thanks a lot for the kind words everyone!
sloopy, my recording workflow is actually busted as hell, but i'm glad people like the results! i recorded all the liveplay parts one at a time on my zoom H2 in mono mode while sat on the sofa (using my partner's cross-stitching apparatus as a mic stand for the vocal takes), then transferred them from the SD card to my laptop and put it together in ableton.
the baritone guitar track was recorded first (to a metronome) since it's the backbone of the whole piece, then for the rest of the liveplay takes i was listening to that through one earbud. normally i record vocal and guitar simultaneously because that's how i write, but for the style i was going for in this entry i wanted a bit more control at the mixing stage so i recorded the vocals separately.
besides the baritone guitar and main vocals, there's liveplayed acoustic guitar (panned right) and the various harmonised vocals (the
bit at 2:32 is 4-part harmony with 7 voices as the top 3 parts are doubled L-R). the drums and piano are both from
pianobook, a source of free DRM-less sample packs i highly recommend, played with
decent sampler (just a free sampler). there's also a very soft mellotron bass. the mixing is all just light-touch EQ, compression, delay, & reverb with stock ableton plugins (i don't think this style would sound good over-produced). ableton session looks like this:
hope this is helpful!
p.s. your vocal entries, especially
this one, were massively inspirational for me getting more into singing/songwriting for BotB entries, something that i'd never even considered doing when i first signed up. you're one of my BotB heroes!
