Whilst BotB is on the verge of virtual economic collapse I thought I'd come up with a quick way to pull some boons back into the system. This is my first project done with my (finally put together) local development environment. Which means I could code and test before deployment on the live server! Holy shit! No noobs flipping out in the chats about FECES errors!!!

If the OHB host pays the 500 then no late penalties will be applied to final scores. BotBrs still get their latist points tho.

actually i think it might be better for entrants themselves to pay to make their entries not lose points, rather than the host paying for the whole compo (either a flat rate of 500 or w/e or maybe for each minute late it's a 200 boon deficit? idk)

it'd be a waste if everyone was on time....also this is botb so people shouldn't have to pay for other people's mistakes......

I second golgi's/jimmyoshi's idea. It's okay for botbrs to participate more in order to be able to make use of the benefit. If you want it easier, make more tunes and earn more boons, n00b.

The 500 is non refundable and must be paid during the beghasting period. At present, there is no visual indicator that it has been done either. :/

I'm open to these other ideas too. I think paying boons to remove your personal late penalties should be waaaay more.

imo have a small additional nonrefundable fee for the "privilege" of special formats (so liek an additional 50 b00ns each? maybe?) and then refund the 250 that would make up the normal hosting deposit

i think its good 2 make cool weird formats more accessible, encourages n00bs to try new things (and maybe get some experience to prepare for Big Battles with those formats !!)

6000 boons is definitely reasonable for submitting an hour late.......

if i'm gonna submit a song an hour late, that means my song is worth waiting a whole extra hour, it's worth that 6000 boons

most compos have ended 30 minutes prior to that.....

there should be a different means of hosting xhb's rather than this imo

I don't know about this one. This could quickly lead to one hour battles that aren't really one hour battles anymore. The whole "let's see what a bunch of different people can do under the same conditions!" idea could get lost.

Yes, there should be more ways to spend boons, but I don't know if this is one of them.

i'm in full support with savestate, but i'd drastically reduce the amount of b00ns required for just a minute to 12.5b.

the way this could work is, instead of ohb's being restricted to one hour, they have a configurable amount of time you can set (an 1h one would still be 750b, while a 2h would be 1500b).

i'm also fond of sincx's idea where botbrs pay up a sum of non-refundable b00ns to host a "special format", but i don't know how well would that work.

I've donated all my b00ns to BotB. Until then let's just take everybody's hidden alts and just dump all unused b00ns into it. I think the paying b00ns for no late points is silly.

b00ns can can go for the following things (without things really being added):

- if an ailment is given to you, you pay 750 b00ns. if you don't have that money, you're in negative and owe money to BotB as you make it.
- editing posts costs 50 b00ns.
- bumping costs 100 b00ns.
- tax: all BotBrs on the site pay 50 b00ns a month in tax. if they have 0, they are not taxed.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me, maybe except the post edit fee, it'd be pretty expensive for botbrs who tend to redact their posts alot

you could implement pooled boons to host a locked battle format, but i doubt many people will do it since they can usually just ask an admin or someone with the badge instead.

The idea to pay to remove favorites is brilliant. I'd really like to clean up my favorites some day.

The ability to somehow host ohbs without a badge sounds like a nice idea! At the moment there are almost only allgear and remix battles with some sexmods in between. The problem isn't that people don't want other battles, but that people don't have the badges, and as long as there are no battles, they can't earn the badges. It's an endless circle of doom.
It should be expensive to host ohbs without a badge, though. Trying to get the badges is a big part of the fun, in my opinion.

Also, regarding the more flexible battles: I'd certainly like such a feature, but the simplicity of ohbs is part of their awesomeness, in my opinion.

At the moment it usually goes like this:

Person A: Anyone wanna OHB? Allgear maybe?
Person B: Sure!
Person C: Yeah, that would be cool!
Shinichi: Big dongs!
Person A: Cool, let me quickly think of a theme and I'll get this going.

With a more flexible system, this simplicity could get lost, but it would certainly be worth trying.
Maybe the abilty to host something like 7 day battles would be a good compromise.

Just throwing stuff out there. I realize these things aren't exactly easily implemented and it would take a lot of time to do so.

Even though you can ask an admin to host a locked format, pooling boons would likely cause more thoughtful participation, since you're investing your botb income into it. Plus Admins aren't always available!

There have been many times I'd like to host a battle in some odd format that I barely have any badge progress toward...It would be great to be able to pay a (non-refundable) amount to host it. It could encourage more format diversity by allowing botbrs more opportunities to make badge progress in less-popular formats. As it is, we tend to have to wait for big majors to submit the more esoteric formats.

Also of course I'm in favor of paying extra to remove late penalties lol

I don't mind a tax at all, but it'd be nice if was an income ratio thing.
Ideas that I really love that have been stated here though:

• Big Boon cost to host battle in format without a badge (best idea!!)

• Big Boon cost to host a battle longer than one hour but not longer than a few days or something (I guess that requires making a whole new category between OHB and Major)

• Givin' the merchant somethin' to sell me.
Maybe that could be where a one time use hosting privilege for other formats or longer battles could live, with a tiered pricing system. I don't know if I'd rather see the weird stuff as expensive or the bigger, more competitive formats as expensive, but dang, if there was an MT-32 battle every so often that would be awesome.

I guess the merchant being part of the solution is contingent on whether or not he puts his Boons in the bank. He seems like he might be an off-the-grid type...

puke7: Keep the max lateness at 30 minutes, but maybe lower it for battles that have no late penalties. 15 minutes might be good...and after that either deny more entries or have anything after 15 minutes give you a late penalty regardless of whether or not b500 was spent.

e: Oh also! The late penalty would be relative to the extra 15 minutes instead of how it would be normally. So if you're 20 minutes late in this scenario you'd only get a 5 point penalty instead of 20 points.

I like b00daw's first idea because it seems right to assume that a ton of boons are collectively just sitting there in unused or abandoned accounts. why not confiscate boons to some degree when an account is inactive past a certain amount of time, say a year or something?

all these other ideas being discussed are interesting, but I think just clearing out abandoned accounts of their boons would be the most effective measure with the least amount of work involved.

i dont like the stealing boons from inactive accounts thing. but this is also slightly personal to me bcus i left my old account dormant for like 5 years before i made this acc and gave myself all my boons back. i even took a yr break on this acc. i wouldn't wanna lose one of my senses of progress just bcus i need time away. -- that idea is dangerous and could incentivize making lazy entries just to keep your account "active".

Instead of taking the boons of an inactive account all at once, maybe you could just take a small amount (like 10 boons) from each inactive account every day until they log in again.

Steal all the boons from dead accounts but also implement a system so those boons are refunded in case the account goes active again.

i oppose anything that costs boons proportional to your income or wealth. wealth ain't mean nothin' if you pay for things in percentages

just thought of this - another thing the site could charge boons for could be titlecore entries (that is, entries with titles longer than the character limit)

the costs could be slightly exponential per additional character, so really long titles will be impractical (or just keep a hard limit that is ~2x the current one, or something like that)

a botbr could be warned if they exceed the limit on submitting, something like "your current title will cost X boons to keep, otherwise it will be truncated to blah blah blah"

Imo 1, max. 2 years of inactivity should be enough to consider the account abandoned, and begin (slowly!) transfering boonz back to the bank from them. And in case the owner happens to relog again, the process of charging their boons would be stopped, and inactivity timer would be reset.
