probably could spend towards fixing the bug...
