I hope that entirely random means entirely random, and that we will be doing Channel F, tia and DOOM wad OHCS.

I do wonder if fsound and pandatracker still exist. 0_______x

Individually, a lot of formats have very small percentages of appearing. Over three randomly selected OHCs, however, a format with a probability of less than 1% has a ~30% chance of being selected. Many of these formats are formats that participants have never done before. Maybe this is asking a bit much of participants?

I would like to try new formats, as long as I've got at least a day or two to prepare so I actually know what I'm doing. This competition would be a cool way to expand some horizons :y

I'd enter, but only if you can guarantee there's gonna be no visual arts battles (like pixel, svg, DOOM or ASCII art) at all. Otherwise, count me out.

The formats could be reduced to those that all participants have done before. Thusly, that list would be modified with each tier. Imma think on this one. We've definitely discussed tournaments before!

Also, it could be made that everyone can pick their own hour within a certain period of time. Then have voting follow for the next day.

Watch: Panda, AHX, and Channel F will be the formats, and everything will go to hell. ;3

I don't even know how anyone'd make a Panda track, what with no one having a copy of PandaTracker.

AHX is fine now, since Hively got a Windows port. Used to be a biiiitch [you had to deal with setting it up in UAE/go get Amiga Forever, or you had to run AROS in VirtualBox to use Hively].

It'd be silly to see only 0.x% formats though.

possible, but so unlikely that you'd probably just reselect

Also, if it wasn't for that one mod16k OHC we did a few weeks ago, it'd be at 0%!

will where people are initially grouped be random as well?

i really like the idea of leaving the preliminary parts to luck since it can seriously test a competitor's versatility. not only in the aspect of learning various song types on the fly, but also keeping in mind who is voting on their songs (and perhaps pandering to them >:))) )

Alright, lemme go over a rundown how I would see this going...

There needs to be some kind of announcement period. This is the time everyone signs up. I'm thinking anywhere from a week to a month in advance.

Once it starts, the days alternate between a battle and voting.

BotB will run heats with a maximum number of 7 BotBrs. The number of BotBrs that sign up will determine the number of heats. Anyone who places in the top three will progress to the next round of heats. I think this works out to a final heat of 6 everytime but could be wrong there.
Lack of entry == disqualification.
*I think only the winner progressing makes it all too short and not as exciting.

The battle day is a 24 hour period where you can choose which hour you create your entry. There is a list of participants and only participants are told the format when they start their hour. The format will be revealed to all when voting starts the second 24 hour period day.

Now, on choosing which format occurs for each battle; two ways to go here . . .
1) find all common formats that BotBrs in the heat have submitted and randomize equally within that list. This could result in no format, in which case the format that the most BotBrs in that heat have entered gets picked.
2) kfaraday's idea of a weighted randomization based on how many entries each format has in the entire BotB archive which could leave many scrambling in a very rare instance
Number one is my instinct, but I just want what would ultimately bring the most compelling drama for the tourney.

Bonus Points: increase multiplier by binary numbers each tier starting with 1
grand winner needs an additional badge/trophy of some sort too

it's also important to implement the late time penalties to final scores because i'm pretty sure that concept never got put in place maybe

Ignore me. Tournaments are an old concept round here and I never thought of using OHBs for the tiers before. It's a bunch simpler than making Pit Fights first. :P

Not counting wildchip and allgear, I can do NES, SNES, any size module (8k-64k based off of what you have on here), and C64 the best. Adlib is excruciatingly slow for me to test due to speed difficulties. I think AHX would require an Amiga emulator (although it's not impossible to do, I am unwilling to do so). MOD is possible on my end, but I have concerns about testing and rendering reliability on my end. AYM requires a computer emulator that would use the sound chip, and depending on the results, I may or may not have technical difficulties. This includes exporting to the file format. Channel F is most likely a no-go on my end, and I have no clue if an emulator exists for the Mac. Deflemask is a big no-go on my end because of a platform incompatibility (that requires an Intel Mac, and I'm on a PPC Mac). Doom WAD is my least familiar format, especially when... if I can remember correctly... it is a map editor format? I have no clue on fsound. Game Boy is possible via a Game Boy emulator as long as I can correctly rig my emulator to properly handle the recording when I use Wiretap Pro. I also found some trackers that I could experiment with. I have no clue with HES, not being experienced with MML, although I suppose it's possible. I can code HTML, although depending on how fancy you get, chances are I might not be able to properly view them. I'm not feeling too good on Mario Paint due to technical difficulties on my end. I can create a Mario Paint song fine via the SNES emulator, but there are some technical difficulties on my end relating to distribution (I could in theory distribute a .srm file, which is a save file for Mario Paint. However, I'm much less confident about trying a .sho file, and so far I have yet to be able to properly import a .sho file into my emulator.). For rendering, I would just play the song direct off of the SNES emulator. I have an ax to grind with the MIDI format due to playback inconsistency, and I am especially nervous with rending my MIDI file to MP3. NSF with expansions have mixed results for me, although I have an online player just in case that should handle all scenarios. I can do NTRQ since I have an NES emulator. I have no clue on Panda Tracker. I guess I can do Renoise, but the only warning I have is with the VSTs due to a possible platform incompatibility. SAP will be a toughie because the tracker has a platform incompatibility, and I have no idea how well an emulator will be able to produce a .sap file. SAPx2 is a definite no-go since that's a hack most likely specific to one tracker. Sega Genesis is a no-go so far due to a platform incompatibility with existing trackers. I'm rather nervous about actually going for this one anyways... Sunvox is a no-go on my end because that requires an Intel Mac, which I do not have. Atari 2600 is a no-go on my end due to emulator speed problems, which messes up sound output and results in rendering difficulties. I don't think I can properly produce a VIC-20 song, although if there's a tracker out there, I could theoretically give it a shot. And the ZX Spectrum Beeper requires a ZX Spectrum emulator, which to me is another toss-up... so... on most of these, perhaps I can give them a shot, but these are pretty much no good for me to quickly learn in an hour, especially on my type of computer.

That's why I was suggestion formats should be chosen based on what formats the BotBrs in the battle have done before.

Having said all that, KungFuFurby, I don't think you'll have much of a problem entering this! It does suck that a lot of things only work on Intel-based Macs tho.
Puke's suggestion should keep you from running into issues.
Also, I'm pretty sure Beepola runs on Mac as well? I keep forgetting to test that...

That's a no-go for running Beepola on my computer.. The reason is because that type of method works much better with WINE, and I don't think there's a good working version of WINE for PowerPC. But perhaps I could just make a song natively... I've found emulators that could in theory work on my computer before, and perhaps it won't be too hard to do so (although I think I know where to go if I have technical difficulties). I also gave .sap a lookup and determined it is a piece of raw 6502 code to some extent. Thus, I could in theory code something using a hex editor... and Wikipedia has given me some sound register information. Maybe sometime later I'll produce some test files once I find the necessary utensils.

would give you a lot more utility than a hex editor.

The pack B00daw made for Channel F is kinda interesting, basically using macros in assembly language to contruct the song. Might be a good example for that king of thing.

I actually have WLA DX on my end, although I'll admit I have failed to produce anything decent in terms of SNES ROMs. At best, I've done a rather poor automated music test. I have found myself a ZX Spectrum emulator and will be testing some native music creation applications.

there is no publically available software that can play fsound and i don't have it. so unless one of you have it then you either need to get someone to write an fsound interpreter (v. easy for version 1 of the format) or just not do it

i imagine the situation is even worse for pandatracker
