What I was thinking was something like 'click the banana' and there would be a handful of images to choose from before you fill the signup form. I dunno. I don't like all these empty accounts . . .

There is absolutely nothing wrong with captchas for new account sign up. The only time they are evil is when they are used all the time for everything. I think it is a very very very very good idea to have them for new account creation.

the real problem is recaptcha (owned by google - interesting to you if u are a lvl 100 internet paranoiac like me) and similar services which are using users input to do things like digitize books (harmless enough, right.?.?.) and street signs/door numbers (maybe less so ;)

Often I put something wrong there because recaptcha doesn't usually verify the second word, haha. Sure, it's not exactly a good thing, but eh. Having us enter in house numbers is a bit dodgy.
