hi! as far as I understand, covers are offlimits because of possible copyrights problems.

Would it be possible to consider the possible addition of a battle format where you need to cover public domain material (pre 1800 should be ok? maybe even pre 1900 is fine?)
It might be pretty fun :3

so this is more of a request to host a battle than it is a feature request. unless what - would you want a cover format?

It would be so cool to do one for Der Hölle Rache (from Die Zauberflote by Mozart). In terms of what time period, in the US at least all songs written before 1922 are in the public domain. Not exactly the recordings but the actual written sheet music and songs themselves. The copyrights vary per country, so dunno specifically for everyone.

Ah yes, we could have great fun covering Beethoven and the likes in our own styles if this battle format is added. :D

Dies Irae
was a great battle. For me, I think this worked because the root theme
was so simple. A simple theme means more exploration.

Pros for 'cover' format : easy organization
Cons for 'cover' format : essentially a dupe of allgear

Another thing to note is that US Copyright Law was amended back in 2012. Copyrights are now observed 70 years past the death of the author. Stravinksy is off limits until 2041
.

So, we could have major battles along this theme. I need specific suggestions I suppose. Like picking a specific era or something.

Kind of back to my Der Holle Rache comment, doing an opera cover OHC where everyone submits their own versions of songs from a particular opera in different formats would be cool. You could do like Bizet's "Carmen", Mozart's "Die Zauberflote", "Don Giovanni", "Marriage of Figaro", or even something like Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffman". You could go REALLY crazy and do a 4-part long Wagner Ring Cycle OHC. All 18th and 19th century operas are public domain as far as I know (again the musical content itself rather than particular orchestral recordings). It's just an idea :P

In this case, what about explicitly allowing covering in battle themes if what the theme asks to be covered is in public domain?

I don't think it needs to be a new format as long as it's a part of the battle disclaimer. :)
