WOW !!!
i just released a new album, Distant Islands, over on iiiypad records, the 'staffcirc solo releases' label!
it's all experimental SNES chiptune music, with lots of microtonality, glitches, weird sampling, and manipulation of the chip's available parameters. all recorded straight from my Super Famicom!
here is the link to the album
the lovely album artwork is by our very own Tomas_AP:
and on Sunday at 3PM EDT, there will be a release party event hosted over on 7jam.io + simulcasted to my twitch page!
in addition to playing the full album, there will be an opening set featuring related NES and SNES chiptunes by friends, all of whom are botbrs:
albatross 路 amimifafa 路 blower5 路 Button Masher 路 doctorn0gloff 路 KungFuFurby 路 Promtastik 路 Razerek 路 sean 路 Sintel 路 station
here is the poster that just says basically everything i just said:

i wanted to write a bit more about the album here since, as some may notice, there are a few familiar tracks - namely my 4 entries from last year's Super Islands major. (and if you're keen, a couple others...)
when i wrote those last year, i knew i wanted to release them as a group somehow because i was very proud of them. over time i decided a full album would be the way to go - those tracks from the major were where i started learning about sampling other non-SNES sounds on the SPC700 chip, and shortly thereafter i started exploring deep automation control over stuff like the echo delay parameters, envelopes, and of course the pitch modulation (which is all over this album lol).
all the tinymod battles of the last year+ have also worked hand-in-hand with this experimentation because they have led me to study in-depth just how much one can fit in 64KB or less, and it's definitely more than you'd think. this is all to say that ultimately i became really fascinated with what kinds of crazy sounds you could achieve on the SNES, and i knew there was plenty of space to explore that within a full-length album! i'd like to think this album represents some new frontiers in super nintendo chiptune!
everything was written using osoumen's C700 VST plugin (or forks by Doc and blower) and rendered to SNES ROMs, then recorded on my Super Famicom. the only non-SPC700 audio in here is a live drumset performance by our very own jaxcheese on the 3rd track, which i had actually started exploring incorporating as a patched "MSU1 hack" ROM (a 'virtual expansion chip' supported by some emulators and flashcarts that allows for hq pcm audio) at KFF's recommendation... but we already had to get a special allowance from bandcamp to include the .smc source ROM files with the album, and getting even more filetypes would've been messy and difficult. i would still like to explore this in the future.
as you may know, i wrote a comprehensive guide to using C700 (or SNESMOD) to make SNES chiptune, so check that out too if it interests you!
lastly i want to give a big thanks to everyone here!! this is such a wonderful, positive and fertile creative ground, and i've been happy to share it with you all the last ~3 years. your support has kept me fueled. much love
