HELLO. battle of the bits dot com

i have had many battle series ideas that i just cannot create due to lacking badges, so i would just like to dump some here so other people can use them... feel free to add some of your ideas too!

-
draw or
pixel

you are given a text description or photo of clothing, you then have to design a character based on that description/image (name of the battol could reference a game about fashion or something idk)

-
furnace or
deflemask
(if you hate yourself)
you get provided a couple of chips, but can only use 1 channel. have a rule against just having an audio stream on a sample channel (cant think of a funny name so maybe something like "mono mayhem!")

-
nexxt

you are given a .nss file with chr gfx from a 40kb nes game, this one is kinda boring because nexxt doesnt really have any battles to begin with (call this one "so retro" because it would be funny)

-
clipnote
(though this could also be done with other formats that allow animation)
you get a .clip file with one image, and you need to finish it. very simple concept because clipnote has had no xhbs (i genuinely cant think of a funny name for this one)

-
remix

make a ytpmv. all of the samples are ones that people would usually find in ytpmvs, also make one without the cover aspect of course!! (idk what the name of the series would be called, but have a subtitle for every battle like "ytpmv - snooping as usual" or something)

I've had this idea for a while, and I can host it, but I'm sharing it here to also gauge interest:

midi /
sc55 /
xg

You can only use patches from alternate banks. For the drum channel(s), you can use any kit that's not the standard one. Optionally, a theme or a list of sounds could be provided.
- For MSGS MIDI and the SC-55, this means only using GS mode-exclusive patches, as specified here. This is probably the more interesting variant, with roughly half the amount of instruments as General MIDI, including some pretty distinct ones, while introducing many more SFX.
- For the MU50/S-YXG50, this means only using XG mode-exclusive patches, as specified here. This still leaves over 300 instruments and a bunch of SFX to choose from, so this variant would probably benefit from additional restrictions.

This does require the ability to insert SysEx messages for activating GS or XG mode (which FL Studio still doesn't have), and some level of familiarity with these extra sounds, so it might be too complicated for a XHB series?

battle of the karts 56

-
PIXEL >
FAKEBIT

> inspired by aji's vombot raceway entry, this is a minor battle series based on a botb-styled mario kart series. i don't know if this will have parts or if it's going to be a one-time thing but this is how it goes

first, the battle starts off as a pixel battle, where the botbr must draw a course

after the winner of the pixel battle is shown, eventually a fakebit version of the battle will start, where we have to make a track for the winning course of the pixel ohb

a track for a track

i've also had an idea for battles where you design characters... i also really want to do a s3xmodit or remix series of samples completely randomly chosen from my collection

@9sphere sending SysEx in FL Studio is possible, but requires some python knowledge
(see also this
). I could probably make something work, but I have no idea when I'd get to doing it. If someone else thinks they'd like to take a crack at making a script that could activate the auxiliary banks then be my guest!

P.S. I'd be super down for that battle idea!! :D

@PlugNPlay There seems to be this thing which I found on the FL Studio forums, perhaps it's worth a try. https://github.com/LeifBloomquist/MIDIMapperX

I have no idea if this idea has been done to death before but I’ve always liked the idea of a pastiche competition like “make a sid in the style of Rob Hubbard” or something like that

@welpix style theft real

...speaking of
style theft: (ive hosted one before but you can hijack)
make tune in style of game/composer

format:...ok here's the issue
if the game was say a nes game, then the format for that battle's nsf. simple!...
next battle's an sgen game, now format's sgen
next battle's a sid composer, now format's SID
like your just getting random ass badges bro, who tf is gonna join.

maybe fakebit and allgear? (allgear for more modern styles, fakebit for more "so retro" ones)

idk take it man

This is an idea that's been in my head for SUCH a long time, I need someone to hear this.

Imagine: A Major battle
Format: Furnace (or anything else that allows multiple chips from different systems.)

Collaboration is required.

Two or more artists work on a song together, but they cannot work on the same soundchip at once.

i.e. if BotBr A chooses 2A03, and BotBr B chooses YM2612, They _can_ work together on the song-- but any contributions to the entry need to be in the specific chip they're assigned to.
That way, you could even tell who's making what and they'll all have their individual voices.

Imagine having one guy write the chords in N163, while another guy does the percussion with commodore 64, while a third guy's writing melodies with the game boy-- and they can swap all OVER the place too! The possibilities are endless..

I think it'd be kinda cool to have something like that!! Give people even more of an excuse to collaborate on here.

seasons/days for certain chips themed around that chip
like in nsf+ season or nsf+ day every battle must be nsf+ or there are nsf+themed activities
also so you can say "oh it's opl season"

Deathro's idea is neat. I think it could be implemented in a serial manner - in the first battle of the series you can only make a one-channel song. In every subsequent battle, you take an entry from the previous battles and add a single channel to it.

Re: original post, love the mono mayhem idea, I've been wanting to try something monophonic for a while but figured it'd get wrecked in any normal battle ...

I remember a track that showed up on the botb video feed that was only the triangle channel and it was awesome

EDIT: also love Deathro's idea. Someone do both of these please.

- Double Limitation -

You can prepare this dish with any chipist format of your choosing.

Step 1:
Lightly whip contestants by asking them to double down on a limitation of a specific chip format by assigning a limit within it.
For example, in nsf format, you'd say "No pulse channels!" or something similar, sgen, maybe restrict users to just three FM channel, amigamod, only allow samples that are less than 128 length, etc.

Step 2:
Cook at 560° for approximately 1 hour.

Step 3:
Profit (??)
or at least enjoy the entries which were submitted
