starting another one, sorry.
who put "only selfmade images etc" in the lyceum article?
some entries in the advent calendar used (copyright-free)-images from the web in their entries. should we have different rules for ohbs and majors?

is 1mb filesize limit enough/okay and why isnt it higher?

and i remember a section about "wysiwyg-editors arent allowed" before big lumby did the article rewrite.

i know a public thread isnt able to find a solution because everyone has a different opinion on this, but [good argument why we need this thread]

[offtopic question?] as i could create a webfont in less than 2 hours (without rush), perhaps would be great having typeface battles (vectorial like ttf/otf/type1/etc., or bitmap like png strips used on grafx2 and etc.) - of course that some typefaces can take our whole lifetime (as happened to Giambattista Bodoni! :D ), but some quite interesting experiences can be done in few hours, or even less!

and talking back about html, for me, 1mb limit was okay (my humble submission was around 1/5 of that limit! :D - i could put some glitchy/experimental gifs around, i forgot to do that)

about wysiwyg editors, i remember that "decades" ago editors like dreamweaver used to create a lot of garbage code we always needed to clean everything later (you know, proprietary tools sucks often, even from macromedia/adobe! :D ) - i think would be a goal having the final html files at least looking like created on text editors from scratch (as we can also learn some html from the code cleaning process)

@kleeder it is indeed!!! ;)

anyway, if anyone here is curious about, over 10 years ago i wrote and shared this simple and humble tutorial - https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=pt&tl=en&u=http://nitrofurano.altervista.org/typefaces/tutorial/ (wrote in portuguese, i was too lazy translating it to english, i hope that google translator doesn't mess it up too much! :D ) - i used fontforge and inkscape, but if anyone want to use alternatives like fontlab, fontographer, illustrator, freehand, etc., the whole process might be very similar (as it actually was with fontographer and freehand)

and there are even some those (quite interesting) free web tools around for creating typefaces - they might be not that "perfect", but they are quite interesting and worth trying as well

the section "All resources used in the entry must be the author's own work" was in the lyceum pretty much since day one (specifically since Jangler's 2014 edit). there is definitely an argument against this if you look at the photomash format, where using public domain images is acceptable. if this was changed, would major html entries have to link to used images and disclose their rights to use them? would it be limited to only images or any files used?

currently, even though public domain images are not allowed, people can still use image generators (such as textanim.com) since that's effectively using a tool to create an original image. maybe we should have a list of some in the lyceum for people to use.

I think 1mb is enough with my experience with html. that should be plenty enough to store a couple of reasonably sized html and css files and some low-res images. I think the 1mb filesize is to restrict creating overly modern web design where some pages can transfer multiple megabytes on page load. it may also encourage to focus on the html more as it's relatively small in size instead of doing something crazy with media files.

wysiwyg editors should be allowed imo. they're different tools to achieve the same outcome. I don't think there's another botb format where we restrict the use of a certain type of tool for an entry.

I'm ok with allowing wysiwyg editors now. Pretty sure I had like a dreamweaver ptsd issue thats subsided. Also I think open-source / public-domain images should be allowed too.

At this point, I'd like `html` to simply focus on old/obsolete web technology over http. Which is sad because some of it doesn't work anymore (or was dependent on early Internet Explorer features). Who remembers styling scroll bars? How about manipulating images in real time with directx? MIDI playback isn't even supported anymore...!

yea it's safe to say that html4 has really run its course, leaving this to be more like an nsfc format than anything else. on a side note, even if i've pretty much used them to live preview and nothing else beyond that, i didn't even know wysiwyg editors was disallowed in html. o .o

Lack of MIDI playback in HTML5 is one of the great tragedies of the modern age.
