Allow us to change our names in Battle of the Bits, it's a feature we all want and need.

this has been brought up many times. personally i’d support it but i feel like this isn’t exactly an option based on how the site is set up.

pain to implement + you can make a new account = not happening unfortunately

also, you’ve just joined! you can quickly start over with a new account, whereas someone with more progress would probably be wanting a new name more haha

yeah this has been brought up before! unfortunately, it'd be extremely difficult to implement such a system, given the site's extensive history that it needs to cover (been around 21 years!) and also potentials for abuse and whatnot.

i WOULD like such a system, and if one was available back in 2016 or so i wouldn't have had to make a new account (likewise with when i rejoined in 2021), but the reality is it'd be a very complicated thing to implement. it'd require under the hood changes on how accounts are handled, and depending on which solution you go for it can either result in dead links, be ripe for abuse from the wrong ppl, or just be a pain to implement.

retro does bring up a good point: you've just recently joined, you level up fast on the site for the early levels, so you can just make a new account with the desired username. just keep in mind you can't change it so choose carefully!

the infrastructure of botb is not designed for username changes.
the obvious first: Bandcamp and YouTube uploads are featuring the username and I'm sure if the feature to change ur name wld exist on the site, it wouldn't take long until people also ask for it to get changed on bc and yt as well.
we also run into a struggle with the CC license here because as soon as you upload something under ur original acc name, as far as I understand the license, that name has to get used for sharing the music since it is what it was uploaded as.

then there are also the vote and finalpacks which are permanently saved zip files which feature ur username in them. same applies to vote logs and tally sheets which are permanent txt files that are generated.
changing ur username once might already be confusing when someone tries to follow along with the vote log of an older battle... but now imagine a few accounts who changed their names several times in the past. maybe even reused someone else's name??
would you disallow usernames used before? what about the profile URL? would old links to ur profile become invalid? or would they redirect to your profile? do we need a "history of names" on someone's profile similar to avatars?

those are the few examples I can think about from the top of my head right now.
I'm sure there's more that I can't even think of atm.

tldr: username changes won't be a thing without a heavy refactor of the whole website, otherwise the side effects will be annoying to deal with for everyone, especially puke7.

on the other hand, you cld just..... stop whining and create a new account.

you can just appease the masses by adding a display name that's cosmetic you don't gotta reflect it on the other sites if you don't wanna

idea: Make a nickname system like the avatar system, and make it cost boons to change your name. you can switch names like avatars
