Greetings! And welcome to

So, I talked to puke about hosting a tournament on Battle of the Bits in old school fashion and he gave me the green light! It will be handled solely with bulletin posting and direct messaging. I joined a couple myself and they worked successfully this way. We won't be earning any points or such, but if you're not worried about that, then great!

How does it work?

Here, you'll be able to experience 1 vs 1 battles, also known as duels or pit fights, as displayed in the Main Brackets

In order to join, you must choose one of these characters to represent you:

Chipist Characters (all taken!)

Mixist Characters (all taken!)

If you choose one of the Chipist Characters, you'll be a chipist and only work with chipist formats. If you choose one of the Mixist Characters, you'll be a mixist and only work with mixist formats.

Bitpack rules

I talked to puke about if duelists are allowed to arrange each other's songs and their own in their tournament entries. He said it's cool, as long as every participant is on board with the idea.

Those who lose on the first two rounds will be able to duel at least one more time in an alternative bracket.

Chipists:

kilowatt64 (Night Owl)
Yung Gontenks (Razer Porcupine)
damifortune (Viola)
kleeder (Baskerville)
Jakerson (Cool Kid)
RadamLee (Arial)
Blue_Christmas (Stabby Draggy)
birdrun (The Tough Guy)

Mixists:

mirageofher (Aismo)
Dunehawk (Waterbuck Villager)
02FD (Brewitch)
Minerscale (Oldie the Umarell)
Viraxor (Batthew)
Tex (Succulenton)

wtf tex this is so cool

my feelings about this are very confusing tho, because i wld love to see a full implementation of the concept on-site and i wld also love to hav the entries on-site, if we already choose chipist/mixist-related formats.

questions i have: how is voting done? how does choosing of formats work within the class? are there no other platforms/websites which make you manage tournaments like this (it feels like there shld, and technical assistance like that helps)? tournaments/pit fights on botb when? why is the title of the chipist char list also "mixist characters"? do we just have "unlimited" time for the first round or is that also a week? or are u talking about some kind of "warmup" entry that I submit without counting to the actual duels? because u say the pairings will be announced afterwards...
and also, later rounds will have bitpacks too, right? you're just not sharing them yet..?

i cant say 100% if im in, but before others take all spots, i will say i take chipist + baskerville

We already have 3 Chipists (tentatively 4) and 2 Mixists.

Answering all of kleeder's questions that may also clarify things for other people.

Me too. Hopefully the concept can be fully implemented on-site someday. But in the meantime, we gotta use what we have. I guarantee that things done this way are still really fun and thrilling, though!

Voting is done in separated bulletins. You can read the full rules here

On choosing of formats within the class: the whole class will work with the same format on each round. The formats are chosen with my personal hunch, admittedly, since there are formats that definitely won't work here.

Challonge
was used to manage one of the tournaments I was part of and it's a popular platform. Maybe it would be helpful, but from what I heard you can't give brackets a customizable look.

XD only puke would know.

Oops, I accidentally swapped the names in the Chipist Char list. It's fixed now.

All rounds are a week. Character theme submissions happen before the rounds so that they are ready to be reinterpreted when the rounds starts.

Later round bitpacks are merely doing what you already did in earlier rounds. If you, Baskerville, is paired with Miss Impact on Round 1, you'll have to include both your theme and Miss Impact's theme in your entry. If you win and is paired with The Tough Guy on Round 2, you'll have to include both your theme and The Tough Guy's theme in your entry.

I am 100% in, I wanna get beaten up by whoever will be my opponent. I need that in my life.

just another little question.
I know that I am extremly limited in time for just over a week at the end of September. it shld still be doable for me to submit something, in case there's a round happening in that time. but I still want to make sure and ask: what happens if a participant doesn't meet the deadline, maybe doesn't react at all anymore? I assume it wld mean an autowin for the other person. but what if I am late by x minutes or hours or days? is there a system of penalty for being late? or am I disqualified instantly if I don't meet the deadline on the spot?

Your assumption is correct. If a duelist doesn't submit an entry and I don't hear from them in 24 hours after the deadline, they'll lose by default and their opponent wins by default. I hope 24 hours is a sensible timeframe. I'll need to hear from the latist during that time and give an extension, depending on circumstances. Voting time will be reduced to fewer days as a result, but no big deal.

