Just uploaded This entry, which was made in Flipnote Studio and edited slightly on my computer.

It got me wondering if Flipnote animations could be made into a format on BotB as GIFs (obviously with no sound).

The only problem is, this might go under the category of "paid" software since you need a DSi to use it. I think there have been discussions of emulating Flipnote Studio, but even now that's not very easy for the average user, if even possible.

Does anyone like this idea? Could it be made into a feasible thing? And other related questions?

https://calcium-chan.itch.io/clipnote this is a free alternative to it that i've heard eons ago

but ultimately i think this would just fall under pixel/visuall? then again there's the sound aspect of it isn't there? sorry i'm like totally unfamiliar with flipnote

i feel like visuall is the best format for it as it stands, unless there's some specific file type with it than can be viewed on it's own for free. on that, it seems like .clip files from clipnote studio would do just fine, so maybe? most pixel art software can replicate its functions pretty easily, not to mention tools like pencil2d, so if anything having these specifications would have a ton of counterfeiters trying their hand at passing off the most accurate fake flipnote. at least, that's how i see it with the .gif file type requirement.

that said it would be one hell of a novelty

"that said it would be one hell of a novelty"

THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYIN'!

Actually, Flipnote has .ppm files, which can be viewed for free using this
online player. I remember using a desktop one as a kid, too. So that would mitigate the "counterfeiting" thing.

I'm open to using Clipnote Studio, but I feel like it doesn't have the same "experience" as OG Flipnote. It seems like a beefed-up Flipnote 3D but for the PC. And not 3D.

Of course, it doesn't have the problem of needing specific hardware to make them.

EDIT: OKAY SO APPARENTLY DSi AND 3DS FLIPNOTES CAN BE CONVERTED TO .CLIP?!

huh! in that case, yea, .ppm and .clip would be great filetypes for this prospect format! just wondering which one would be better for botb...i suppose .clip since you can apparently convert dsi/3ds flips into .clip's & clipnote, the most popular modern iteration of flipnote, is the progenitor of the format.

i think it'd be up to the botbr on what limitations should be set on the format, but regardless this would be a wonderful format to have on botb. the only thing i'm worried about now is that it'll be like teletext where nobody even touches the thing, but considering it's flipnote it's not a significant worry.

i think as long as there is a unifying, free version of the program its limitations and quirks justify format consideration, especially given its place as a niche element of gaming tech (which many of our formats are). I know a lot of people who got their art started with it and, responding to lumby's teletext comment, I think more people have used flipnote than teletext (at least in the millennial and gen z demos, which seem to comprise most current active members here)

when asking for formats. i think we should focus only on file formats from floss and legally-non-paid software (and being cross-platform is a very relevant plus!), so everyone can participate on editing and submitting as easily as possible - i think that we all need to have this in mind...

Which would bring us to clipnote only. I'm not super against that, but again, it's just not the same.

As someone who has loads of nostalgia for flipnotes, I'd love to see it happen.
