Is this viable?

I had about 11 old entries that I wanted to tag with their sources, but unless I had previously posted on them, I couldn't do it without bumping the thread to the recent postings. (I decided to do it anyway, I may live in infamy for this.)

It'd be nice if I could do this more ninja-like and not have to bother people who want to know what's really happening recently.

Also, new feature requests still don't seem to appear in recent postings. Bumping this from battleofthebits.com?

goluigi, the issue was with the initial post. Once I had bumped it once from .com it was posted.

Well, you had a link to your sources in your profile, but I didn't know you did that until you just told me about it. This is precisely why I like to have a source link directly attached to the entry.

You've shared source links on IRC in the past, but honestly if I had known they were all available like this I would probably have looked at every single one of them. There's a big gap between just being interested in seeing the source, and being so interested that I want to request that you dig up a link for me. If someone is interested in the source, I want them to be able to know it's available and find it without having to ask or search for it.

I never particularly liked bumping my own entries just to post source, but I consider it worthwhile to be able to provide this information, so I do it anyway.

I really don't think rainwarrior had any malicious intent to spam the frontpage with bumps though! I personally like when people decides to post sources in the tracks threads (for nerdy/technical reasons as usual), but there should indeed be an option to disable bumping so this kind of bumptastic scenario are limited.

integrated source uploading has already been discussed (sorcerist points)

perhaps being able to edit your description would be nice for sources or typos or if you forgot to add some information. then, we would have to consider adding descriptions to OHBs (since they have none currently) but that would change the whole way OHBs are archived.

adding dropbocks links to a description isnt a great alternative to being able to upload source

because dropbox sucks and you will probably delete everything in a year when you run out of space / change your emaill adress / decide to use puush / decide to use ftp

seen in other discussions botb is an "ARCHIVE" and a good archive isnt built from links to dropbox

i know this is a thread about "sage" but since being able to post dropbox links is the only justification for it presented maybe the pros/cons of posting dropbox links are relvant?

Yes, please let it be an OPTION because I do consider updates to an entry as current botb activity.

Also, haha ant1 totally didn't notice that your SAGE post was relevant

i always considered posting the source under my songs as fairly harmless. i wasn't concerned about it taking up too much space over the front page because there's lots of space up there!

i can understand for bulk uploads that it might flood the front page, but as long as there isn't an option to post a source to a song (and dropbox viability aside), i don't see any harm in putting a source under your song.

さげ is an interesting suggestion. I didn't know 4chan had that (I stay away). So it's a text trigger that suppresses a bump? That sounds like a great way to do it. Does it get removed from the text on post?

you put it in the email field i believe

posts here don't have an email field so i guess botb would have to find it (and optionally remove it) from the text

I don't think a sage would be the best solution because what if I wanted to be notified?

notified about what, though? if the person posting doesn't want the entire website to be notified then that is his or her decision.

if you want to get updates on the escapades of johnny chiptune check his profile every now and again!!

SAGE at the beginning of a post could be detected and stripped easily. or at the end? SAGE

to not alienate anybody who isn't in the know (it'd be a tad difficult for somebody who's never been on the site before to know that "sage" causes a thread bump not to trigger, even if they're familiar with the term), i think there should be a checkbox or something next to the save comment button that says "bump thread" and is by default checked.