Other than that, there is no penalty system for being late. Duelists who submitted on time will be free to revise their entries and resubmit them in case someone is late.

Oh, now is a good time to clarify that this is not a single elimination tournament, but a double elimination one with a few twists. So, you won't be kicked out immediately, as you say. If you lose on Round 1, you'll be matched up against other people who also lost in the Tincan Brackets
. This way, everyone can duel at least twice (but do your best in all of your duels anyhow!).

That would be cool. But anyone can compete, which is also cool.

I'd recommend anyone to join a music tournament, at least once. There's something uniquely personal about listening to your theme in your opponent's entry. It can make you feel like you're literally facing each other on the battlefield. It's thrilling.

We need 3 more people (1 Chipist and 2 Mixists) to compete for an even 16. A new Chipist Character and three new Mixist characters are up for grabs.

Hey, it's me again!

@ current duelists: please, liēk this post if you agree that the entry period for character themes starts on Sunday, September 3 and ends on Sunday, September 10. I'll set an external countdown so that you can always check the exact time you'll have left to submit your entry.

We have 3 duelist slots left. The last duelists can join now. Or they can still join during character theme period if they're quick to select their characters and submit their entries on time. But they cannot join after the period for character themes is over.

If we happen to not have the last 3 duelists by then, we'll proceed with the tournament anyway, which means 3 people will advance to Round 2 by default. Better to continue it this way than to remain paralyzed by indecision.

However, YOU, who is not a duelist yet, can prevent these 3 people from advancing so easily!

you said technically I can work on it right away without it being the official period time. but what's the exact ruleset? shld it be a full song or just a sketch of a melody or theme?

It is the latter! You can use whatever tools you want for your character theme.

There are no rules for what your character theme should be like.

The longer your character theme is, the more material both you and your opponent will have to reference. 50 seconds is a great length.

However, I'd say catchiness is more important than length. Heat Man's Theme
is only 25 seconds long. And yet, Savaged Regime made this incredible entry
by combining it with his character of choice, Ground Man
, which is 37 seconds long if you don't count the melody repeating afterwards.

One of you asked me if your character theme can have a specific style.

Your character theme can have any style you want! It can be a cutscene/visual novel character theme, a level theme associated with your character who is the boss from that level, a battle theme against your character, etc.

It's up to you.

also , while nsf+ is a nice format choice for a start, i also hope it gets a little more limiting further in. getting melodies and themes to sound epic and good with big channel chips is "kinda easy", but i wld love to see what peepz make out of 2 or 3 channel chips!! hi. i decided to do a video series where i review the rounds of this tournament and give my personal opinion on things.
i did the pre-round in one go as a warm-up: https://youtu.be/2arbjiflo8M
it will probably get more interesting when the actual battle rounds go public

So far I received entries from 11 people: kleeder, Viraxor, birdrun, Jakerson, Dunehawk, RadamLee, Blue_Christmas, damifortune, mirageofher, kilowatt64 and Dippy (Yung Gotenks).

EDIT: I am extending the deadline to Tuesday, September 19th, 9 PM EST for 02FD and Minerscale. I'd rather everyone get their entries in than penalize people for being late.

If anyone wants to revise their entry while I'm waiting for them, I'm fine with that.

Files will be up for voting shortly after that.

the variety of chip formats and that not everyone is super skilled in all of them is part of the fun here imo.
only staying to the 5 super common chip formats feels boring af too

take it as a learning experience and challenge. the worst thing that cld happen is that your entry isn't perfect.

a different approach to avoid this situation wld be to look at the pairings and give the duelists a format they both have a badge in.

still hoping for something like vic20, tia or aym in the next round, the chipist formats so far have been way too unlimiting

my approach is just to start with out of the box FM instruments with whatever tool that are close enough to something you'd like to use and tweak them to your liking. Sometimes fun from scratch too, but helps to have some kind of starting point, for me. Defle and Furnace both have at least a basic set under their instruments folders to get you started, if helpful

I'm gonna ask that we don't have a sample pack going forward for Mixist because I already feel limited in my choice of melody and such. This makes using a sample pack extra difficult because you have to cater to both the sample pack's style and the style of the two melodies you're combining. Most OHBs don't do samplepack+theme for this reason I feel

Sorry, 02FD, but it's too late to make such a request. I already received an entry from Viraxor, who used this sample pack just fine. Plus, there are 66 samples in here. They can be used for a lot of genres of music if your imagination allows it.

