since it's become more customary to post (for example) FTM sources for NSF compos, maybe it'd be worthwhile to have a "donload source"/"submit source" function on entry pages. it could be useful for any "compiled" format (NSF, TAP, etc.) as well as for remix/allgear battles where mp3s are submitted by default.

not really a high priority thing, since uploading to the bot and posting a comment with the link works just fine, but it's an idea :)

I've been doing it a lot lately.... It'd cut down on the "recent postings" spam, at least.

I'm into this idea, but things get hairy in the chiptune arena. For example, an .nsf file is usually referred to as the source file. I understand that the .ftm or mml.txt could be considered source files. But if so, what do you call the file between source and render?

Does that need a special name? I'd say it's just the main "file". The render is its own thing (unless the file is already an MP3), and the source is just whatever "source" file someone thinks they should attach, if needed.

I see what puke is saying... but it might work to just have one "source slot" for each song, and the user has the option to upload whatever relevant thing they prefer into that slot. for a wildchip that was done in NSF, for example, the user could submit either the NSF or the FTM/MML. if they really want to post both, then they can do it the old fashioned way. or hell, make the thing accept zips so they can just cram both files in. ;)

NSF = "entry" or "file"
FTM = "source"
MP3 = "render"

terminology = sorted out

now make this happen pls :)

Next question : Should the BotBr who submitted the entry be the only one who can submit sources? Or, maybe a better question, should BotB keep all versions of a source submitted even if it only shows the latest one (like BotBr avatars currently)? We also have 10mb limit on uploads from our lovely web serving host.

Having the entrant and admins be able to upload source files for an entry makes the most sense, it's extremely unlikely that other users would have the source file.

It might be a good idea to keep all uploaded versions of a source if there's no technical reason against it [eg, space concerns].

The 10 MB limit might be a problem when dealing with Renoise source files and the like, during remix compos, but eh. Maybe we could have an option to either host the source here or for the user to put a source link?

I think it'd be fine if there was even like a 1MB limit on sources. It doesn't seem appropriate to upload gargantuan unmixed audio sources.

And yeah, I agree only the original user or admins. Even if other users might have source, it's not up to them to share it on behalf of the author.

The reason I asked the question was I was wondering if admins should have any ability to upload sources. Also, I believe if the a file > 10mb was hosted on the internet then BotB could grab it. The 10mb limit is only applied to an http/php transfer. I can easily write a command line call to curl or wget. Renoise files can get pretty big (all the samples are saved in .flac) but I wouldn't mind seeing them (or old Buzz sources too).

BotB currently has virtually unlimited space and bandwidth. As in we're utilizing somewhere between 1/100th and 1/1000th of the resources allotted. We have plenty of room for growth.

The source .IT file for my Hurlicano entry is a whopping 37.1 MB, mainly due to the samples involved. If I were to post that, I'd probably do a post-loop cut (that's all the unused sample content I left behind), but other than that, I'll leave the file as-is. Everything else that I have for source files (if they were converted to a different format) is less than 10, the largest being I believe my 80s Scene entry for 5 MB.

I think admins should have the ability to do it, just in case there's a situation where the user wants to but cannot. I would not want an admin doing it without my consent, but admins are expected to have discretion, of course.

Source > emulated format > mp3 render

+1 author and admin only access
+1 pedagogist points

I'm really not sure how/if it should work for mp3. My source files are normally >100MB

well, puke could figure out a limit he thinks is reasonable for project file sizes... anything really big probably doesn't make sense to host on botb itself. but i bet something like 15 megs would accommodate 99% of entries' sources (with the lion's share being much smaller).
