I don't accept .exe files on my end due to a platform incompatibility. Even if this were circumnavigated, I still see it as a bad idea.

For whatever reason, I have an idea in my head that I'm half-tempted to create, but I'm too distracted to actually make it at the moment.

PSX was the codename for original PlayStation, it was referenced in some prerelease ads, and ended up being dropped eventually, but it got stuck in mind for many users, so they keep using it to this day, me included. If someone mentions "PS1" i tend to think of the modernized thin version, PSone.

Fun fact, later Sony made a device that was officialy called "PSX"
. It was a hybrid between PS2 console, and home cinema DVR.

some psx games did in fact stream XA audio! but it did actually have its own sound chip and sequence format and many games made use of it :)

To my best knowledge, it has only sample processing capabilities (ADSR, reverb, etc) but no means to generate the sound itself, since no HW synths/PSGs present, thus it's more akin to newer PC soundcards.

I even remember some games streaming PCM (not ADPCM, for this many games used XA file format) from regular CD-Audio tracks recorded next to data tracks (i was able to listen to them in standard CD-Audio player!)

Also i'm not sure what sequence format is shinichi talking about... Many games used sample-based sequenced synthesis, much like module formats, but it was up to game engine programmers how they implement it, that's why PSF format (the one in which you store ripped sequenced module-like PSX music) comes with machine code containing music engine, which is executed in realtime during playback.

If there's some kind of "standard", pls enlighten me ;O
I have to read more about it, it's shame not knowing all capabilities of hardware you own :---)

"no means to generate the sound itself"

Lies, it has a noise generator

Although to be more practical it's better to provide your own 28-nybble sample loops, but you could theoretically do everything using the noise gen and the reverb unit and stuff like that

But yeah, it's got a few nifty features, it even lets you at least try to do FM

These docs are more up to date and even have the formulae for reverb: http://problemkaputt.de/psx-spx.htm#soundprocessingunitspu

hey I was looking into ps1 stuff a while back, I actually found a really neat place with a lot of useful documentation, check it out! http://www.psxdev.net/downloads.html

there was a tool they used to convert midi files to some format that the ps1 could use. I already forgot the name of the tool but it's buried somewhere in the documentation(in the technical reference cd's)

actually you should really check out the technical reference cd's if you're interested in ps1 dev stuff. there' s a lot of cool stuff in there as well, like old like super low res tech demos from the mid 90s. it's really stinkin cool. anyway there's info in those docs about how to upload your own samples and convert midi(haven't tested it out but it's a lead to something)

I don't have time to look it up atm but I'll get on it when I do and report it back here. mainly wanted to shout this out rn so I don't forget about it cos wtf I've wanted to dig into proper ps1 stuff as a format for a long time(ps1 is the most emotional console imo, quite immersive by the nature of how it works. ps1 sounds are a proper trigger for those feeling too)

EDIT: nvrmnd, I went ahead and located it! check it out http://bit.ly/2mxH8bu

lol so these tools were available on ancient macos but this document provides some more intuitive insights outside of huge address tables. in ch3 they talk about the SMF2SEQ, AIFF2VAG, RAW2DA, and RAW2XA converters they used.

ANYWAY, again I haven't invested too much into this yet but wanted to pass off this stuff to whoever's interested

o, and srry 4 freudslipping '''ps1'''

Random interesting thing i found
, looks like some PSX games might have been using custom XM playback code...

Though it's not technically-inclined type of forum, some people have been trying to isolate the modules from game files, to no avail, apparently. I wasn't able to locate any more information on this during a really quick research, and i don't own this game, so i can't check it myself ATM unless i get the CD image by other means :p

Tfw the comments got pretty derailed with this PSX discussion, lmao

btw here is a old compilation that old psx cracker fellows ~~PARADOX aka PDX, Best amiga dominators aka BAD, MUPS and other cool dudes~~ did of all ~~if not most of~~ their cracktro releases; and all of them ~~i tried so far, they are a lot!~~ have amiga mod music! maybe someone could figure out how they managed to playback mod files on ps1

pdx-coll.zip

btw @MiDoRi that is a really cool discoverement there, if you would like to try something up, here is the full ps1's Driver (U) image files

regarding exes, as long as they are sandboxed i see no prob. and linux gets dosbox, too. otherwise, i'd say interpreted code like smallbasic or bbcbasic/brandybasic. At that point making an exe it's creating at the least a demo, at the most a game infrastructure on your own. Uphill but not impossible.

i think the all-nighter i spent powering through to hit the original Mar. 3rd deadline was just the thing to give my song the zhush it needed. i can get into my own little perfection loop by doting on a song for too long, and lose track of the vitality of its initial comp "sketch"

but i love it when more people can submit! oh, the drama of it all!