The fact that you have to think about both the melodies and the sample pack usage is why this battle have been lasting for 2 weeks and not for a typical 1 hour battle.

I heard your s3xmodit entry "LOADING TIME" from the last Spring Tracks major. It sounds great. You can do it!

EDIT: remember that you can convert Minerscale's melody to minor and to a 4/4 beat so that it combines with your theme more smoothly. Or vice-versa.

Sorry, maybe my message wasn't clear. I was referring to the next couple rounds. I'm struggling with this one, like, a lot, but I think I can turn out something decent... Thank you for the extra time, though.

I generally don't like sample packs. I think they're very limiting in a negative way. It's easier to be pigeonholed into a style with samples, where chips don't typically have that problem because the sounds don't direct you towards a certain genre due to their simplicity. With chips, the work is in implying the sounds you're going for. With that subtext being given to you by the samples, you can't always make the style you're looking to make.

I get that it's about compromises but compromising in a sample-based format ruins the fun for me...

And on top of that, we have even LESS of a choice of the type of music we get to make because we've been given melodies to work with. I dunno, it just feels like one too many factors even with a sample pack of this size.

ok so. here are my two pants:

i usually like restrictions but sample restrictions like this are pretty hard for me as well. i struggled a lot in this round. i oft found myself saying "yo where are the celesta and pan flute" so i had to improvise and make changes. it was a tiring process for sure!

bitpacks r a different side imo, they usually have like themes where u can narrow down ur thoughts and actually make a song. great for people like me who get overwhelmed if there is a too wide range of options in composing.

in the tournament case, we already have the bitpack, and the entire event as a whole tends to be more unfamiliar to botbrs cuz botbs def not a covers website lol. imo mixists COULD have benefitted from a bigger samplepack to compensate for the narrow theme in the tournament, just to balance it out.

also its funny that everyone against 02fd is chipist. like why r u complaining abt the complaint, leave my bro alone lmao

This is a very good point. Thankyou for your pants. Allow me, if you will, to contribute my own.

I think that part of the appeal to both as a whole is in the joy of creative limitations, and an inherent part of a tournament like this is that there's an element of luck in the format and bitpack selections. You might end up having to fight from a position outside your comfort zone in terms of formal, technology or style. I know some folks on the chippist side had trouble with sgen due to unfamiliarity with FM.

To a certain extent, I think that rolling with the punches and doing your best anyway is good sportsmanship. HOWEVER, that's very easy for me to say. The chippist side has had a run of two very popular formats with very good approachability and flexibility, and both ones I'm personally familiar with, so it wouldn't be fair of me to judge from a position of advantage. I can also see that in many ways a bitpack can be far more limiting and opinionated than a chippist format choice, in most cases. Hell, given the use of sgen, *I've* had more freedom to choose samples than the people in the mixist side, so I can understand y'all feeling put out. In purely practical terms I wonder if a compromise like "use these samples plus (1, 2, 4) of your choice" might be more fair, or free reign on samples but only up to a certain file size.

I think at the end of the day it's worth remembering that this is the first attempt at this kind of compo on botb (to my knowledge). There's going to be wrinkles, issues nobody saw coming and so forth. It's still experimental. Best is to consider this an unstable beta test version and not to take it too seriously, we're all here for fun after all, and the stakes are basically zero.

I don't think being chipist or Mixist makes much of a difference here.
I personally dislike sgen a lot, and I wldve preferred nsfc over NSF+ by a lot. so in theory I cldve cried over the format selection and how much trouble FM gives me especially in this theme-based tournament. but this is a thing where I alone decided to join. it cld also be my choice to drop out again and noone wld hate me for that.
who's forcing me to participate except for myself? so I just take it as a special challenge, which turned out to be fun too, even if it was fully out of my comfort zone or what I wanted to do.

