Fairly often, I notice that slugs get overtaken in the main channel by multiple conversations in happening in chat, especially on busier days.

I know not everyone makes a big deal out of slugs and is happy to just quickly post results, but a lot of other hosts put extra effort in to make the slug process feel special, and it gives space for the entrars and vortists to discuss and appreciate each entry. It's a shame to see those moments get steamrolled.

In addition, it's also not fair to expect everyone else to pause their convos, especially when there are multiple battles happening back to back - there's a lot of great and active leadup convos and collaborative stuff going on that have a right to the space as well.

I think it would be nice to be able to pop into a separate channel dedicated to the slug rollout/discussion. (and since battles shouldn't be scheduled at the same time, sluts should never overlap anyways)

Thoughts?

this comes up every once in a while and it basically goes down to this:

botbs official channel is the irc. the discord is just bridged to it. the botb bot lives on irc. the log on ohbs is logged from this irc.
an additional channel sounds like you're talking about the discord. which brings some things up: we wld need a second irc channel too, a second bridge and another instance of the bot to log that channel as well.

so much about the infrastructure.
apart from that I also think that it's part of the charme that everything is happening at once.
I also think that if you fail to praise an entry enough in chat during sluts. you can just... post a comment later.

note: the botb discord isn't really the official chat so the simplest solution would be for ppl to move to a diff channel in the server if they wanna talk while slugs are happening

Problem is, the BotB IRC bot uses the BotB channel bridge with Discord to log the XHB chat, you can't really just move it to a different channel, not without breaking things like that.

I personally have no issues with concurrent conversations, it just is the norm on BotB.

I think *most days* concurrent conversations aren't an issue. But today in particular, they were. A day in which several people commented on the higher-than-usual traffic, and that slugs were consistently running into other battles partially due to conversations being derailed. And threading discontinuous conversations was difficult when replying to earlier messages often involved sifting through hundreds of messages over the course of just an hour.

I'm not saying there isn't a charm to the classic mono-channel, and I'll admit that I myself was enjoying and participating in the chaos. And again, most days aren't an issue, so high-traffic strain might not be a priority. But even if a solution is complex, I think it could be of benefit to the quality of discourse, and hence to the long-term development of the community.

Ahh, I understand. I thought the irc hook was the other way around. I understand the technical complications now, and if most people are unbothered I don't mean to rock any boats. Apologies.

Your logic wasn't wrong going off of Discord, just that from a technical standpoint it is hooked up to an IRC channel.

I have a long enough history with Battle of the Bits that I actually remember when it was exclusively on IRC. I used to use the IRC side for OHBs myself. Also, on Discord specifically, I sometimes use the search function outright in these kind of cases, as sometimes I can successfully hunt them down. Discord's search function for me can sometimes help decrease the amount of hunting down I have to do for looking up results, so to me, that's a nice modern convenience that I don't explicitly remember as well on IRC... well, in my case, I usually used Mibbit back then (now discontinued as of 2024).
