I love the pokey chip and the way it makes songs sound, and oh my god, this is so well-done. Thank you for it, FearofDark, it does have a lovely arrangement, but I'll have to disagree with Slimeball on the pokey hate.

By the way, you should make a version of this with real instruments or something, I can imagine this song would sound really neat outside of a chip, excluding the arps which can be replaced with chords.

It's mainly the detuning on some notes! I wonder if you haeitrs think it actually sounds better with that detuning or didn't notice it. ;)

a little bit of detuning can be charming but this is more sour than is palatable to me

I enjoy detuning, and it's not a big issue in this song at all. Or maybe I just suck at hearing things correctly.

@Slimeball + Jangler: I understand your point. The detuning problem (sadly the bane of working with this chip) is especially apparent towards the start during the thinner sections of the song.

This entry was admittedly a rush-job and looking back on it, I'd fill in the emptiness a little more towards the beginning with lil' details and things in order to make things more interesting and hopefully mask the detuning a bit. That being said, I've always felt the Pokey's detuning adds a certain "creepiness" that could be effective (evidently not here though, haha). I appreciate your criticisms :)

I have a folder where I place the "perfect" Botb songs, it contains just six songs by now. This song went into that folder.

I don't see the detuning as a problem. I see it as charming. Love it.

There was some discussion earlier about tuning systems vs harmony, and the point was brought up that even in non 12-tet tuning systems you can still get similar harmonic pushes and pulls(it will just sound 'out of tune'). What's interesting to me is that our cultured ears are gonna pick up on the harmonic functions despite how 'in-tune' they are; the message within the music will still be there...just with a funny accent.

So does it really sound 'bad' or are the ears just being stubborn and conservative?

I don't mind the detuning at all! But I kinda like things that are a little 'out' sometimes. For instance, you can make a synth sound very stark by making it several cents sharper than the rest of the mix (I actually did that in my wildchip with the Minimoog).
