sean, argarak and nitrofurano liēkd this
so, i was just casually browsing my fsound folder and experimented with the nfTracker made by null1024 in early december 2010.

you can get all files im talking about here btw: https://kleeder.de/files/botbFiles.php

i found "fsound-old.zip" which seems to be an older version without volume control and no sample support. the swf-version made by shiru seems to use the state of this version too.

"fsound.zip" is what i thought was the "final" and "newest" version of fsound, which also got used in basically all fsound-battles since 2011 (development seems to have ended in early december 2010)

the "nftracker.zip" contains a different version of fsound tho... the version supports 4 kick and 4 snare samples from what i can tell, >comments arent supported anymore and there are some weird syntaxes in the example modules that i dont rly understand yet (also didnt rly look into it that much).
most interesting part of it is that the wav export has a heavy offset. im not sure if this is a setting you can change in your .fss or if its the default.
if this offset wldnt exist, i wld say this version is definitely more powerful than what is currently used as the "default". the weird export makes it a little meh tho...

gonna giv the versions names, so its easier to talk about them

nonexistent first fsound: v1
old fsound: v2
default fsound: v3
nftracker-included: v4

there have been a few fsound ohbs in late 2010 hosted by ant1 for developing and testing the tool:
1) nov 27: https://battleofthebits.com/arena/Battle/666/
2) nov 28: https://battleofthebits.com/arena/Battle/670/
3) dec 1: https://battleofthebits.com/arena/Battle/679/
4) dec 1: https://battleofthebits.com/arena/Battle/680/
5) dec 1: https://battleofthebits.com/arena/Battle/682/
6) dec 2: https://battleofthebits.com/arena/Battle/683/

the next one later on is from march 2014:
https://battleofthebits.com/arena/Battle/1814/

battle 1-4 seems to use v1. a version which cld only generate pulsewaves of different length

battle 5 uses v2, the bitpack talks about the new features being:
- white noise
- triplets
- tempo changing

battle 6 uses v3, which added volume control, the 2 drum samples (kick and snare) and loop points

v3 is also what got used in the 2014 battle and everything afterwards

the v4 which can be found in nftracker.zip seems like it got created on dec 5 2010, a few days after the last 2010-battle. null1024, who created the zip and the tracker, was unable to give me more information about it, he just said it was the most recent version at that point.

now this is exciting news to me. wow. another version of fsound i can exploit hehe...

but... here are some things i wanna bring up.

- v3 is backwards-compatible to v2 and v1, means it creates the same output for older .fss files
- v4 changes the output and cannot even read .fss files with >comments in them, means it is not backwards-compatible
- v4 has a very weird wav output, it also never got used in any botb battle

it feels like v4 is kind of a "beta" or "prerelease", at least it has some bugs and serious compatibility-issues with old .fss files.
therefore i wld say, using it for botb submissions shldnt be allowed and v3 shld stay the version used for battling.
the existence of v4 is still very interesting tho, and i wanted to share it with you.

have a nice day :D/
