I for one congratulate the exclusion of NSF (like last year). At least for me these BOTB compos are not just about spamming the same format stuff time after time, but occasionally challenging yourself to try out something else. And nice timing too, my summer holiday starts today, so should hopefully will have time for some entries ;P

I'm new to BotB (well, I've had this account awhile but only just begun participating to battles), and I would've liked to try my hand at a major NSF battle. I can use different formats (and I plan to) for this compo but since some relatively common formats are included (like MIDI or S3XMODIT, and even SPC if you consider the fact you have to go through IT first for that one), I thought NSF/NSF+ would fit nicely with the rest.

Oh well, maybe next time.

Hey, is it OK if I use the appropriate ROM formats instead of the rips in certain cases? I might like to do some weird PCM mixing for Mega Drive (which won't translate to the VGM format well w/o bloating the crap out of it), and from my understanding .hes is a terrible format.

I've been seeing if I can miraculously get some SPC-700 code to work. Turns out I'll need to pray harder.

And, yes, Summer Chips focuses more on younger formats. Mayhaps we could have a big NSF battle at an opposite time of the year from FamiCompo. What say you, botbrs?

I got a case of Mario Paint curiosity... actually, there are a few other music makers for the SNES that I can think of. Athena had one with Dezaemon so you could create custom in-game music for your games, Tradewest had one in Fun 'n Games (that one had a "note knocker", allowing for sharps and flats), Nintendo had one with Mario Paint, and the last one is Ongaku Tsukuru: Kanadeeru from ASCII.

Hey... XMSNES isn't the only one with a broken link. Both ShroomTool and ShroomPlayer have broken links. :( However, it appears you got that resolved via the Mario Paint Guide... but the .shi file (not .sho, .shi) doesn't look very optimized.

I got mildly curious about those two... plus, I can't help but think I can actually make one by copying the music bytes from a savestate... I obviously don't have ZSNES, but with a bit of a hex lookup, maybe I can replicate one. And I can just simply play back the music by copying the data into a save state and load it on the spot. ;)

The .sho files don't look too bad from here. It has a simple "shro" to start, then thirty two bytes of Title + Author. Then there is a filename for the instrument set used... then it's off to the music data. I guess I could make one if I wanted to... but I have to hunt down my own music data. Nothing a hex comparison can't fix. ^_^

zanzan, Awave studio seems to play (and render!) MMF FM tunes. I tried it out and it seems to work. (Although it needs to convert stuff to waveforms first and takes its time to do so.)

Now please give me the bounty once you get it up and running. <:D

In case someone didn't notice, I made a mod to sho converter. It takes in a regular 4 channel mod and exports a ShroomPlayer compatible .sho file, which can be then injected to a ZSNES savestate.

Mario Paint doesn't suck so much anymore!

No more entries from me for this compo. I am not producing a Wildchip entry... I would have considered MIDI, but I do not trust the format due to its sheer inconsistency. Maybe I'll experiment with making a PC-Engine tune through MML... and maybe one day, I'll make a "SuperMML" SPC sound driver, which handles .mml music and sound effects (and, if it absolutely has to either by user choice or insufficient SPC700 memory, it can support real-time note input, which will result in undumpable SPC files). I might also make it2mml via Python... I hope to vote soon!

I'm not completely certain, personally... for the formats that I definitely can't play on the computer, the MP3s will have to do. The format that I trust the least despite being able to play it... kind of... is the MIDI format due to sheer inconsistency. I failed to vote on one AY entry (somehow the .sndh file failed to load on Audio Overload), all three HES entries (all three .vgm files struck out, failing to play on Audio Overload, apparently being made in Deflemask, which explains the format), all Mario Paint entries, all Adlib entries (I could have used DOSBox, but I think I'll just stick with the MP3s, as playback stinks on my end), and all .sapx2 entries (I was hesitant due to knowing that this was a music hack, though I just tested one... and they work in stereo mode on Audio Overload, so at least I can go for it...)... plus, on the SPC files, on the few MP3s that I heard, for at least one of them I thought I heard the .wav to .mp3 exports from the source module files...

Stereo Pokey tunes play just fine with e.g. Xmplay & in_sap plugin. For some of the other mentioned formats MP3 is really the only "sensible" option, like Adlib and Mario Paint. With Adlib you could of course take the tracker and listen the file there, but playback plugins usually do the job quite poorly (too many different fileformats). Also for example my AY tracks sounds pretty crappy with Audio Overload compared to the MP3 (which was recorced straight from the Arkos Tracker). Audio Overload doesn't seem to be able to pull off the bass envelopes and stuff. So not the best playback option. Here's what I personally do with the votes: get both the "sourcefile" and the MP3 file. For obscure fileformat (where there's no decent player available) MP3 is enough. I'd rather hear the tracks as intended than some broken version.

Don't use Audio Overload.
Jack of all trades, master of none, and is generally pretty damn inaccurate with most of the formats it supports.

Are there going to be trophies for all categories just like Winter Chip (and the first Summer Chip), or were only the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place supposed to get a trophy?

I thought it might be more appropriate for a HUGE EPIC BATTLE like this. :)
