"I'm wondering, why now the LSDJ proj format? It's kind of like the sexmodit vs. amigamod thang I suppose, with the narrower focus. But in this case, LSDJ is probably the less limited of the Gameboy options, whereas .Mod is the more limited and legacy (For the record I am not critical, and in favor of this format, I think it will be cool to pick peoples' project files)
Perhaps categories for other wares such as Nanoloop would be cool since I assume most people are using LSDJ. I for one will probably never use anything but that, but I imagine the tunes people would come out with would be quite different."
the short answer is
there was a format request thread and most of these new formats were existing requests that i compiled info for, which then became real!
the longer answer is... still pretty much what i wrote in that thread: lsdj's feature set is so specific to itself, compared to all the other gameboy tools. there is enough that makes it stand out (which only lsdj can do) that it can be its own interesting format. not nearly every gameboy entry is lsdj - surprisingly, honestly, i'm with you there, but i have my own bias since lsdj is one of the first handful of trackers i started to learn, and the first one i ever interacted with (somebody gave me a cart years before i would ever learn to track). but in general i'd say maybe 60% of gameboy major entries are lsdj, tops, and seemingly less for ohbs
the result is that we have a format where the tool can shine, where sharing project files is actually mandatory (since gameboy format takes mp3), and of course a format where folks can learn something new, potentially! which is half the fun of any new botb format!
i wouldn't be opposed to seeing nanoloop get its own format, too! somebody has brought it up a couple times and i suggested making a thread but the impetus hasn't been there yet i guess. but, i'd love to see it in the future