Hi everyone, I hit a hard snag on my upload; a file size limit of less than 8 MB?! That's not even four minutes at 320k (the only acceptable bitrate for a listenable piece of compressed music)! Does that change from challenge to challenge? Is there a limit because I am new? I realize that my 10 minute entry may be a bit much, but this was definitely a surprise. -DG

That is, unfortunately, the file size limit for the *WILD_CHIP* format. What I would recommend doing is compressing a render to fit on the site, and then linking a higher quality render in the description or in the comments. That seems to be the standard practice for very large songs around here.

haven't you ever heard of variable bitrate? saves a lot of room with no noticeable loss in quality. i usually submit in v1 with no problems, i could even use v0 if i wanted to but i don't want to waste too much of botb's bandwidth :-)

Hello Max- I do not have a readily available way to encode variable bitrate right now, but I hadn't thought of that so thank you for the suggestion. Also being frank, I can't stomach VBR; I definitely can tell a difference (mostly in cymbals and other things with a complicated decay), and it is very jarring and untrue to the original audio. -DG

even as much as i don't like cover art winning, sometimes you just can't be the best. what's important is that you tried, had fun, and you still got plenty of positive comments that should drive you forward, not hold you back. be proud of what you've accomplished instead of being mad at yourself (which solves nothing). it's fine to be modest, but you need to realize that life isn't about winning, and inherently neither is botb. it's fun to win, but it's more fun to have fun.

uh, let's not forget the fact that people make music here with the idea of submitting them to competitions. if you're truly making music purely for fun then there'd be no motivation to bring it here. I don't think it's fair to peupeu people who express frustration from losing a music competition to an image(edit: seems a bit self righteous really)

the thing is, though, the complaining in this case was not about the music losing, but about not getting gold cover art. complaining about art beating music is something i have done much in the past myself, but there is no reason to inflict self-hatred because of your relative placement in a competition.

Salty Chips 2k17 lel

Thanks Puke for another awesome compo. Some of you are looking at this website in the wrong light. For example, sqwerty, you got 255 plays, 22 favorites, 15 downloads, and a ton of comments saying, "I love this!"

And as a guy who has "won" a bunch of categories before, I'll say that the excitement from the victories is very short lived, while the friendships I've made have given me great returns. And on top of that I get to hear a bunch of rad, original music from all of you badical botbrs.

Think less of this as a competition, and more of a collective, a sister/brotherhood of an elite group of musicians who make music that is special, not just some shit for the radio/club. We are all brought here for our love of chip music, gaming, general nerdome, etc. So as my young bro sinc/shinichi pointed out, focus less on the resluts and instead revel in the excitement of sharing your music with your new digital friends and getting to hear what they've been creating to share with you.

Personally, this site is the most fun website I've ever been a member of, and I used to battle and place in the top 10's over at the late reasonstation.net, and the popular Rocbattle, as well as the obvious/typical soundcloud, soundclick, youtube, myflashstore, etc. etc. And further, I feel like all of you are my digital chip squad (is that the fleeky lingo the kids are using still?) now and I am stoked to be a part of the circle.

Did you make some rad music? Yes. Did tons of people like it and praise you for it? Yes. Is voting unpredictable AF so you shouldn't care about the voting tally? Yes and yes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a human too (and definitely not a broknerfluamstrakphff from planet zlkqxeng 7), and I can empathize with having a natural reaction of disappointment sometimes, but no need to wallow in it. Especially when there is so much positive reinforcement from your fellow botbrs about how much they enjoyed your music. You realize not everyone tries to be a musician, and so you are already getting to experience something many people in life never will. That is amazing when you think about it. And on top of that, you (most botbrs in fact) make *good* music, another thing many people can't claim.

All ya'll are great, your music is great, and I'm honored to have digitally met ya'll! In the words of the immortal Jack Septiceye, "High fives all around! *WHOOPPSSSSHHH*"

We are legion, we are botb.

you've misunderstood me, believe I'm in no need of consoling. I've won my share of majors in the past so I'm good.

there have been some frustrations expressed in irc lately regarding battleart in majors and I thought there was an extension of that going on here in the subtext.

keep in mind it's a lot easier to see things as less competitive and friendly when you're the one placing or winning. also, voting isn't so unpredictable when you engage in politics

I feel like I should comment on this..
First, I apologize for any trauma caused to anyone (Pigdevil, let's remain friends ^^) and I also agree on the fact that art shouldn't always win. But I should point out that most of the top ten entries were actually music, and GREAT music, so I'm not disappointed, and I think it was a great major (although I didn't know many ^^') and I'm definitely super excited to enter some of the big sista majors like spring tracks!
As I said in the chat, seeing your music win brings you much more proudness thant your art ever could. Trust me on that! The music is at a very high level here, and that's a real challenge that we should all crave for!

I've never placed that high in a BotB major, but I really don't care about that anymore. Like what [everyone above] said, I feel it's more about the BotB community and the friends you make/meet rather than solely aiming for first place. Also, silently over-hyping your own song to place high is something that'll for sure get you down, but I'm way past those days haha. Uh, yeah that's all I got, later all :P

My 2 cents, don't vote art higher than 4 if you don't expect it to win sometimes.

Because I have more skill with music than graphics, my votes for graphics cannot be as objective. I think this shows in the results somewhat.

Edit: I'm pretty sure I gave Galak Sea's pic all 6s or all 7s, all I can say about the work put in is if I used the whole entry time trying to make animation of any kind it would turn out shit.
