want to prevent notifs from any certain user from appearing in my alerts screen. john favourite is hogging the list by favouriting like 50 songs and its getting really annoying. love the positivity! but rather too much.

i was thinking this same thing today for the same reasons (also love the positivity but not really interested in a fav unless you actually checked it out and liked it, sorry..)

... :thinks: i could also turn tag alerts back on if i notif blocked kleeder,,,

I think this is not a good approach.

what makes more sense to me is an option on the alert page to filter by alert type and a settings page where you can decide which alert type shld also trigger the alert notification.
that way you wldnt block out single users and instead cld still filter out big piles of "spamlike" activities.

my biggest concern with blocking alerts from specific users is that it cld lead to awkward one-sided user experiences or lower the user interactions

i have a friend here in my city that was notified by twitter (years before getting rebranded as "xitter") that he was behaving as a bot (for posting an insane amount of tweets per day), but that was from pure entusiasm -:on the street with people he behaves exactly the same! xD

@mirageofher interesting if notifications could be grouped somehow, so we wouldnt get that flooded there! :)

@kleeder But in this case it's not an alert type problem, it's a spammer problem. I want to get notifications about favs, but not when they come from someone who clearly didn't give them in good faith.

i think i agree with both here tbh

it would be nice to have a way to filter your alerts page and not get notified for specific alert types you might not care about but it also wouldn't be a bad idea to maybe have a way to add specific users to that filter; that way you'd still get the alerts, it just wouldn't spam you with notifications

the notif grouping idea that nitro brought up might be viable as well, if i understand it correctly; maybe favorite alerts from specific users could be grouped into a single alert, much the same way as alerts for comments on your profile

I don't mean to uninvitedly point out the obvious, but maybe the thing to do is just tell them to stop spam faving and to rethink what they want to do in this website.

ya it would be silly to implement a feature just to pave the way for site mechanic abuse haha

I think John Favorite should get a special ailment or something that reduces the amount of alerts; maybe consolidate all the favorites they do per day into a single alert at midnight that's like "John Favorite is back at it! He's favorited 220 times today!" (sorta similar to what nitro. recommended)

That way we still know of his streak while also reducing alert clutter (and, incase anyone decides to take the route of john favorite, they will also get the special ailment, keeping said clutter low).

Of course, I realize it's probably more of a hassle to implement a new badge with special functionality than it is to just let users turn off a website's process that you can already turn off in the source in the websites settings, but I feel like that this would be the better approach going forward than the obvious problems that come with being able to block all alerts from a user you disagree and/or are annoyed with.
