so i posted this in the discord but i realized i could also post it here too where more people could probably see it; i recently plotted some cool plots and graphed some cool graphs about the site using data pulled from the api.

full collection of graphs here

decided to only deal with xhb data for now as that's what i'm most familiar with but maybe i will check out some more stuff in the future. i do have a couple ideas for things like entries in general or majors but i wanted to stick to something smaller while figuring out how the api worked

many interesting excerpts:
- a couple overlooked formats with typically high participation but not many battles include liveplay, famistudio, jummbox, wavetracker, photo, and all the tinymod formats (although i didn't see what it looked like when you group them together)
- of all the very popular formats (>250 battles) there's a surprising gap between 1st (remix) and 2nd (allgear) when ranking average number of entrants. remix is around 7, allgear is around 6, and all the others are mostly all bunched up between 5 and 6 (woah)
- the most popular start times for battles is roughly between 3pm and 7pm eastern time. many battles also happen late friday night at around 10pm, but i think a huge portion of that is probably YEA VIDEOGAMEs
- more battles tend to happen on the weekends and they tend to get more entries
- allgear is usually the most popular format every year, however in the beginning nsf and s3xmodit dominated, and there's been a couple years recently where remix pulled ahead instead
- obvious huge jump in participation during covid but every year since has still had more xhb particiaption than any year prior to 2020
- the average number of entries for every xhb actually hasn't gone up that much over the years, even though total battles and total entries has gone way up

i love this!!!
ive done some analysis things like this in the past too but never got motivated enough to present the results in nice graphs like this.
love it. (did i already mention that i love this?)

this seems like a good place to drop a link to this one again tho: https://battleofthebits.com/academy/GroupThread/39811/

i like the roundup of the trends, very cool

wonder if the premium xhb hosting times correlate to when euro people would also be free to participate at the same same as people in american times, might make sense

id also be interested to know whether the entry average going from 5 to 6 has much to do with the azurglade xhb outliers

the "battle start times" and "number of entries given start times" charts are especially interesting because I think some of the biggest outliers correspond to specific series, as you alluded to. Sunday at 19:00EST was the original seasonal allgear series time, and 17:00EST was the time I chose to pick it up on for a year - both iterations often drew large crowds. Friday 22:00EST was the original YEA VIDEOGAME weekly time, and even though they are not always huge battles, I did like a hundred of them at that time. I'm not so sure about Saturday 15:00EST though. I think that might actually be the "true" most popular time. I've done some more recent YEA VIDEOGAMEs at that time too (I'm not consistent now) but it seems to be a frequent scheduling pick for others as well.

"average xhb entries over time" chart is also cool - I do feel like xhb mode comes and goes in waves here, and the chart supports this! especially in the last several years it spikes up and down.

really awesome to see, thanks for putting these together!