There's a real joy in trying to fight your way out of an underdog position, sometimes.

I feel like if we do this again, it might be interesting to have something on the Discord like a support channel for moments of 'help I don't know how to do $FORMAT" threads, or even entering as small teams or something so people can have some sort of support when they're hit with something way out of their comfort zone.

i can definitely sympathize with feeling out of one's element and dealing with a lot of frustration as a result. no shade there. tbh, not for format reasons but arrangement reasons, i've felt pretty out of my element in this thing myself! so, i'm sorry you were dealing with that. it is a difficult task we are faced with here, for sure, regardless of format.

the only thing i was disagreeing with was the sample packs being severely limiting or pigeonholing a style. especially with so many! it might take some chopping, slicing, looping, envelopes, filtering, to get some sounds where you want them, but imo you can make virtually whatever *with* whatever, and i have watched people achieve that with finesse for years both here and in Sample Pack Contest. to use an example within the s3xmodit format, coda's "espercompo" series from early this year always had lots of nice, rich rompler sounds in the pack, but i basically never made anything idiomatic "rompler cheese/funk/fusion/etc" with them, just made whatever i was feeling

granted if you're after some very specific sounds, like mioh's example of celesta and panflute, compromises will prolly have to be made, yes. (digging for a sine might help with the flute) but i feel like the argument of "you can only make A or B with this sample pack" starts to hold water only if your desire is to make C and C alone. otherwise the sky is the limit! there's a wealth of sounds to get creative with. i do also think it's easiest to let the sounds you like speak for you and inform what you want to make though, rather than force them through a specific pipeline - "what all can i do with these" rather than "how do i make C with these", or just earmarking all the sounds you like and making music with them. usually i just start rolling with the first couple sounds i run across that make me go "ooh cool sound" and build off that

anyway i hope that might help alleviate some sample pack frustration in the future... to some extent maybe it just takes time and experience to learn how to coax what you want out of a pack, too - and knowing what to keep an eye out for. for now, good luck everyone in this tourney round 🫡

Really sorry that Blue Christmas dropped out. An unfamiliar format can be too difficult to work with, after all. This is relatable and understandable. If I could go back in time with kleeder's idea, I'd have assigned both them and RadamLee either the nsf, nsf classic or the gameboy format, since these are the chipist formats not featured yet that they have in common.

Also sorry that 02FD and mirageofher struggled with the sample pack this round. This case comes across as more unexpected to me, however, since s3xmodit is a very popular mixist format and the sample pack had tons of samples. But I can understand it that not everyone should be expected to enjoy being experimental with a sample pack if that isn't their thing.

Similarly, not everyone should be expected to feel like challenging themselves with every format on the site. That is why some formats have always been more popular than others. I'm trying to be extra mindful about the format issue because people dropping out from a tournament have more consequences than if they drop out from a XHB or from a major, at least from a participation perspective. It'll inevitably affect the rest of the brackets and make other duelists either skip a round or win by default.

These battles are meant to be challenging, but fun at the same time. I think it's my responsibility to make sure challenge and fun are more or less balanced for everyone. Not sure if I can comply with everything and not everyone can have everything they want, but I'm always willing to make changes for the sake of making people as happy as possible. Already had to abandon the idea of disqualifying entries in which I couldn't identify the themes at all, so ultimately let other voters also decide how they personally feel. And also gave everyone two weeks this time so that there would be a higher probability that kleeder and mirageofher could participate.

birdrun is right when they say that since this kind of compo is new here, problems that nobody saw coming will ensue, no matter how prepared and experienced I was for this, because this adds BotBcore rules and BotBcore mindsets (that sometimes conflicts with my own) to the mix, which are very particular. Things can only be improved from making the event happen in the first place and from listening to the participants' opinions, which is something I've already been doing.

Despite the aforementioned issues, I'm happy that everyone is doing their best to make things happen. That's why I'm also trying my best to be a good host.

