hey all. tryna learn openmpt to make some funny dos modules but the program is laid out much differently than im used to (isn’t it based on ImpulseTracker? Im used to the FT2 standard, so all the effects are confusing me, although I at least was able to redo my keybinds).

anyway, anybody know of any good tutorials? it can be YouTube or written tutorials, idrc, just if it’s good and could help me. i have plenty of experience with trackers and stuff obviously so i don’t need a complete guide for beginners, just a general guide to the program

i was always looking at the Effect Reference in the openmpt manual when starting out: https://wiki.openmpt.org/Manual:_Effect_Reference though you can also double-click on the pattern to add stuff where your cursor is, and it's useful to scroll through the effects options there too. the status bar at the bottom gives you some info about what you're inputting as well.

in general that mpt wiki/manual is pretty helpful, if a bit verbose, about laying out all the features and functions - i swear i'm not just saying this in the "rtfm" way lol, it's really good.

there's A Lot of useful things hidden behind right-click context menus, just generally speaking, like when editing samples or instruments or even just pattern data. and if you find something you think is cool, you can basically always set a keybind for it. stuff that feels essential to me - interpolate vol column, interpolate fx column, "amplify" (a scaler for the vol column), expand/shrink selection. also you can Ctrl + scroll-wheel to change values of a selection. also also you can Shift + drag a selection to clone it at the new location you drag to.

the tab layout takes some getting used to but it ends up feeling pretty smooth once you've done it for a while!
