context: Rendergate 2013 http://battleofthebits.com/arena/Entry/dogclub.xm/8822/

it gave me the idea that maybe original composers (and maybe admins?) should always have the right to replace a render by others if they are unsatisfied with it...

instead of the first render being the definitive render Of All Times, maybe the first render could be just the best render that was got so far, with the potential for original composer and/or admin to replace it as they see fit.

on the other hand it doesn't really matter, since an XM file is an XM file and you cannot dictate exactly how it will be played back. if someone has rendered your XM file with an accurate XM player then that should be an accurate render. i like about these formats (see also: midi) that you cannot dictate exactly how they are played back

but i will put the idea out there. and just imagine how strobe would feel if i renderd one of his tracks with HARDPANZ?!!

How Does This Make You Feel?

24 hours gives you enough time to go to sleep and wake up the next day to render it, and yeah, during this period you can upload and re-upload your own render as many times as you like, with no interference from others.

Admins can still replace your songs later if necessary. I dunno, this all seems fairly sensible to me. Instead of raising a stink about it after, the offended rendered party can just make their own render and ping an admin on IRC. xterm in particular has been very accomodating about this in the past.

I don't really see what the problem is, other than people choosing an loud/unproductive way to address the issue, instead of going to someone who can fix it.

If someone renders your track, it's because they want people to hear it, and you should not be offended by this. If their render isn't good enough for your standards, make your own and get it uploaded. Not a big deal. If you need to announce it, just a simple post like "MP3 reuploaded with proper fades" on the entry is enough, no need to insult the person who cared enough about your track to make it more accessible.

If what you really want is your entries not to have renders at all, well, this is a foolish goal and you should relieve yourself of it.

i was under the impression that the track owner could change a render whenever they wanted, or is that only when the render is theirs?

I think the system is fine the way it is for the reasons kfaraday and rainwarrior mentioned.

i see

is it 24 hours before anyone other than composer can upload a render? it seems long enough

i couldn't hear anything wrong with slimeball's render anyway. i was maybe more worried about sitautions where someone completely ballses up the render. maybe those don't happen or admins can fix them when they do Or Something
