also called Mega Maker, it’s pretty self explanatory.
https://megamanmaker.com/

Going through and seeing these ZQuest entries, i was reminded of this program the other day. Essentially, picture Mario Maker for Mega Man, but wayyyy more feature heavy and interesting.
It has content from all the classic games, as well as some other lesser-known and even demade content from the non-NES style games as well.

Installation is also free.
Levels are saved as a .mmlv format file in your local appdata and can actually be copied and saved into other people’s files, so that would be submission file type. Also, you can use this site
for visualization and/or rendering of levels, as it has a built-in .mmlv viewer to let you see the stages and download an image file of them.

I dunno, but seeing all these mapping formats i think this could be pretty sick, especially considering the simplicity of the program.

as a fellow mega maniac, i think this would be a great format! we already have zquest and smw; having stuff like mega man maker would be in line with those other formats. plus, it gives me an excuse to reinstall mega man maker lol

two questions are the concept of allowing custom .nsf importing and text editing.

by replacing the songs in the game’s directory with your own nsf files you can import custom music, but if you don’t have the custom files it’ll still play fine, but with the music it’s supposed to play. maybe this could be included in submission as .zip submissions with the .nsf renamed properly in the files so you know what song to replace.
second is text editing. it’s optional but allows you to text edit the .mmlv file and reorder tile layers, etc. however with the most recent update it’s not really necessary anymore, though.

could botb be entering its game dev / level editor era??

also this is making me wonder what the state of NES castlevania and metroid modding is these days...

holy shit mega man maker has a built-in interactive tutorial??

this looks real legit, I'm definitely into it. so much content to choose from, pulled from so many games!! this one and SMBX2 both seem like they'd be a blast to play with. new game dev formaaaaaats!

oh yeah, Mega Man Maker is super user friendly and fun to use. i think i’ve been spoiled by it - using actual map editors seems so difficult now lol

been playing alot of mega man maker recently and remembered this thread. a mega man maker format would be so cool.

collab entries would be super fun to make because of the built in co-op stuff, being restricted to only use certain assets from specific games as a bitpack would really help just make a level (i find i always get stuck with levels by trying to make them look pretty and not gross), or bitpacks could get super creative with specific bosses or characters to make use of. damn i fucking love this format idea.

oh yeah, that’s true! the built-in level collaboration feature is really good.

one issue though is you have to make an account in order to create levels. even if you don’t set up an email and connect to the servers, you still need a username and password, which is linked to the level, showing the username when you click the level in the menu. this could obviously be an issue for xhb entries (which are anonymous), but i do have a workaround.
for xhbs, have a BotB account registered on the platform and link the username/password on the lyceum. that way, levels would be anonymous and could be submitted without any bias. also, the levels could all be uploaded on the BotB account so other people can play them online on Mega Man Maker, and as a result could bring some more attention to this website :)

As much as the idea of having a community BotB account sounds like a cute/swell idea, I do also see it very quickly becoming chaos for a multitude of reasons (bad faith actors either spamming entries onto the account or the account otherwise being mis-flagged, or perhaps even correctly flagged depending on the popularity of the format, as spam). That's not even getting into how messy it would be to keep track of that many entries or anything of that sort. So, at least to me, it's probably better to either way to see if there might be a non-account version released or, otherwise, just not picking up the format.

i’m sure there’s a way to use text editing to create one. if not i think it’d be easy to whip up some kind of converter/header editor tool to remove author data and replace it with something else.

we also could just not register an email on the BOTB account and then as a result no levels could be uploaded with it. levels are saved locally so people could do whatever they wanted with it on their own devices without it cluttering the cloud (because there is no cloud)

if you couldn’t tell i’m pretty set on having this be added or at least viable on the site

Guys, just make your megaman maker username "BOTB" and then a bunch of random numbers (longer than a phone number)

no one's going through the effort of memorizing 20 numbers just to know that retrokid uploaded a level

i just tested this and you don't need an account. you can just type in a name and password and click "continue offline". your levels are saved in your AppData folder (C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\MegaMaker\Levels)

oh perfect, then. i guess one would just have to log out before entering xhbs. for majors it wouldn’t matter