It's been fun and challenging, and it sounds like that was the goal, so from my perspective, mission already accomplished! also.. isnt the mixist format selection just fucking boring and lame? lmao. fakebit is basically allgear 2. allgear on its own was already a boring format choice since its just "the default audio format", which can also be seen as a joker "you have no format, have fun", compared to the chipists.
i am aware mixist formats are less diverse than chipists, but you still have cool shit like sunvox, klangfreude, lgpt, renoise, pxtone, jummbox, moai.... thats enough to fill 4 rounds of tournament but instead you go with allgear and fakebit? i dont get it.
especially because the chipist bracket has more variety this time. why even do formats for mixists then, if half the rounds are just "submit any mp3"

also a little sus that both rounds where you, tex, participate in, are the ones with the (basically) unlimiting formats- almost like youre assigning them to you on purpose because (judjing by your first round), having a full feature set and endless possibilities seems to be where youre most skilled at. why dont you try a round of klangfreude or moai against viraxor instead?

btw, I assume the standard botb format rules apply here therefore it's alright when I edit samples inside mpt, ya? (still didn't check the pack, but I'm asking in advance)

very curious for the final format too because I was, like viraxor, expecting it to be the fakebit/wildchip combo

You can edit the samples inside the tracker, yes. Personally, I'd say they were already optimized well enough for this specific format. But you may think differently.

Really minor thing, I wanted to be able to use a :xx command in one part (delayed note + cut) which I think only exists in that format. Can make do without too, it's a tiny part I wanted that for and I can make the same thing happen otherwise

In that case, this would mean kleeder would also be allowed to work with the .mptm format and send me their .mptm, too.

We need entries from birdrun and Jakerson. birdrun told me they're still in. I don't know about Jakerson yet, though.

Entry period extended to Tuesday, October 31, 11:59 PM EST. But that's it.

If anyone else wants to revise their entries during this time, I'm fine with that.

i think it's really cool that the matchups started differing in format, even if that's different than how you originally conceived it (i think?). it's probably a lot of extra work to sus out a good fit for each matchup, but it feels more personalized and also helps avoid things like ppl getting overwhelmed by <thing they've never/seldom done>

All done. Sent in my stuff! Since wildchip usually entails describing instrumentation, I'm including that here along with samples I used:
7 channels SNES
6 channels OPL3
Pulse/tri/noise/dpcm 2A03

Samples included various instruments from Secret of Evermore, Mario Party, and Mario Kart DS. Shared the pack with Tex.

Thanks everyone, hope you all had a good time!

Congratulations to kilowatt64, who won the Grand Classist Tournament by 1 vote!!

Congratulations to kleeder for winning the overall bronze!!

Congratulations to Dippy for winning the tinchip bracket, also by 1 vote!!

And congratulations to mirageofher for winning the tingear bracket!!

Thanks everyone who participated!! We got lots of amazing music in this tourney.

I hosted this 4HB last weekend to elect the overall top 3 trophies of GCT and the winner design was Blast Brothers's. kilowatt64 is free to attach the GCT gold trophy to their profile bio to showcase and immortalize their efforts if they so desire. The same applies to kleeder for her bronze equivalent. I uploaded them here
and here
, respectively, for convenicence.

Top 3 tinchip and top 3 tingear winners also get trophies of their own! I took sean's design from that 4HB, gave it Blast Brothers's treatment and added a few touches of my own (the tinchip one has a square wave as a crown and the tingear one has a few piano keys instead). I hope people think they look cool (there was no election for those, so, sweating intensifies)!!

Dippy earns the tinchip gold!

RadamLee earns the tinchip silver!

birdrun earns the tinchip bronze!

mirageofher earns the tingear gold!

Minerscale earns the tingear silver!

02FD earns the tingear bronze!

Will thanks the following people again, for emphasis:

Thanks to puke for giving me the greenlight to host this.

Thanks to all the duelists who made this event possible: kilowatt64, Dippy, damifortune, kleeder, Jakerson, RadamLee, Blue Christmas, birdrun, mirageofher, Dunehawk, 02FD, Minerscale and Viraxor.

Thanks to all the pixelists and grafxicists who allowed me to use their characters as bitpacks for the tourney: pouale, OminPigeonMaster, DimWiddy, mirageofher, Tomas_AP, pedipanol, Cryptovolans, Fluffy, mewokoral, Webriprob, loni, Captain Cheese, sean, MelonadeM, sparklecats2009, Julian, Frag, mk7 and tree.
